In Crackdown on Dissent, Turkey Detains Press, Raids Outlet

Two journalists were detained and one newsroom raided this week as Turkish authorities continued a broad crackdown on dissent, according to news reports. The Committee to Protect Journalists calls on the government to halt its obstruction of journalists seeking to cover the protests that have swept the nation. "Turkish authorities are at a crossroads. They can follow a path of growing authoritarianism or they can choose instead to tolerate public dissent and critical press coverage," CPJ Europe and Central Asia Program Coordinator Nina Ognianova said from New York. "It is not too late for the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to do the right thing."

Wearing a Mask at a Riot or Unlawful Assembly is Now a Crime in Canada

A bill that bans the wearing of masks during a riot or unlawful assembly and carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence with a conviction of the offence became law today. Bill C-309, a private member's bill introduced by Conservative MP Blake Richards in 2011, passed third reading in the Senate on May 23 and was proclaimed law during a royal assent ceremony in the Senate this afternoon. The bill is meant to give police an added tool to prevent lawful protests from becoming violent riots, and that it will help police identify people who engage in vandalism or other illegal acts. The bill is something that police, municipal authorities and businesses hit hard by riots in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and other cities in recent years, were asking for.

Afghan Peace Volunteers Call on Whistleblowers to End War

We human beings are capable of living together without war. Billions of human beings all over the world live daily without killing one another, even when dealing with the most troubled or difficult of family members. We are capable of an impossible love. We can establish global norms of resolving all our problems through understanding and dialogue, and exclude war from the negotiation table. To do so, we should exclude from the UN charter the use of war as a last resort. We should disband the UN ‘Security’ Council. Of course, accomplishing these actions hinges on us, on climate change citizens, Arab Spring citizens, Occupy citizens and the ‘awakening’ citizens of every country to free ourselves from the unequal dominance of corporate governments with their laws and weapons of self-interest.

Brazil’s President Proud of Protesters, Listening and Sympathetic

Dilma Rousseff was leftist guerrilla in her youth who was jailed for conspiring against Brazil's military dictatorship, Rousseff said the sight of so many young Brazilians marching for their rights moved her. She also said her government sympathizes with the many grievances expressed at the demonstrations, from calls for more spending on education and healthcare to better and more affordable public transportation. "My government hears the voices clamoring for change, my government is committed to social transformation," Rousseff said. "Those who took to the streets yesterday sent a clear message to all of society, above all to political leaders at all levels of government."

When Will The Police Learn? Pepper Spray Builds Protests

Pepper spray has replaced the attack dogs of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, as people challenge corrupt government that is working on behalf of the wealthy and not the people; an unfair economy the sends wealth to the top while most people struggle to get by, the image of government abuse of citizens has become pepper spray. The use of the spray has produced consistent results -- iconic photographs and videos that lead sympathy for protesters, criticism of police and a bigger movement. In every incident, it has been nonviolent protesters -- and their nonviolence is critical to the growth of the movement -- attacked by police without justification.

New Yorkers Protest Corrupt Senate in Albany

Demonstrators say Klein should use his position to advance those bills to a floor vote.

Sao Paulo Protests Rage In Brazil’s Largest City

Tens of thousands of Brazilians again flooded the streets of the country's biggest city to raise a collective cry against a longstanding lament – people are weighed down by high taxes and high prices but get low-quality public services and a system of government infected with corruption. "What I hope comes from these protests is that the governing class comes to understand that we're the ones in charge, not them, and the politicians must learn to respect us," said Yasmine Gomes, a 22-year-old squeezed into the plaza in central Sao Paulo. Mass protests have been mushrooming across Brazil since demonstrations called last week by a group angry over the high cost of a woeful public transport system and a recent 10-cent hike in bus and subway fares in Sao Paulo, Rio and elsewhere. The local governments in at least four cities have now agreed to reverse those hikes, and city and federal politicians have shown signs that the Sao Paulo fare could also be rolled back.

Turkish Unions Strike Again, Bolstering Call for Government to Resign

At the end of last week there was talk of compromise as the Turkish prime minister offered to halt construction of a shopping mall in Gezi Park to placate demonstrators. But that’s too little, too late, labor groups said: However, this is not sufficient for people. If government had stated this 20 days ago, this might be a solution. However, in this 20 days, 5 people died, almost 7,000 people were injured. 15 people lost their eyes. There are 50 heavily injured people. Thousands of people were taken under custody. In all cities millions poured to the streets demanding resignation of the government. The number of people joined this mobilization is estimated to be as almost 10 million by press but this may be higher.

Today in Turkey, doctors walked off the job to protest the police violence against protesters and the arrest of doctors in Istanbul. Turkish doctors are wearing black, and they are not found in hospitals or clinics (except a few who remain in emergency rooms). They are striking to show their solidarity with fellow doctors who were arrested in Istanbul on Saturday, June 15 after police drove protesters from Gezi Park, using water canons and pepper spray. "The doctors were only trying to help the protesters by giving them emergency medical aid in the clinic set up inside the Divan Hotel," one witness told me. "The police marched right into the five-star hotel and arrested these doctors dressed in white lab coats. They were led off with their hand behind them, handcuffed."

Hundreds have rallied in front of the US embassy in the Yemeni capital of Saana against American operations at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp amid an ongoing hunger strike and the Obama administration's failed promises to close the facility.
