Extinction Rebellion: Big Tent For The Big One

Thousands of climate protesters picketed government departments and filled the streets of Westminster on the first day of the Big One, a mass demonstration by 200 different groups headed by Extinction Rebellion (XR). The goal was to build a wide coalition, including bigger groups such as Avaaz, Friends of the Earth and Keep Britain Tidy, plus local and community groups, in order to bring people to a climate crisis protest who may have been less comfortable with the acts of direct action and civil disobedience that attracted public anger. The demo followed an announcement by XR in the new year that they were stepping back from disruptive action.

Answering “What Should I Do?” Is Easier When You Know The Roles Of Social Movements

The United States is going in the wrong direction on a wide range of social, economic and foreign policy issues and people are justifiably upset and angry about this. One question we are regularly asked is: "What should I do?" In our last two newsletters, we examined the stages of successful social movements to show how movements can progress toward victories. This week, we attempt to answer the question by describing the fifth class of the Popular Resistance School,  "The Roles of Individuals and Movements" and how to be effective at them.

Newsletter: Billionaires Fear Revolt As People Power Grows

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers. Last week there was a populist revolt from across the political spectrum. Congress received tens of thousands of phone calls every day from people who are clear which side they are on: they want people and planet before profits; they want an open, transparent democracy not a secretive oligarchy. The campaign to stop Fast Track for corporate trade agreements like the TPP is a clarifying moment. It is democracy vs. oligarchs making decisions for us. It is transparency vs. secret law. It is the people vs. big business. It is a mobilized people vs. big money. These are the issues that unite people into a movement of movements. These are conflicts that let us know who is on the side of the people.

Exciting New Tool From The Yes Lab: Action Switchboard

The Yes Lab has put together a tremendous new tool to help activists develop campaigns, share the information and get help to carry out the project. They call it "Action Switchboard" and it allows you to post the action to a website -- they call the actions "Schemes." It allows people to see what you want to accomplish and get the kind of help you need, whether it is skills, supplies or financial support. They say it is "Kind of like Kickstarter, but for creative direct actions!" But, it is actually more than a Kickstarter because it is not just about raising money and getting other support. Once a Scheme is set up then inside your Scheme page, you can communicate with the rest of your team privately. People can also sign up to follow your Scheme so you can make public announcements that will be sent to everyone who signed up about your progress. And, if you want to "coordinate a large group to do a bunch of ongoing Schemes together around a particular goal or issue area [they] have special Outreach pages you can use to spread the word and raise money for your effort. Then, you can host large-scale conference calls where you work with your team to develop ongoing, sustained actions around your Goals. You can also run your own newsletter for your group."
