Peace Pagoda Monks To Walk Path Of Pipeline

By Richie Davis for The Recorder - At first blush, it might seem like environmental issues, and environmental controversies like the proposed Tennessee Gas Pipeline project through western Massachusetts, have nothing to do with the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. But King was a champion of environmental justice, the principle that all people are entitled to a clean and healthy environment, free of the effects of materialism and corporate greed. So the Leverett Peace Pagoda plans to lead a three day, 34-mile Martin Luther King Walk in opposition of the TGP’s proposed Northeast Energy Direct project, beginning Jan. 16 from the Northfield compressor station site.

Those involved assert that the operation of line 9 is a violation of indigenous sovereignty and treaty rights.

Pipeline Ruckus: Turning Public Hearing To Taped Comment

By William Petroski, for The Des Moines ReA ruckus developed Wednesday night when opponents of the proposed Bakken oil pipeline angrily accused Iowa Department of Natural Resources officials of trying to prevent them from publicly voicing objections at a meeting attended by about 150 people in Des Moines. Many people stood in the audience and loudly complained, with some criticizing Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa DNR Director Chuck Gipp while describing the proceedings as a sham. Gipp strongly rejected the allegations, saying the DNR was trying to be fair to all sides and follow Iowa law.

Canada’s Indigenous Bands Rise Up Against A Tar Sands Pipeline

By Jim Robbins for Yale Environment 360 - Sitting in his office on the outskirts of Montreal, Serge Otis Simon, council chief of the Kanesatake — a band of Mohawks — is clear about what might happen if the proposed Energy East Pipeline is routed through the band's land, in spite of their opposition. "The Warrior Society are men whose duty is given by creation to protect the land, people, and community," he told me, describing a group of Mohawks who go by that name. "I can't think of a more honorable way to be killed than standing in the way of that pipeline." Does The US Government Actually Regulate Pipelines?

By Dahr Jamail for Truthout - While global leaders meet in Paris at the COP21 climate talks in an effort to rein in global greenhouse gas emissions, the fossil fuel industry continues with business as usual. In far west Texas, that means a proposal for a controversial high-pressure natural gas transmission pipeline in a state that already boasts 431,997 miles of pipelines - enough to stretch to the moon and most of the way back to earth. The additional 143-mile-long, 42-inch-diameter Trans-Pecos pipeline will be built right through the heart of Texas' starkly beautiful and remote Chihuahuan Desert, asTruthout previously reported. The aim of the pipeline is purportedly to deliver natural gas from Texas to Mexico, where it is, in theory, in high demand.
