Clinton, Petraeus, Snowden And Manning: Tale Of Two Americas

By Dr. Marsha Coleman Adebayo for Black Agenda Report - The U.S. government does not hesitate to imprison those who leak its secrets – unless they are Hillary Clinton or some other Big Shot. “What is remarkable about American democracy is the consistent and perpetual benevolence of the ruling class towards its loyal disciples.” The privilege extends to killer cops, crooked investment bankers, and other slime. But “federal employees complaining of racism are eviscerated while their managers receive promotions.”

A Vision For A Post Citizens United Future

Zephyr Teachout for MayDay.US - Six years ago today, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Citizens United vs. FEC. It is not a happy anniversary. I remember waiting for the ruling and opening it up on my computer: when I finally read it, I didn't want to believe that the Court had gone as far as it had and been so careless with our democracy. Citizens United was bad history, bad logic, bad law. It was a major overreach on the part of the Court (the issue hadn't even been raised initially). In his majority decision that day, Justice Kennedy allowed billionaires and big corporations to spend limitless amounts of money to influence politicians.

Facts Over Fiction, Presidential Obsession & Less Meat

By Eleanor Goldfield for Occupy - We are OBSESSED with the presidential elections - and by we, I mean corporatized media ergo the American people by a very sick osmosis. There's more to 2016 (and indeed to 2015) than who ends up in the White House. Much more. Meanwhile, let's do some fact checking and lie wrecking post-state of the union and mid-presidential primary madness. Plus a few suggestions on what you can do to break away from this red white and blue rat race. Finally, Mark Pershin wants you to eat LESS meat, in the interest of saving the planet. But first, deeds not words.

The Tug-Of-War Between Negative & Positive Populism

By Bill Moyer Campaign - Disdain for the status quo in the US is nearly universal - AND - given the complexity and chaos of our times, change is inevitable. But who will define what "change" looks like? This dissatisfaction and inevitability represent our greatest opportunity and greatest challenge of our time. We must dislodge this Deep State and channel the energy of inevitable change toward a just and sustainable society. But our opponents are consolidating their power through treaties such as the TPP, institutionalizing their rule with the Deep State Mike Lofgren describes, and feeding a violent faux-populist arm of racists thugs to draw energy away from a populism that could actually deliver a future worth living for.

Spain’s Podemos Leader Rules Out Coalition With Any Party

By Agence France-Presse for The Guardian - The head of Spain’s leftwing Podemos party, a potential kingmaker following an inconclusive general election, has ruled out offering support to any party in forming a new government. Pablo Iglesias, whose party won a surprisingly high 69 seats in the general election on 20 December, refused to talk of forming alliances after meeting with acting prime minister Mariano Rajoy. Instead he said the priority for Podemos when parliament reconvenes on 13 January will be to help the poor by proposing a “social emergency” law that prevents families from being evicted for not paying their mortgage and ensures pensioners can buy their medicine.

A New Political Situation In Latin America: What Lies Ahead?

By Richard Fidler for Life On Left - Two recent events — the second-round victory on November 22 of right-wing candidate Mauricio Macri in Argentina’s presidential election, and the December 6 victory of the right-wing Democratic Unity Roundtable,[1]winning two thirds of the seats in Venezuela’s National Assembly elections — have radically altered the political map in South America. In the following interview, Argentine Marxist Claudio Katz discusses what these setbacks for the left mean for the progressive “process of change” that has unfolded on the continent over the last 10-15 years. My translation from the Spanish.

10 Good Things About The Not-So-Great Year 2015

By Medea Benjamin for Code Pink - It would certainly be easy to do a piece about 10 horrible events from 2015, from the ongoing war in Syria and the refugee crisis, to the bombings in Beirut, Paris and San Bernardino, to the rise of Donald Trump and Islamophobia. But that wouldn’t be a very inspiring way to bid farewell to this year and usher in a new one. So let’s look at 10 reasons to feel better about 2015. Iran nuclear deal: Despite significant political opposition and millions of dollars spent to try to quash the deal, the nuclear agreement with Iran was passed and the possibility of another US military entanglement was narrowly avoided.

Ten Proposals For Chavismo In The Face Of Our Defeat

By Luis Britto Garcia for Venezuela Analysis - There was no popular defeat harder than the 27th of February, 1989*. Rebelling against the economic measures levied by the International Monetary Fund, thousands were murdered in the streets, while neither the left nor any patriotic officials were able to coordinate efforts to defend them. Almost as serious as the above was the defeat of February 4th, 1992*. Neither the masses nor the left wing managed to organize manifestations in their support; dozens of patriotic military officials lost their lives or careers; the triumph of the right seemed definitive.

Venezuela: A Revolution That Will Not Die

By Eric Draitser for Counter Punch - This is not a revolution that can be undone with one election, nor can it be simply legislated out of existence. Much has been written about the outcome of Venezuela’s Dec. 6 legislative elections, with many of the analyses justifiably focusing on the shortcomings of the Socialist Party (PSUV) and the difficulty of the current state of affairs in the country. Indeed, even before the political body was cold, post-mortem examinations abounded in the corporate and alternative media, with dissections of seemingly every aspect of the Bolivarian Republic’s political, economic, and social life.

Undoing The Politics Of Powerlessness

By Yotam Marom for Medium - What a fucking whirlwind it’s been. Two months ago I had just moved into my parents’ basement, feeling deflated after the end of Bloombergville (a two-week street occupation outside city hall to try to stop the massive budget cuts of that same year), convinced this country wasn’t ready for movement. Now I’m in this living room with some of the most impressive people I’ve ever met, at the shaky helm of a movement that has become part of the mainstream’s daily consciousness. It’s my first time feeling like the Left is more than a scrawny sideshow, and it’s surreal. Truth is, I wasn’t much of a believer until I was caught up in the mass arrests on September 24th, until Troy Davis was murdered by the State of Georgia...

Dean Skelos And Son Found Guilty On All Counts In Corruption Trial

By William K. Rashbaum and Susanne Craig for New York Times - Dean G. Skelos, the former majority leader of the New York Senate, and his son were found guilty of federal corruption charges on Friday, a quick and devastating follow-up punch to the State Capitol, which has seen two entrenched leaders convicted and removed from office in less than two weeks. The jury in Federal District Court in Manhattan took roughly eight hours over two days to reach its verdict against Senator Skelos, 67, and his son, Adam B. Skelos, 33, finding them guilty of all eight bribery, extortion and conspiracy counts.

Why Allen Dulles Killed The Kennedys

By David Swanson of Let's Try Democracy - By now there's not nearly as much disagreement regarding what happened to John and Robert Kennedy as major communications corporations would have you believe. While every researcher and author highlights different details, there isn't any serious disagreement among, say, Jim Douglass' JFK and the Unspeakable, Howard Hunt's deathbed confession, and David Talbot's new The Devil's Chessboard. Jon Schwarz says The Devil's Chessboard confirms that "your darkest suspicions about how the world operates are likely an underestimate.

History Repeats: Soviets Defended Syria Against West In 1957

By Nikolai Gorshkov for Sputnik International - Top secret Cabinet papers dating back to September 1957 reveal that the British government was quite uneasy of the possible consequences of the US policy of "regime change" in Syria. Moscow's reaction to the American policy on Syria, the British ministers observed, "could be expected to be strong and determined, and they [Moscow] would try to frustrate it by every means short of those which, in their judgement, would be likely to involve them in a war with the West." Indeed, the Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev protested the overthrow of the Syrian government by the West in the strongest possible way, and even hinted at a possible military action to defend Damascus.

The Primary Route: How 99% Take On Military Industrial Complex

By Peter Olney for Stansbury Forumm - Democratic socialist, longtime political activist and past Massachusetts state legislator, Tom Gallagher has written a stunningly clear and concise book about American politics. It is self-published and he calls it a “pamphlet” in the tradition of George Orwell, “It is written because there is something that one wants to say now, and because one believes that there is no other way of getting a hearing”(1). Tom Paine wrote a pamphlet called “Common Sense” that inspired the American Revolution. Let’s hope that Gallagher’s common sense manifesto will inspire some clear thinking on the American left.

Venezuela Tells US Southern Command, Stay Out Of Its Affairs

By Lucas Koerner for Venezuela Analysis - Caracas, October 28, 2015 (venezuelanalysis.com) – Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro firmly rejected recent statements by US Southern Command Chief John Kelly on Tuesday, which he dismissed as unacceptable interference in the South American nation’s internal affairs. Speaking on CNN Español, the head of US military operations in Central and South America and the Caribbean described Venezuela as on the brink of “implosion” due to “inflation” and “drug trafficking” and expressed willingness to provide assistance in the event of a “humanitarian crisis”.
