Jeremy Corbyn Announces Plan To Rebuild & Transform The UK

By Jeremy Corbyn for Mirror - Our country has been let down for too long. The Tories have let people down and sold us down the river for too long. The Tory mantra of selling off every public asset - from railways to energy companies, from the water boards to the Royal Mail is back. Right now they’re trying to sell off the Land Registry a profitable public resource. They are literally trying to sell the land from under our feet.

From Brexit To The Future

By Staff of Project Syndicate - NEW YORK – Digesting the full implications of the United Kingdom’s “Brexit” referendum will take Britain, Europe, and the world a long time. The most profound consequences will, of course, depend on the European Union’s response to the UK’s withdrawal. Most people initially assumed that the EU would not “cut off its nose to spite its face”: after all, an amicable divorce seems to be in everyone’s interest. But the divorce – as many do – could become messy.

Brexit Confirms: The Center Cannot Hold

By Staff of Tele Sur - Britain is in a general state of pandemonium. The U.K. finds itself in the midst of a full-blown constitutional crisis, Prime Minister David Cameron has resigned, and both the country's governing party and the opposition are in the throngs of a fierce internal power struggle. As the cheerleaders of the leave campaign dither with no clear plan on how to move forward, the financial consequences continue to ripple through the City

Freedom Rider: The Good News Of Brexit

By Margaret Kimberley for Black Agenda Report - In calling for the vote on BREXIT, the British guardians of the financial powers-that-be have shot themselves in all four feet. Trillions have been lost in money markets, “the Trans Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is on hold for now, and NATO provocations against Russia will take a back seat.” The U.S. is losing its Trojan Horse in Europe. “Let the sun finally set on the British Empire.”

#KeepCorbyn: Labour Civil War Reaches Fever Pitch

By Staff of Socialist Appeal - All talk now of “unity” between these two camps is now a laughable joke. The only “unity” that these right-wing MPs are willing to accept is for Corbyn’s head to be paraded around on a stick. They have demonstrated that they have an utter contempt towards rank-and-file Labour members and for the basic principles of Labour Party democracy. They believe that the Labour Party is their personal property, and that the membership is merely a passive mob that must accept their condescending diktats. They would clearly rather split the party than see it dominated by Corbyn and those who support him.

Blairites vs. Jeremy Corbyn: The Battle Heats Up

By Nadia Prupis for Common Dreams - In the aftermath of last week’s referendum, our country faces major challenges. Risks to the economy and living standards are growing. The public is divided. The government is in disarray. Ministers have made it clear they have no exit plan, but are determined to make working people pay with a new round of cuts and tax rises. Labour has the responsibility to give a lead where the government will not. We need to bring people together, hold the government to account, oppose austerity and set out a path to exit that will protect jobs and incomes.

2008 All Over Again: Great Britain’s Decision To Leave European Union

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - Great Britain’s decision to leave the European Union has wiped out many bankers and global speculators. They will turn, as they did in 2008, to governments to rescue them from default. Most governments, including ours, will probably comply. Will the American public passively permit another massive bailout of the banks? Will it accept more punishing programs of austerity to pay for this bailout?

Brexit Vote Sends Shockwaves Across European Establishment

By Alan Woods for In Defense of Marxism - The referendum result was a crushing vote of no confidence in the Establishment. It caused shock waves in the markets which last night were confident of the victory of a vote to remain. The Leave side won by a margin of 52 % to 48%: more than 1.2 million votes more than Remain, with the English shires and Wales voting strongly in favour of Brexit. But Scotland voted massively against. Voter turnout was very high: in Scotland 67%, in Wales 72% and in England 73%.

After Brexit, European Left Calls For ‘Massive Political Opposition’

By Nadia Prupis for Common Dreams - In the tumultuous aftermath of the UK's vote to leave the EU, the European left is responding with a mix of reason, measured reassurances, and righteous defiance. Left Unity, a populist UK political party, released a statement early Friday morning that criticized the right-wing organizers of the Leave campaign and vowed to "step up the fight against neo-liberalism here—opposing all cuts, defending the NHS [National Health Service], fighting for decent housing—and across Europe."

Left Unity View Of Brexit

By Kate Hudson for Transform! - This referendum came from pressure from the far right – driven by anti-immigration sentiment, fuelled by racism. As the campaign has developed so has that racism increased, insufficiently challenged and often fed, by the mainstream. The result is an open emergence of the extremist right. As I write, news is coming in of the terrible killing of the Remain-supporting MP Jo Cox, with reports suggesting that her attacker shouted ‘Britain First’ – echoing the name of a far-right political party – as he fired into her face.

90 Years Since British General Strike: The Lessons For Today

By James Kilby for In Defense of Marxism - However, despite the strike growing stronger and stronger, the TUC leadership did everything they could to bring the strike to an end, resulting in a crushing defeat. The Communist Party failed to play the revolutionary role required by it, and sowed confusion amongst the advanced workers. The betrayal of the TUC “Lefts” came like a bolt from the blue, and set the movement back for years. As the crisis of capitalism deepens, we will see the return of general strikes across the world.

Activists Will Argue Obstructed London Arms Fair ‘To Prevent Crimes’

By Damien Gayle for The Guardian - Peace campaigners who have appeared in court charged with obstructing access to a London arms fair will argue that their actions were necessary to prevent crimes being committed using the weapons on sale. Five men and three women appeared before Stratford magistrates court accused of obstructing the highway outside the Defence and Security Equipment International (DSEI) exhibition in east London last September. Their protests stalled lorries and military vehicles attempting to gain access to the biennial event, one of the world’s biggest arms fairs, in the ExCeL centre in London’s Docklands.

UK Junior Doctors Speak Out During Latest Strike

By Staff of WSWS - This week, junior doctors in England held their fourth strike, walking out Wednesday for 48 hours. They are opposing the imposition of a new inferior contract by Conservative health secretary Jeremy Hunt. The new contract, due to come into effect August 1, will mean a reduction in pay for out-of-hours work and erode safeguards against working long hours. The strike led to the cancellation of around 5,000 operations. Socialist Equality Party members spoke to junior doctors on picket lines around the country.

Panama Papers Lead To Protests For David Cameron Resignation

By Kathryn Snowdon and George Bowden for The Huffington Post - “I wasn’t really sure what to expect, so far it all seems very jolly and everyone is really together in saying we think it’s rubbish what the government are up to. “It seems strange that if [David Cameron] knows and has knowledge of tax avoidance situations then he should get right on to it to benefit everybody and to benefit society. “He’s turning the country into a ‘moneytocracy’ - if you have the money you can do what you like.

Inside The UK’s Women’s Equality Party

By Catherine Anderson for Aljazeera - London, United Kingdom - If women had access to the same employment opportunities and salaries as men, London's economy would gain approximately $55bn, according to the Women's Equality Party (WE). On the morning of February 18, party leader Sophie Walker stood before Her Majesty's Treasury, the finance ministry, with a cheque for this amount, representing the money lost due to "women's untapped earning potential". Walker is on the campaign trail, standing as the WE candidate in the 2016 London Mayoral election.
