Coal Protest In The Northwest

Residents from across the Northwest converged on the Seattle offices of the Army Corps of Engineers to demand stronger federal environmental oversight of proposed export facilities for coal, oil and gas, transforming the Pacific Northwest and Salish Sea into a fossil fuel corridor to Asia. Residents are upset that despite tens of thousands of public comments requesting a comprehensive environmental review of these projects the Corps testified in June that public concern over impacts from burning fossil fuels overseas or increased rail and shipping traffic were "outside the Corps' control and responsibility."

14 Year Old Takes On TV Host Over GMO’s And Wins

Rachel Parent is a 14 year old who believes that GMO's should be labeled and picked a fight with a TV host, Kevin O'Leary at a rally. Then, she went on his show and debated him. As you will see she was well prepared, well informed and ready for O'Leary's comments; and was able to quickly respond with well informed responses. She wins the battle over labeling, and then moves to respond to claims that she is shill for environmentalists who is anti-science, she clarifies that she is neither and is not opposed to science, but it needs to be ethical.

Five Anti-Drone Activists Found Guilty of Trespassing

Five peace and anti-drone activists were found guilty late Monday in U.S. District Court in Sacramento of trespassing on federal property. The so-called "Beale 5" were arrested October 30, 2012 at the main gate to Beale Air Force Base, near Marysville, CA, where they had stood peacefully blocking the entrance. Beale AFB is home to the Global Hawk, a surveillance drone that provides reconnaissance for the weaponized predator drone, used in the majority of CIA drone strikes in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia. The guilty verdict, handed down by federal judge Carolyn K. Delaney, means a possible fine and/or up to six months in federal prison. Sentencing is set for September 9.

Bradley Manning, The Nuremberg Charter And Refusing To Collaborate

Sixty-eight years ago on August 8 was the signing of the Nuremberg Charter, which established the crime of wars against humanity and the whole concept of war crimes. It was signed by all the major Western countries and the Soviet Union. It was signed by the United States. And let me read you a couple of clauses from that charter. Principle IV of the Nuremberg Charter: "The fact that a person acted pursuant to order of his Government or of a superior does not relieve him from responsibility under international law, provided a moral choice was in fact possible to him." Or Principle VII: "Complicity in the commission of a crime against peace, a war crime, or a crime against humanity as set forth in Principles VI is a crime under international law."

Video: Last Week Of Testimony In Bradley Manning Prosecution

This is likely to be the last week of testimony in the Bradley Manning prosecution.  Some twenty witnesses are expected to testify during the final portion of the sentencing phase, including Bradley Manning himself. Communities are preparing to respond to the sentencing of Bradley Manning which is likely to occur next week. The Bradley Manning Support Network is calling on people to respond immediately after the sentence is announced. Our primary message for these response rallies: 'President Obama: Pardon Bradley Manning.' Please share this post widely on Facebook, Twitter and other social media. The corporate media shamefully has not covered this trial or fairly reported on this case so many Americans still do not understand what the prosecution of Bradley Manning means. It is our responsibility to let them know the importance of the actions Bradley Manning took for all Americans, indeed for the people of the world.

VIDEO: Questioning Underlying Structures Of Property, Power Is “Off The Table”

But if we go back to segment one, which we started talking about identity, there is the feeling in the West that you can assert your individual identity. Now, I say feeling'cause a lot of it is you are a cog in the wheel at work, in--you know, there's very few of us--and, you know, I'm one of the lucky ones, as are you. I mean, some of us are involved in creative work, where we get--to a large extent assert who we are. Most people at work don't. You're on an assembly line, or even if you are in management, you are a cog in a big corporation. But when you get home, you can choose your own music, you can do this. A lot of this sense of asserting identity is actually through consumerism. But still you have this feeling that you are free to do that, where in the Soviet Union, at least the outside perception of the Soviet Union was you weren't, that you were only a cog in a big wheel.

VIDEO: Great Rift – Capitalism And Metabolism Of Nature And Production

We need a society that is geared, as István Mészáros always tells us, to substantive equality. And no compromise on the issue of equality. Bolívar said equality is the law of laws. So we need substantive equality and we need ecological sustainability. And they have to go together. How do we know they have to go together? Because what is causing the ecological damage and what is causing the social damage is the same thing: it's the rift in the production system; it's the alienation of nature, which is one with the alienation of human society.

Video: Direct Action Blocks First U.S. Tar Sands Project In Utah

Environmental activists chained themselves to heavy equipment Monday to protest improvements to a road they say will open Utah's rugged Book Cliffs area to tar sands and oil shale development. The protesters also held banners decrying plans by U.S. Oil Sands to develop the nation's first commercial tar sands mine near PR Springs on the border of Grand and Uintah counties. "We're here today as climate justice organizers to protect the land and the water system from companies like U.S. Oil Sands as well as any other interests that might try to develop the oil shale and tar sands reserves on this land," said protester Lauren Wood, who described herself as "a third-generation river runner and a seventh-generation Utahn."

The protest took place three days before the Aug. 6 anniversary of the refinery accident that resulted in a toxic cloud that injured six Chevron workers and sent more than 15,000 Richmond residents to local hospitals after breathing polluted air.
