He was carrying a book, a book published by The Real News Network with Gore Vidal on the history of the national security state. We gather Assange may have been trying to send the world a message, as did the Washington Post. Governments’ (monstrous and criminal) behavior should not be secret. People should know what their government is doing, and what a powerful foreign government is doing to their own countries. The actual results of the work of WikiLeaks have been hugely beneficial. If U.S. courts were to get busy prosecuting the crimes exposed by WikiLeaks, rather than trying to turn the act of revealing them into some sort of crime, they would simply not have time for the latter.

Earlier this morning, London police entered the Ecuadorian embassy and arrested Julian Assange. This was in response to a US extradition request. Assange is expected to be extradited and stand trial in the Eastern District of Virginia. Press freedom, civil liberties, and human rights groups have long opposed the extradition of Assange to the US. They have warned prosecuting Assange for publishing information would be a terrible precedent. This would be especially true if charges were brought under the Espionage Act. While the Espionage Act has been increasingly used against those who leak classified information to the media it has never been used against the publisher of information.

Julian Assange has appeared in the dock at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after being arrested at the Ecuadorian embassy this morning. Assange has been further arrested over an alleged conspiracy with Chelsea Manning “to break a password to a classified US government computer”, the US Department of Justice said. With grey hair tied into a ponytail and long beard, Assange saluted the public gallery before giving a thumbs up.

When Julian Assange does leave the embassy, it will be important to try to focus a hostile media on why it is Assange is actually wanted for extradition Entirely unexpectedly, I have been down in London this last three days outside and around the Ecuadorean Embassy, following WikiLeaks’ announcement that their sources indicate Julian might be expelled within hours or days. Plainly Julian’s position within the Embassy has deteriorated fundamentally, to the extent he is now treated openly as a closely guarded prisoner. I still have not myself been granted permission to visit him and he is now very isolated.

The specter of Assange being evicted from the Ecuadorian embassy is again at the forefront of the news. The Associated Press wrote that Moreno complained that WikiLeaks was intercepting his communications and invading his privacy. Importantly, AP noted that Moreno provided no evidence for his claims. People power needs to mobilize. If people care deeply about their right to be informed, to be apprised of their government partaking in war crimes, then millions must take to the streets and squares, especially in Norway and Britain.

GENEVA (Reuters) - The United Nations torture investigator called on Ecuador on Friday not to expel Wikileaks founder Julian Assange from its London embassy, voicing concern that he could be extradited to the United States and possibly face mistreatment. A British friend said Assange was “prepared” for expulsion from the building he has lived in for nearly seven years, after Ecuador’s President Lenin Moreno said he had “repeatedly violated” the terms of his asylum. Moreno told radio stations on Tuesday that Assange did not have the right to “hack private accounts or phones” and could not intervene in the politics of other countries, especially those with friendly relations with Ecuador.

News broke yesterday that Julian Assange is facing imminent expulsion from the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. The news was leaked by whistleblowers. The justification for the expulsion is that Wikileaks released the INA Papers, which implicate the Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno in corruption. The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture released a press release saying:  “In my assessment, if Mr. Assange were to be expelled from the Embassy of Ecuador, he is likely to be arrested by British authorities and extradited to the United States,” said the UN expert.

Chelsea Manning’s legal team submitted a motion on Monday to the US Eastern District Court of Virginia for her immediate release pending her appeal of the decision that sent her to jail indefinitely on March 8. Manning was imprisoned by District Judge Claude Hilton on civil contempt charges for courageously refusing to testify before a secret grand jury preparing a frame-up case against WikiLeaks publisher Julian Assange. The latest motion argues that the judge’s decision to remand Manning to the Alexandria Detention Center was in violation of her constitutional rights and should be reversed.

It is literally impossible for him to hack anything under the surveillance they gave on him in the Embassy especially since he has no internet access. Also, Wikileaks simply tweeted a link to the INA papers. Moreno has been accused in a NY Times article of attempting to sell Assange to the United States government in the past. According to some sources for as high as 10 billion dollars.
