Abortion

Jesus, Endless War, And The Rise Of American Fascism

The Democratic Party – which had 50 years to write Roe v Wade into law with Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama in full control of the White House and Congress at the inception of their presidencies – is banking its electoral strategy around the expected Supreme Court decision to lift the judicial prohibition on the ability of states to enact laws restricting or banning abortions. I doubt it will work. The Democratic Party’s hypocrisy and duplicity is the fertilizer for Christian fascism. Its exclusive focus on the culture wars and identity politics at the expense of economic, political, and social justice fueled a right-wing backlash and stoked the bigotry, racism, and sexism it sought to curtail.

A Socialist Perspective On The Abortion Rights Struggle

On the night of May 3, a US Supreme Court draft decision regarding the landmark Roe v. Wade decision was leaked to the press. As per the draft, penned by conservative Justice Samuel Alito, the Supreme Court is set to overturn the historic decision, eliminating the right to abortion for millions of women. In response, thousands have taken to the streets of US cities, demanding that the right to abortion be protected. Activists and the millions of women in the streets hope that this outpour can sway the final Supreme Court decision. Karina Garcia is an organizer with the Party for Socialism and Liberation and a writer for socialist feminist magazine Breaking the Chains. She has been organizing since she was 17 years old, when she founded a women’s rights organization at her high school.

Abortion Rights Protesters Demonstrate In Indianapolis

Tensions were running high Wednesday evening in downtown Indianapolis as protesters both for and against abortion met in demonstrations at Monument Circle. The crowd of at least 500 people was made up mostly of pro-abortion rights activists, with about 25 anti-abortion protesters. Police blocked off nearby streets as the two groups converged at close distances, sometimes yelling at each other. The pro-abortion rights group chanted "abortion ban has got to go" and "we stand with Roe", while the anti-abortion group chanted "we are the pro-life generation and we will abolish abortion." Anna Benz, 35, of Castleton, said Wednesday was the first protest she has ever attended.

Democrats: The Ukraine War Is Over

The emotional outrage of the Democrats has now been redirected to the Supreme Court. This happened after Politico published a leaked draft of the majority opinion on constitutional protection of reproductive rights: The draft opinion is a full-throated, unflinching repudiation of the 1973 decision which guaranteed federal constitutional protections of abortion rights and a subsequent 1992 decision – Planned Parenthood v. Casey – that largely maintained the right. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” Alito writes. Chief Justice Roberts has confirmed the authenticity of the 'leaked' draft but added that it does not represent the courts final decision. The draft is dated February 10 2022. It was likely a tactical decision by Democrats to let it 'leak' now. The war to 'weaken Russia' is going badly for the 'west' and the U.S. can do little to change that.

Democrats Have No Plan To Stop The Overturning Of Roe V. Wade

On May 2, 2022, POLITICO published a leaked initial draft majority opinion ostensibly written by Justice Samuel Alito indicating that the Supreme Court majority intends to strike down Roe v. Wade in its impending ruling on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. The Supreme Court is on the verge of overturning Roe v. Wade. And yet, there is currently no cohesive national campaign from either the Democratic party or large reproductive rights organizations to fight back. Abortion activists and healthcare workers are becoming increasingly frustrated with this failure, often finding themselves at odds with their supposed advocates as they try to ensure access to abortion in states like Texas and Kentucky, which are already facing extreme limitations.

Supreme Court Declares War On Women And Abortion Rights

The Supreme court has declared war against women and our basic rights to control our own bodies. Now is the time to fight back. Millions of people going into the streets would make it clear that without justice there can be no peace. A heroic individual has leaked to the public the decision by the Supreme Court to end abortion rights by overturning the Roe v Wade decision, and the later Casey decision. Neither the church nor the state has the right to tell women what we can do with our own bodies. The Supreme Court has demonstrated throughout history that it is an enemy of democracy and an enemy of people’s rights. It upheld slavery as a legal institution until the Civil War ended it.

ALEC Leaders Boast About Anti-Abortion, Anti-Trans Bills

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a pay-to-play network of conservative state lawmakers and business lobbyists that writes model legislation, claims that it no longer works on social policy. But videos of ALEC-led events, obtained by the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD), tell a very different story. At the 40th anniversary meeting of the Council for National Policy (CNP) in May, ALEC leaders boasted about their extensive efforts to advance state legislation to severely restrict access to abortion and limit the rights of trans students, as well as voter suppression bills. CNP is a secretive network of far-right Christian political figures and donors that works behind the scenes to influence Washington. “We’ve had a history of working on other issues like gun rights and social issues and things like that, which has not ended well for ALEC,” said CEO Lisa Nelson at a “Saving American Through the States” action session at the group’s meeting.

Texas Doctor Provided Abortion In Violation Of New Law

A Texas doctor has revealed that he recently performed an abortion in violation of the state's new controversial law that prohibits nearly all abortions after roughly six weeks into a pregnancy, arguing that he “had a duty of care to this patient.” Alan Braid, a San Antonio-based physician, wrote in an op-ed published by The Washington Post Saturday that on Sept. 6, just five days after the Texas abortion ban went into effect, that he “provided an abortion to a woman who, though still in her first trimester, was beyond the state’s new limit.” Braid, who began his obstetrics and gynecology residency at a San Antonio hospital in 1972, said that during the year before abortion was recognized as a constitutional right in the 1973 landmark Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade, he saw “three teenagers die from illegal abortions.”

Democrats, Abortion And Phony Politics

Most leftists in this country still remain loyal to the Democratic Party despite decades of deception, overt collusion with ruling class interests, and support of U.S. imperialism. The Democrats use a variety of means to keep the support of millions of people who yearn for something other than the excuses and double dealing they are constantly offered. Pointing to Republicans as the embodiment of all evil is one of their methods, and no issue suits this strategy more than abortion. Democrats point to Republicans’ strict anti-abortion stance to keep their left members in line. Democrats who want to see progressive initiatives enacted still feel tied to their party and convince themselves they have no choice but to be snookered on a regular basis. This dilemma of going along with treachery is particularly acute for Black people.

Mexico Court Says Criminalising Abortion Unconstitutional

Mexico’s Supreme Court has ruled that it is unconstitutional to penalise abortion, a major victory for women’s health and reproductive rights that comes amid a “green wave” of abortion decriminalisation in Latin America. The Mexican court’s decision on Tuesday follows moves to decriminalise abortion at the state level, although most of the country still has tough laws in place against women terminating their pregnancy early. “This is a historic step for the rights of women,” said Supreme Court Justice Luis Maria Aguilar. The court unanimously annulled several provisions of a law from Coahuila – a state on the border with the US state of Texas – that had made abortion a criminal act, and its decision will immediately only affect the northern border state.

Doctor Fights To Let Pharmacists Prescribe Birth Control

Indiana - People love the pill. As a pediatrician and a researcher who studies access to contraception, I speak to patients from all walks of life, and, even if they choose not to use the birth control pill themselves, most people support making it affordable and easy to access for everyone. Its near-universal support is not surprising: Birth control can improve people’s lives by giving them the freedom to plan their families, allowing them to delay pregnancy until they decide they are ready. Still, for many people, getting to a doctor to get a prescription for birth control isn’t as easy as it should be. That’s why I support and advocate for legislation that would make Indiana the 20th state to expand access to birth control by allowing pharmacists to directly prescribe and dispense the birth control pill and patch.

Roe V. Wade In Grave Danger

A draconian Texas law banning abortions beyond around six weeks of pregnancy took effect at midnight after the conservative U.S. Supreme Court did not act to block it on Tuesday, a decision that could have major implications for reproductive rights across the country. While the Supreme Court could still grant an emergency request to suspend the law in the coming hours, the justices' decision to remain silent Tuesday allows Texas to begin implementing what rights groups have characterized as the most restrictive state-level abortion ban since the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Abortion providers estimate that the measure could bar care for "at least 85% of Texas abortion patients."

Abortion Ban Repealed In New Mexico After Years Of Struggle

Radical and progressive activists recently led the way to an important victory for working-class women in New Mexico. For the past three years, several organizations in New Mexico, including the Party for Socialism and Liberation, have struggled to force the repeal of a 1969 New Mexico law which made it illegal for women to make their own decisions about their bodies. Finally reacting to significant protests, on Feb. 26, the governor signed a bill which repealed the law that made abortion illegal. This ban was, of course, unenforceable under the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. However, with the new conservative-dominated Supreme Court, the real fear that this latent law could come into effect spurred action.  PSL members joined other organizations in a series of protests during the 2018 legislative session, including a rally which disrupted proceedings.

Traveling 800 Miles For Abortion Care

Republican leaders in Texas are further exacerbating the harm of the state’s raft of anti-choice regulations by stopping legal abortion amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) and Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) ordered a halt to abortion care as part of Texas’ response to the COVID-19 outbreak; on Tuesday, conservative judges on the U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, including President Trump appointee Judge Kyle Duncan, upheld the policy. The abortion ban, scheduled to end April 22, will push care out of reach for many, force people to seek abortion later in their pregnancy, and create onerous travel requirements that haven’t existed since before the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade.

New Study Destroys The Central Argument Behind ‘Abortion Reversal’

Ninety-nine percent of women don’t regret their abortions five years after getting the procedure, according to a new study that undercuts the myth of abortion regret perpetuated by state lawmakers in support of “abortion reversal” laws. So-called “abortion reversal” laws require clinicians to provide patients with inaccurate information about the possibility of reversing a medication abortion. “Abortion reversal” is a medically unproven, experimental protocol pushed by anti-choice activists who claim medication abortions can be reversed in the middle of the process: after a patient has taken the initial dose of mifepristone but before they take the misoprostol pill.
