My Experience Marching With Black Lives Matter In Chicago

By Chauncey DeVega for Salon - Several months ago, I personally experienced the worst of democracy at Donald Trump’s “no-show” rally in Chicago, when the raw passion, racism, bigotry, and violence he encourages among his supporters almost caused a riot at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion. On Saturday, I experienced some of the best aspects of democracy as I marched in the streets of downtown Chicago with members of Black Lives Matter and their allies who were protesting police brutality against people of color.

Man Who Posted Alton Sterling Shooting Video Arrested 24 Hours Later

By Carlos Miller for PINAC - The man who made the video of the Alton Sterling shooting death go viral, one of two brutal videos from two states that sparked a national outrage and led to the shooting deaths of five Dallas police officers during an anti-police brutality protest Thursday – was arrested 24 hours later. Chris LeDay believes it was an act of retaliation. Considering police handcuffed and leg-shackled him after accusing him of assault and battery – only to jail him overnight for unpaid traffic fines – it certainly appears that way.

Dallas Shooter Was Planning A Bigger Attack

By Staff of Reuters - Baton Rouge has serious problems in their police. They need to be removed from office. Their tactics are totally inappropriate. The gunman who killed five Dallas police officers appeared to have been planning a larger attack, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said on Sunday, after a search of shooter Micah Johnson's home revealed bomb-making materials and a journal.

Right Wing Activist Pulls Gun On #BLM Protest

By Arun Gupta for Raw Story - Shouts and yells erupted on the fringe of a Black Lives Matter rally in downtown Portland. A local right-wing agitator, Michael Strickland, was backing down the street away from a few dozen people, including masked anarchists clad in black. Strickland is involved with a YouTube channel, Laughing at Liberals, which shows up at leftist protests to film people and put them online. Strickland held a tripod-mounted video camera in his left hand. His right hand grabbed near his waistband. Seconds later, facing the crowd, he pulled a Glock 27 from a holster on his right side.

Black Lives Matter March Shuts Down Bridge Between Memphis And Arkansas

By Sarah K. Burris for Raw Story - Black Live Matter protesters marched along Interstate 40 Sunday evening to advocate for the lives taken by police in the last week. Marchers began the protest in downtown Memphis at 6 p.m. at the FedEx Forum, according to Fox13, but once they began walking on I-40 to the bridge, traffic was shut down. Hundreds stayed on the bridge, though Tennessee Highway Patrol and the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office helped the Memphis Police Department keep the protest nonviolent.

It’s Time You Realize #AllLivesMatter Is Racist

By Rachel Charlene Lewis for Advocate - It seems that whenever we talk about race and #BlackLivesMatter comes up, a whole lot of people get super, super uncomfortable. So, naturally, they resort to the common retort of #AllLivesMatter. However, that logic is, well, illogical. We want everyone to do the important work of combatting racism in the LGBT and queer community, but also in the world at large, so we decided to compile some super helpful info to help out the #AllLivesMatter camp.

One Simple Change To Law Could Make Prosecuting Killer Cops Easier

By Zaid Jilani for The Intercept - GRAPHIC VIDEO ILLUSTRATING gruesome police killings of African-American men in Louisiana and Minnesota has set off promises of a federal investigation, at least in the former case, but many are skeptical that it will lead to any prosecutions. Police involved in even these high-profile cases of abuse have rarely faced successful indictments, let alone prosecutions. However, at the federal level, a simple change to the law would make it more likely that abusive cops face punishment for their behavior.

Protesters Demand Justice After Release Of Brooklyn Road Rage Shooting Video

By Scott Heins for Gothamist - Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Manhattan last night, demanding an end to nationwide systemic racism and police brutality in the wake of three widely-publicized killings of black men by law enforcement officers. Saturday's protest was led by Zayanahla Vines, the nephew of Delrawn Small, who was shot and killed by an off-duty NYPD officer during a Brooklyn road rage incident last week. Protesters shut down traffic on many busy roadways, including the FDR Drive, as they waved homemade signs and called out to bystanders

Newsletter: US Racism Is Killing Us

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers. This was a traumatic week. Two more unjustified killings of black men were caught on video and shared widely. Mass protests erupted throughout the country. And then, at the end of a Dallas protest against police violence, a lone gunman shot 12 people, killing five police officers. A graphic video shows Baton Rouge police shooting Alton Sterling outside of a convenience store where he was selling CDs. Two police have him on the ground, then shots ring out and Sterling is dead. Forty-eight hours later in Minnesota, Philando Castile is shot dead at a traffic stop while he is reaching for his wallet. In the aftermath of Castile's fatal shooting, a video made by his girlfriend from the passenger seat is posted on Facebook and goes viral. Police violence is a growing public heath threat that is wounding, traumatizing and killing people.

Deray Is Debutante At Aspen One-Percenters Coming Out Party

By Bruce A. Dixon for Black Agenda Report. It's been a good spring and summer so far for Teach For America alum Deray McKesson. After raising a ton of out of town money the dude in the blue vest finished sixth in the Baltimore mayoral election with a mere 2% of the vote. He was promptly awarded a six figure yearly salary as “interim chief of human capital,” the current term of art for personnel department directors. And last weekend, he was one of the headliners at the annual Aspen Ideas Festival. When the Aspen Institute flies you to Colorado for the weekend to rub shoulders with the elite, hands you that honorarium check and lauds you as an example of up and coming leadership, it means you’re in. If it's your first time, and last weekend was Deray McKesson's first time at Aspen, it's your debutante ball, marking your coming out, or maybe going in among the one percenters. Aspen signifies that your bones are made

Black Lives Matter Condemns Violence By Police & Against Police

By Black Lives Matter. After the murders of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile at the hands of police, we marched and protested to highlight the urgent need to transform policing in America, to call for justice, transparency and accountability, and to demand that Black Lives Matter. Protests in Dallas were cut short when a lone gunman targeted and attacked 11 police officers, killing five. This is a tragedy. We should reject all of this. Black activists have raised the call for an end to violence, not an escalation of it. The police killings were the actions of a lone gunman. To assign the actions of one person to an entire movement is dangerous and irresponsible. We continue our efforts to bring about a better world for all of us.

How Protesters Actually Helped The Dallas Police

By Tom Cahill for US Uncut. Black Lives Matter protesters had been working with local police from the early stages of planning the march, and the demonstration was completely peaceful. In one photo, a white police officer and a black police officer are seen posing with a black protester, all of whom are smiling. Additionally, the organizers of Dallas’ Black Lives Matter march issued a public statement, saying the group “does not condone violence against any human being, and we condemn anyone who wants to commit violence.” As soon as the shooting started, Black Lives Matter protesters helped police by identifying where the shots were coming from. Why Police Violence Will Not End

By Feisal G. Mohamed for The Huffington Post - Let’s begin with the obvious. There can be no justification for the murder of Philando Castile, Alton Sterling or any other innocent person, and anyone denying that African-Americans suffer disproportionately from police violence is either deluded or disingenuous. Amongst the deluded and disingenuous are those who carry such reactionary banners as “All Lives Matter” or “Blue Lives Matter.” A steady stream of death is not a series of missteps or errors in judgment; it is a willed choice, an approach to policing in action.

Thousands March On U.S. Capitol Following Police Shootings

By John Zangas for DC Media Group - Washington, DC–The shootings of two Black men by police caught on cell phone video prompted thousands to protest at the White House and Capitol building on Thursday night. Infuriated by lack of action to curb police violence against Blacks, a crowd of hundreds even pushed past barricades and attempted to ascend the Capitol steps. Several members of Congress left a floor session to address the protesters. Thousands assembled at the White House following the release of streaming video posted by the girlfriend of Philando Castile, who was shot by a Minnesota police officer during a traffic stop.

Protests Across the Country In Response To Police Killings

By Staff for Popular Resistance. In response to the police killings of Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, LA and Philando Castile in Falcon Heights, Minnesota there were protests held in many cities across the country. The New York Times reported "Baton Rouge Is Passionate, and Peaceful, After Shooting of Alton Sterling" writing: The protest of the fatal police shooting of a CD vendor here in Louisiana’s capital had many of the trappings of similar flare-ups around the country: blaring music, young men with faces obscured by bandannas, and obscene and brutal sentiments directed toward the local police department, on angry tongues and homemade placards. But as Wednesday night’s street rally flowed into Thursday morning, it had managed to be as peaceful as it was passionate. In Minnesoata, outrage grew over the death of Philando Castile, killed in a traffic stop. The video of the aftermath published on Facebook by his girlfriend after the shooting went viral and caused immediate reactions. The police did not even check for a pulse or administer first aid.
