Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Reflects On Movement’s First Three Years

By Sonali Kolhatkar for Truth Dig - In July 2013, Patrisse Cullors, Opal Tometi and Alicia Garza, three prominent activists in their communities, joined together and coined the simple yet powerful refrain “Black Lives Matter” in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. A year later, an uprising in Ferguson, Mo., over the police killing of Michael Brown catapulted the phrase and the activists it empowered into a movement.

Why Alton Sterling And Philando Castile Are Dead

By Kai Wright for The Nation - Alton Sterling and Philando Castile are dead, joining a long roll call of black people killed by officials acting in the name of public safety. And so the nation now begins a process so familiar as to have become rote. Many of us will want desperately to know more about these men's lives, not merely their deaths. After each of the many executions we have collectively mourned, I have grasped for those kinds of details -- some reminder that black lives do actually matter, to somebody.

Our House! #BlackLivesMatter At The Capitol

By Staff of Art Killing Apathy - Two days after the death of Alton Sterling and one day after the death of Philando Castile, activists took to the streets in several major cities to once again call for justice and to disrupt the workings of a grotesquely racist and unequal system. At the start of the protest here in DC, many people seemed at a loss for words. As activist YahNé Ndgo told me when I spoke to her via skype today, “It’s really hard to know what to say at this point. After what happened to Trayvon Martin, you had a lot to say. After Tamir Rice, you had a lot to say. And at a certain point, you just say the same thing over and over again.”

Snipers Kill 5 Police Officers During Dallas Protest

By Nick Visser for The Huffington Post - Downtown Dallas was in lockdown early Friday, after snipers shot and killed five police officers “ambush-style” during a Black Lives Matter protest in the Texas city. At least seven other police officers and two civilians were also injured in the deadliest day for police in the U.S. since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. Dallas Police Chief David Brown said early Friday three suspects were in custody and police were still in negotiations with another suspect, who was being uncooperative and at times exchanging gunfire with officers in a parking garage.

Aftermath Of Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting On Video

By Pat Pheifer and Claude Peck for Star Tribune - A St. Paul man died Wednesday night after being shot by police in Falcon Heights, the immediate aftermath of which was shown in a video recorded by the man's girlfriend as she sat next to him and which was widely shared on Facebook. The girlfriend started the live-stream video with the man in the driver’s seat slumped next to her, his white T-shirt soaked with blood on the left side. In the video, taken with her phone, she says they were pulled over at Larpenteur Avenue and Fry Street for a broken taillight.

Graphic Video Shows Baton Rouge Police Shooting Alton Sterling

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - A graphic video shows a Baton Rouge police officer shooting and killing Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man who was selling CDs in front of a convenience store early Tuesday morning. The video appears to have been shot by a witness to the incident. The Baton Rouge Police Department has not provided many details on what happened between the officers and Sterling or what caused the officer to pull his firearm, according to The New Orleans Advocate. Investigators are still working to find out what caused the incident to escalate.

Black Lives Matter Toronto Stands By Pride Parade Shutdown

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - When the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter discovered they were the honored guests at the city’s 2016 pride parade, the group wasn’t very enthused. And on Sunday, activists from the Toronto chapter of Black Lives Matter brought the city’s parade to a halt for about 30 minutes to urge for the inclusion of more black LGBT members in the festivities. “We understood that Toronto Pride has had a history of anti-black racism,” Janaya Khan, a co-founder Black Lives Matter Toronto, told The Huffington Post.

Personal Tragedies Fuel Fierce Activism

By Emma Niles for Truthdig. The Black Lives Matter panel at Politicon on Sunday was different from any other. A certain heaviness spread throughout the cavernous Pasadena, Calif., conference hall as the panelists took their seats, although moments before the room had been filled with chatter and laughter. The audience knew this particular panel would not have the pure entertainment value of the other discussions held throughout the weekend. “#BlackLivesMatter: Political Prisoners vs. Police Impunity” took place on the second day of Politicon, the “unconventional convention” attended by thousands of political junkies. The panel served as a reminder that this country’s history of racism is still a critical factor in race relations today.

No Charges For Texas Police Officer Manhandling Black Teens At Pool Party

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - WASHINGTON — A Texas grand jury has decided not to indict McKinney Police Officer Eric Casebolt in the manhandling of a black teenager at a pool party last June. After police responded to disturbance calls at Craig Ranch North Community Pool, a cell phone video caught Casebolt yanking 15-year-old Dajerria Becton to the ground and pulling his gun on two other teens. One of the teens, Miles Jai Thomas, told The Huffington Post that the cops showed up after a fight between two adults and “started cursing and yelling at us.”

Baltimore Police Officer Found Not Guilty In Freddie Gray Killing

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - A judge has cleared Baltimore Police Officer Caesar Goodson Jr. of all charges in the 2015 death of 25-year-old Freddie Gray. Goodson, 46, drove the van that transported Gray to central booking; Gray later died of injuries sustained while he was in police custody. Goodson was facing the most serious charges of all six officers charged in connection to Gray’s death, including depraved-heart murder, a second-degree charge that carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison. Goodson was also indicted for second-degree assault, misconduct in office, reckless endangerment and three counts of manslaughter. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.

#BlackLivesMatter Speaks Out On Orlando Killings

By Staff of Black Lives Matter - Homegrown terror is the product of a long history of colonialism, including state and vigilante violence. It is the product of white supremacy and capitalism, which deforms the spirit and fuels interpersonal violence. We especially hold space for our Latinx family now, knowing that the vast majority of those murdered were Latinx, and many were specifically Puerto Rican. From the forced migration of thousands of young people from the island of Puerto Rico to Orlando, to the deadly forced migration throughout Latin America and the Caribbean...

Black Lives Matter Co-Founder Wants To Live In ‘A World Where All Lives Matter’

By Julia Craven for The Huffington Post - WASHINGTON — One of the co-founders of Black Lives Matter says she wants to live in a world where all lives matter. During a keynote speech at the 2016 Personal Democracy Forum on Wednesday Alicia Garza discussed the role black political power plays in revolutionizing democracy. “Democracy is increasingly hard to define, especially in today’s political context.

Newsletter: Creating “Positive Peace”

By Margaret Flowers and Kevin Zeese. This weekend the Bilderberg Group is holding its secretive annual retreat in Dresden, Germany. The invitation-only gathering of elites from North America and Northern Europe includes heads of finance and industry, heads of state and intelligence officials. Who knows what schemes they'll cook up? They don't keep minutes or allow the press in and attendees can't quote what was said. It can't be good for the people or the planet. The Global Peace Index was just released for 2016 and it shows that the decade-long trend of increasing violence is continuing. Of note, the inequality between countries is growing; the most violent countries deteriorated by a greater degree than in the past. Countries that are the most peaceful also have the greatest resilience.

Partial Victory For Black Lives Matter

By Sonali Kolhatkar for Truth Dig - Hundreds of people crowded outside the Pasadena Courthouse on Tuesday—which was also California’s primary election day—jostling one another on the cramped sidewalk to show support for Jasmine Richards. The 28-year-old Richards, who has adopted the last name Abdullah to show kinship with her mentor, Melina Abdullah, faced a sentencing hearing after being convicted of a controversial charge that was until recently called “felony lynching.”

One Year & 44 Rounds Later, Questions In Baltimore Case Of Keith Davis

By Alice Speri for The Intercept - ONE YEAR AGO this week, Keith Davis Jr. almost became another rallying cry against police brutality when four Baltimore police officers chased him into a garage and fired off 44 rounds at him, striking him three times, including in the face. Had he died, Davis would have become the first person killed by Baltimore police since Freddie Gray, who died in April 2015 of a severed spine after officers loaded him handcuffed, shackled and unrestrained into a police van.
