Apathy: The Ultimate Enemy

I find myself standing alone when I now answer the questions directed at me following the endless atrocities and scandals. I am no longer the provider of the popular answer. My answer is one of the most unpopular, if not the most, in the eyes and ears of the public. I accept the consequences. I may never be sought as an opinion-provider after the never-ending breaking news on ever-expanding and continuing scandals. And that’s okay. Because I know there will be no hope of any meaningful action or changes so long as we stick with our national pride. The enemy has been us; we the people. We the majority – in denial. Our national apathy. Our large majority’s denial, indifference; apathy. Apathy is a must ingredient for any police state, authoritarian regime, dictatorship, for abuses of power, for corruption, national atrocities, genocide … Some ingredients may be decreased, increased or substituted, but one key ingredient remains constant: Public Apathy.

G8 Protests in London: Carnival Against Capitalism

Riot vans and a strong police presence were deployed in London today amid demonstrations ahead of the G8 conference. Around 100 police officers were in Soho, central London, where protesters with banners were believed to be occupying a former police station in Beak Street. The move by police came as protesters from the group Stop G8 planned a "Carnival Against Capitalism" in central London, ahead of the G8 conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland. There were reports on Twitter of strong police presences in the Oxford Circus and Regent Street area of central London and Golden Square, close to Beak Street. The leaders of the world's eight wealthiest countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, are due to meet at the luxury Lough Erne resort in Co Fermanagh for the two-day conference next week.

No Compromise With Hyrdo-Fracking: Ban It, Don’t Regulate It

The conflict between compromisers of Gang Green and front-line environmentalists sharpened in the fracking debate. A manifesto calling for no compromise with hydro-fracking clarifies the issues: "We assert that fracking is a moral crisis. In a time of climate emergency, it is wrong to further deepen our dependency on fossil fuels. . . We reject the legitimacy of Illinois’ fracking regulatory bill, which was the result of closed-door negotiations between industry representatives and compromise-oriented environmental organizations. Responsible only to their funders and their members, these environmental groups do not represent us nor are they empowered to negotiate on our behalf. We consider the fracking regulatory bill to be a subversion of both science and democracy. . . It is an unjust law."

Occupy Wall Street Activists in US Rally in Solidarity with Turkish Protesters

Hundreds of people, including activists from the Occupy Wall Street movement, staged a demonstration in New York City to voice their support for anti-government rallies in the Turkish city of Istanbul. The protesters gathered in Zuccotti Park - the birthplace of the Occupy Wall Street movement in Lower Manhattan - on Saturday, and marched nearly 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Turkish consulate. Some of the demonstrators carried signs reading "Istanbul is not alone," while others waved the Turkish national flag. The goal to direct public attention to Istanbul's Gezi Park protests, and the violent crackdown on the protests by Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

The Naked Emperor Exposes Ron Kirk and the TPP

If you haven't seen their videos yet, here is a new one on former US Trade Representative Ron Kirk and the secret TransPacific Partnership (TPP). You can learn more about the TPP at FlushtheTPP.org. TheNakedEmperor.com is a website created by three people, John Sullivan, Richard Bryers and Tere Itteralde. They produce two series of videos: one featuring the Naked Emperor who simply and unabashedly tells the truth about corporations like Monsanto and ways that the looting class takes advantage of people and the other featuring Oli Garch who exposes those who are in power. A recent video produced by the threesome exposes the intention behind the TransPacific Partnership. We encourage you to watch it and to check out their other videos on The Naked Emperor.

Turkish Trade Unions Join Protests Against Erdogan

Turkish trade unionists banging drums and trailing banners marched into an Istanbul square on Wednesday, joining unprecedented protests against Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan over what they see as his authoritarian rule. Members of more than a dozen unions chanting "Tayyip resign" marched down a major avenue towards Taksim Square. Youths skirmished with police in cities across the country in a fifth night of troubles. The United States has held up Erdogan's Turkey as an example of an Islamic democracy that could be imitated throughout the Middle East. But domestic opponents argue that, for all the economic advances under Erdogan and early democratic reform, events have recently taken a more authoritarian turn.

Monsanto Gives Up Fight for GM Plants in Europe

The German Agriculture Ministry said Monsanto's move was a corporate decision and would not comment further. But it added it was no secret the ministry had been highly critical of gene modification technologies. "The promises of GM industry have not come true for European agriculture, nor have they for the agriculture in developing and emerging economies," the ministry said in a statement. In Germany, the protest movement against GM plants has been particularly strong for years. Vociferous rallying prompted the government in 2009 to prohibit the growing of Monsanto's MON810 GM maize variety.

Horrific Costs of Free Trade

“It’s really sick,” says Robert Scott, director of trade and manufacturing policy at the Economic Policy Institute, a strong critic of the CTPA. “US multinationals have been associated with helping to fund some of these paramilitary death squads that are operating in Colombia. You have to understand, the motivation for negotiating these trade agreements on the part of multinational businesses is to drive down their cost of production, take advantage of low wages and take advantage of a totally de-unionized labor environment.” Just as the CTPA threatens to exacerbate the already obscene levels of violence taking place outside the sphere of the government’s conflict with FARC, many feel that the peace talks alone will not halt the humanitarian disaster.

More Than 2,000 Blockupy European Central Bank

Thousands of demonstrators from the anti-capitalist Blockupy movement have cut off access to the European Central Bank (ECB) in Frankfurt to protest against policymakers' handling of Europe's debt crisis. The crowd, estimated by police at roughly 2,500 protesters, was met by armed police wearing helmets and riot gear and accompanied by Alsatian dogs. Trucks with water cannons stood by and a helicopter hovered overhead. At least 20 protesters held up inflatable mattresses with the slogan "War Starts Here" written on them. The Deutsche Bank is their next target to protest what they see as land grabs in Asia, as well as [speculation] in food prices.

A Realistic Radical Remaking of the Economy

We are in a “prehistory” of a radical remaking of the economy—not corporate capitalist, state socialist, or welfare-statist. The historian Howard Brick, in Transcending Capitalism: Visions of a New Society in Modern American Thought, criticized the post-capitalist imaginings of the past century for failing to make clear how and when the segue to the next stage would take place. The merit of economic democracy thinking is that it is pragmatic and realistic. The present system while failing most Americans and in collapse is resilient but there are growing patterns of resistance. How and, when will resistance get us out of the economic corruption of corporate capitalism? Economic democracy is developing a comprehensive alternative that is as theoretically rigorous and practical, with a blueprint for an economic democracy political program.

Monsanto Threatens Democracy: 16 of 22 Monsanto Lobbyists Held Government Jobs

Ninety-three percent of Americans support labeling foods that contain genetically altered crops. The discrepancy between public opinion and the status quo can be explained by two competing theories. Either the polling methodology used by seasoned media organizations is flawed, or there is an active lobbying effort designed thwart the democratic process. Michael Taylor, Obama's 'food czar', was former head of Monstanto’s food and drug law practice, and was appointed to the FDA position by President Barack Obama in 2013. Coincidently, Obama was ranked No. 2 in political action committee contributions from Monstanto between 2011 and 2012.

Chomsky on Anarchism, Propaganda, Libertarianism, Free College Education and Student Action

Anarchism is suspicious and skeptical of domination, authority, and hierarchy. It seeks structures of hierarchy and domination in human life over the whole range, extending from, say, patriarchal families to, say, imperial systems, and it asks whether those systems are justified. It assumes that the burden of proof for anyone in a position of power and authority lies on them. Their authority is not self-justifying. They have to give a reason for it, a justification. And if they can’t justify that authority and power and control, which is the usual case, then the authority ought to be dismantled and replaced by something more free and just.

‘Blockupy’ Protesters Surround ECB in Frankfurt

German police said at least 1,000 people had gathered in the rain in the financial district by Friday morning, linking arms and blocking streets. The Blockupy protesters also plan to block access to other financial institutions in Frankfurt, including Deutsche Bank. Protesters from the anti-capitalist "Blockupy" movement have surrounded the European Central Bank in Frankfurt. More people are coming in from Spain, Italy and other countries to join the protect of the European Central Bank which has been demanding counterproductive austerity measures.

As Fracktivists Protest, Resist, Sit-In, Frack-Profiteers Push Forward in Illinois

The Illinois House and Senate are set to adjourn for the year on May 31 and the Hydraulic Fracturing Regulation Act will likelyreceive a full floor vote by adjournment. The regulatory bill has 59 House co-sponsors and eight Senate co-sponsors. Democratic Party Gov. Pat Quinn said he will sign the bill when it arrives on his desk. With the deadline looming rapidly, anti-fracking activists - or "fracktivists" - have been protesting, sitting in, testifying in committee hearings and committing acts of non-violent civil disobedience daily at the Illinois State Capitol in Springfield. Two days before that deadline, the Associated Press reported that records from the state Department of Natural Resources indicate fracking already has begun in Illinois' New Albany Shale Basin.
