Patricia Okoumou To Be Sentenced On March 19, 2019 For Statue Of Liberty Protest

At the height of the outrage against the U.S. government's separation of migrant children at the border, Patricia Okoumou climbed the Statue of Liberty on July 4, 2018. She said, “When I climbed the Statue of Liberty, I wanted to express the urgency of stopping our government’s reprehensible and inhumane treatment of migrant children ... I wanted no one to forget that children have been forced into cages and that we must do everything we can to stop the imprisonment of children ... Parents are torn apart with grief and very little has been done to unite the families.”

ICE Deports Two Hunger Strikers Detained In El Paso

Two of the #ElPaso9 hunger strikers were deported on Thursday, February 28th from the El Paso, TX Processing Center (EPPC). The two deported were among the Sikh men seeking asylum who have been on hunger strike, some for over 60 days. The “El Paso 9” have been subject to intermittent and involuntary force-feeding and solitary confinement since January. The men were on hunger strike to protest the ongoing delay in hearing their cases and verbal and physical abuse by the guards. Some of the men are still on hunger strike.

UN: US Force-Feeding Immigrants May Breach Torture Agreement

The United States could be violating the U.N. Convention Against Torture by force-feeding immigrant detainees on a hunger strike inside an El Paso detention facility, the United Nations human rights office said Thursday. The Geneva-based Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is concerned that force-feeding could constitute “ill treatment” that goes against the convention, which the United States ratified in 1994, spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told The Associated Press. The U.N.’s statement echoes concerns raised by 14 Democratic lawmakers who sent a letter to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday...

Denver Teachers: We Won’t Let H.R. Break Our Strike by Threatening Our Immigrant Colleagues

It has come to our attention that the Denver Public Schools Human Resources department sent an email letter to school administrators that threatened to report teachers on visas to immigration officials if they chose to participate in the legal strike that 93 percent of Denver Classroom Teachers Association members voted to support. DPS’s action has lasting consequences on the greater community and is in direct violation of the 2017 Board Resolution that guarantees “safe and welcoming schools.” How can we guarantee the safety of these students when we are actively persecuting members of the community for their immigration status? Today, less than 24 hours after hearing of this threatening email, our own students were in disbelief that the school district entrusted with educating them could send such an intimidating message to educators.

A Dead Child On Christmas Eve

We’re talking about the safety and security of minors who are unable to fend for themselves. Republicans certainly can be opposed to undocumented migration and still not turn their backs on children. And Democrats can insist that money be appropriated to ensure the safety and physical wellbeing of these same children without being accused of being “weak on illegal immigration.” Forget the politics. We can’t lose our humanity.

It’s Never ‘Just the Immigrants’

The debasement of public discourse on immigration policy; the wink-and-nudge of encouragement offered to the most sinister fringes of the American far-right; or the aggravation of racial animosity against people of color in the United States. Yet this country’s history also points to other, often overlooked tendencies. Politically, institutionally, and legally, the targeting of immigrants has almost always figured prominently in wider attacks on labor movements and civil liberties. To a large and alarming extent, it’s the same story today.

The Migration World Pact: Wishes And Realities

The Global Compact for Migration is a document that isn’t actually legally binding. Its objective is to promote models of agreements between different countries or regional organizations. Although this isn’t necessarily a negative thing per se, when we examine the specific treaty provisions we observe some of its true objectives. The approach is completely securitarian since it promotes a border management system that criminalizes everyone who dares to cross it, advocating for a selective migration model. That means that the States can pick who are welcomed in their countries to satisfy the interests of the market.

International Migrant Day, Solidarity And Struggle

Today, December 18th, the world celebrates International Migrants Day, and SOA Watch wants to express, above all, our solidarity with and love for all people who are forced to flee their countries of origin. According to the latest UNHCR report, "Global Trends: Forced Displacement 2017", 68.5 million people worldwide have been forced to leave their homes due to wars, famines, and other political conflicts -- 24.4 million of these people have received refugee status in the countries of destination. It is important to note that these figures do not reflect the magnitude of the horror that those who are forced from their homeland face.

When Peaceful Protest Is Met With Geared Up Violence At The Border

On Monday, Dec 10th, 2018, the Poor People’s Campaign, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), and multiple faith leaders from all walks of life assembled at the border in a peaceful protest to support migrants. During the protest, border patrol stood in a militarized line to push protesters back from the small protected space by the border on the US side. A guard walked up and down yelling into a blow horn warning protesters to move back or they would be arrested. Protesters, who took to their knees and refused to move, were pushed to the ground forcibly...

Federal Courthouse Shut Down Against ICE

On Friday, November 30, members of the Connecticut immigrant rights activist community successfully shut down the federal courthouse in Hartford in protest of the ongoing injustices suffered by Nelson Pinos, his family, and all victims of ICE terror. Nelson, originally from Ecuador, has lived in Connecticut for over twenty years, where he has formed a family, a home, a career, and found community. In November of 2017, he entered into First & Summerfield Congregational Church in New Haven, seeking sanctuary there as a direct refute of the state’s order for his deportation.

Immigrants Make Journey For Justice

After six weeks of traveling across the United States, the TPS Journey 4 Justice bus arrived in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, Sept. 25. The bus carried more than 50 immigrants with Temporary Protected Status (TPS), their family members, and other civil rights leaders who are crossing the country over 12 weeks to mobilize communities to protect the life-saving immigration program.  TPS allows foreign nationals to remain in the U.S. if war, natural disaster, or some other catastrophe in their country of origin prevents their safe return. Most TPS holders have lived in the U.S. for years, often decades, and have become vital parts of our communities.

Bank of America Freezing Accounts Of Suspected Non-Citizens

In recent months, the Trump administration has launched an unprecedented assault on the immigrant community, highlighted by a “zero tolerance” policy that has left as many as 500 children separated from their parents. But it’s not just the federal government that’s persecuting this vulnerable group. As the Miami Herald reports, Bank of America is freezing the account of customers whose U.S. citizenship it deems suspect.

FANG Shuts Down ICE, Continues Campaign Of Escalation

Last Monday FANG deployed multiple blockades in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts that shut down all entrances to the Bristol County Jail and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. At the facility’s main entrance, climbers scaled two 24 foot tripods, while at the second entrance, two people locked into a concrete barricade, with one of them also locking their neck to the gate. The Bristol County Sheriff’s officers responded with violence. They pulled apart and tore down both tripods causing the climbers to fall and slam into the pavement. The sheriffs then used pain compliance on Sherrie, an indigenous woman of color and a co-founder of FANG, in an unsuccessful attempt to get them to release from their lockbox.

US Military Ordered To Host Massive Immigrant Concentration Camps

This isn’t the first time in US history that facilities are being constructed and used to imprison large numbers of a persecuted minority in a relatively small area with inadequate facilities (the definition of a concentration camp). Previous examples of this are now infamous, such as the so-called Japanese internment camps. We’re now on the brink of adding a new chapter to this dark history. Military officials, in response to pressured deadlines from the White House, have stated that these camps can begin to be operational by mid-August.

Detaining Immigrant Children – A Billion-Dollar Industry

Detaining immigrant children has become big business in the United States. Now reaching nearly a billion dollars, the industry, which provides “shelters, foster care, and other child welfare services for detained unaccompanied and separated children,” rose from $74.5 million to $958 million is just 10 years, the Associated Press reported. With more than 11,800 children in the government’s custody, officials say they will be reviewing a new round of proposals. There are currently 90 facilities across 15 states – Arizona, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia and Washington – where children are “being held while their parents await immigration proceedings or, if the children arrived unaccompanied, are reviewed for possible asylum themselves.”
