U.N. Urged To Ban Nuke Strikes Against Cities

Civil society groups are urging the U.N. General Assembly to pass a resolution declaring nuclear strikes on cities to be a clear-cut violation of international humanitarian law. At the Dec. 8-9 Vienna Conference on the Humanitarian Impact of Nuclear Weapons, supporters of the proposed resolution argued that after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it is undeniable that the explosion of a nuclear weapon on a populated area would engender destruction beyond acceptable human limits. “The maximalist demand of a complete ban on weapons, and the 'incremental steps' towards disarmament are both jammed. Will advancing IHL help both of these processes?" -- Jonathan Granoff

2015: Organizing Global Action To End Nuclear Era

On the heels of the September 21 People’s Climate March, a broad international network of NGOs is marking the first United Nations-led International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons by announcing plans for a major mobilization in the run-up to the critically important Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference. The NPT Review will be held at UN headquarters in New York City in April and May 2015. Quoting the Call to Action, which was released today (see below), Dr. Joseph Gerson of the American Friends Service Committee and a co-convener of the network said that “A nuclear weapon-free world can and must be achieved.” He continued, “The dangers of nuclear war didn’t disappear with the end of the Cold War."

International Day To Eliminate Nuclear Weapons, As Obama Expands Them

The New York Times reports that the Obama administration is planning a massive increase in nuclear arms spending: A sprawling new plant here in a former soybean field makes the mechanical guts of America’s atomic warheads. Bigger than the Pentagon, full of futuristic gear and thousands of workers, the plant, dedicated last month, modernizes the aging weapons that the United States can fire from missiles, bombers and submarines. It is part of a nationwide wave of atomic revitalization that includes plans for a new generation of weapon carriers. A recent federal study put the collective price tag, over the next three decades, at up to a trillion dollars. This expansion comes under a president who campaigned for “a nuclear-free world” and made disarmament a main goal of American defense policy. Instead, because of political deals and geopolitical crises, the Obama administration is engaging in extensive atomic rebuilding while getting only modest arms reductions in return.

“Badhoneywell” Makes Its Nationwide Debut

The US government's complicity in the Israeli siege of Gaza is no secret. Israel has the eleventh largest military in the world, which is in large part due to US military aid of over $3 billion annually. What remains in the shadows, however, is the alarming extent to which United States corporations profit from the Israeli war machine. A prime example is Honeywell International Inc. Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade, a Canadian group, has documented a long-lasting and profitable economic relationship between Honeywell and the Israeli military, with many of their collaborations traceable directly to war crimes committed by the IDF. The 2010 attack in the waters outside Gaza against the "Freedom Flotilla," in which 9 activists were killed in an attempt to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza through the Israeli blockade, was perpetrated by a Sa'ar V Corvette, built by another US company, Northrop-Grumman. Yet that ship was armed by Honeywell-built torpedoes. This relationship, in which Honeywell profits from some component of weapons production without appearing to be prominently involved, appears frequently. Take Israel's M270 MLRS missile system, produced by Lockheed Martin and Israeli Military Industries (IMI). Honeywell produces Jet Reaction Control and Trajectory Correction Systems critical to the M270, which it notes can be "retrofitted into unguided artillery rockets for improved precision." In the same promotional flier, the company describes its Jet Reaction Controls as providing "unmatched agility, maneuverability, and end-game lethality to tactical missiles and precision-guided munitions."

Two Year Anniversary of Transform Now Plowshares Action

When I took Megan's first call from jail and heard her elation that they had gotten to exactly where they wanted and done all they had planned, it was clear the blessings of God or the universe had again supported the work of disarmament, as so often has happened with plowshares actions. This was evident too in the fact that they were found by a long-employed guard with prior experience with peace activists at Rocky Flats, so he knew that he faced no physical threat and did not use violence. The video of that meeting we later saw in court was touching; MGM bowing and holding out their hands in friendship, offering bread and flowers, and the guard's calm demeanor in response. What a shame that plant management fired him for doing his job so well. His union continues to support his claim of wrongful dismissal, as well they should. So then the media frenzy began. . .

Sister Megan Writes From Prison, Halfway To ‘Tipping Consciousness’

YOU are a celebration of the Universe, calling forth what we are meant to be about - to show how a spiritual being (all of Creation) expands, complexifies into being more fully human (or what we are meant to be). YOU gift all beings through your current missionary work. Many are becoming aware - that creates a field - actually, I think of it more as 'Mystical Body of Christ' on Earth. Mystics calling to mystics, strengthening that field, in order to contribute to the greater whole. Ken Wilbur says that 10% is needed to 'tip the consciousness.' We are at 5%, he says. Think how you contribute to that mystical margin. YOUR graciousness, YOUR wisdom, YOUR gentle com-passion are the great teachers.

Summer Activities In Northwest To Abolish Nukes

Well, that's all for now. As you can see Ground Zero people are at it, both in front of and behind the scenes. Even though I have nothing new to share on it today, the legal effort against the Bangor Second Explosives Handling Wharf continues. And so does the rest of the work. You can keep in touch with all of it at both our website at gzcenter.org and our Facebook page (Ground Zero Center for Nonviolent Action). Send your questions to either me at gznonviolencenews@gmail.com or to info@gzcenter.org. Above all, please get involved in whatever way you are able. Scrapping Trident and abolishing all nuclear weapons is not something politicians will do without a huge groundswell of citizen involvement. So please share our message and work far and wide. We're all in this together, and together we CAN make a difference!!!

New Campaign For A Treaty To Ban Nuclear Weapons Gains Momentum

Achieving a ban treaty negotiated without the nuclear weapons states would give us a cudgel to hold them to their bargain to negotiate for the total elimination of nuclear weapons in a reasonable time by shaming them for not only failing to honor the NPT but for totally undermining their “good faith” promise for nuclear disarmament. They continue to test and build new bombs, manufacturing facilities, and delivery systems while Mother Earth is assaulted with a whole succession of so-called “sub-critical” tests, as these outlaw states continue to blow up plutonium underground at the Nevada and Novaya Zemlya test sites. The P-5’s insistence on a “step by step” process, supported by some of the nuclear “umbrella states”, rather than the negotiation of a legal ban demonstrates their breathtaking hypocrisy as they are not only modernizing and replacing their arsenals, they are actually spreading nuclear bomb factories around the world in the form of nuclear reactors for commercial gain, even ”sharing” this lethal technology with India, a non-NPT party, an illegal practice in violation of the NPT prohibition against sharing nuclear technology with states that failed to join the treaty.

Arrest Of ‘Happy’ Dancers In Iran

Welcome to The Real News Network. I'm Paul Jay.The six Iranian youth who danced in a YouTube video to the song by Pharrell Williams "Happy", who were arrested by Iranian authorities, have now been released. But the director is still being held in custody, according to news agency reports. Well, what is all this about? Why are these six kids arrested? They certainly didn't expect to be arrested, or one thinks they wouldn't have made this YouTube video. So there's something going on within the Iranian regime, or some force within it decided to make a symbol of these kids. Here's a little bit of the video that has caused all the commotion. [video clip plays] Okay. Now joining us to try to unpack the motive behind the arrests of these young people is Trita Parsi. Trita is founder and president of the National Iranian American Council. He is an author. His books include A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama's Diplomacy with Iran and Treacherous Alliance: The Secret Dealings of Israel, Iran, and the U.S. Thanks very much for joining us, Trita.

Taking Nuclear Weapons To Court

Nuclear weapons remain the most urgent threat confronting humanity. So long as they exist, there is the very real chance they will be used by accident, miscalculation or design. These weapons threaten everyone and everything we love and treasure. They are fearsome destructive devices that kill indiscriminately and cause unnecessary suffering. No man, woman or child is safe from the fury of these weapons, now or in the future. Nor is any country safe from them, no matter how powerful or how much it threatens nuclear retaliation. Given the extreme dangers of nuclear weapons, we might ask: why isn’t more being done to eliminate them? There has been talk and promises, but little action by the nine nuclear-armed nations – United States, Russia, United Kingdom, France, China, Israel, India, Pakistan and North Korea. All nine countries are modernizing their nuclear arsenals. One small Pacific nation, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, has decided to take legal action against the nine nuclear-armed countries, which are threatening our common future. As Tony de Brum, Foreign Minister of the Marshall Islands, points out, “The continued existence of nuclear weapons and the terrible risk they pose to the world threatens us all.”

Open Letter To President Obama: Time To Disarm

Dear President Obama, During the closing session of the Nuclear Security Summit in The Hague on March 25, 2014, you cited a number of concrete measures to secure highly-enriched uranium and plutonium and strengthen the nuclear nonproliferation regime that have been implemented as a result of the three Nuclear Security Summits, concluding: “So what’s been valuable about this summit is that it has not just been talk, it’s been action.” Would that you would apply the same standard to nuclear disarmament! On April 5, 2009 in Prague, you gave millions of people around the world new hope when you declared: “So today, I state clearly and with conviction America’s commitment to seek the peace and security of a world without nuclear weapons.” Bolstered by that hope, over the past three years, there has been a new round of nuclear disarmament initiatives by governments not possessing nuclear weapons, both within and outside the United Nations.

David vs. Goliath: The Nuclear Zero Lawsuits

Historic lawsuits were filed Thursday against the U.S. and the 8 other Nuclear Weapons States (NWS) of the world to meet their treaty obligations to disarm by the courageous tiny island nation Republic of the Marshall Islands. Since 1970, the Nuclear Non‐Proliferation Treaty (NPT) has obligated nations to negotiate in good faith for complete nuclear disarmament—a world without nuclear weapons. Forty‐four years later, with no negotiations in sight, the world has become a more dangerous place with stockpiles of over 17,000 nuclear weapons. Four more nations now have nuclear weapons, and the original five continue to invest in and modernize their nuclear forces with expenditures expected to be in excess of 1 Trillion dollars over the next 10 years. But one small nation has stood up to say “enough is enough.”

Livermore Lab Arrests 40 At Good Friday Anti-Nuke Protest

The Alameda County Sheriff's Department, California Highway Patrol and Livermore Police Department assisted in the arrests. According to lab officials, the west gate was closed for two hours. The annual Good Friday protest is organized by the Ecumenical Peace Institute of Berkeley and the Livermore Conversion Project in Oakland. It has been held for about the past 30 years. "The message of today's event is that we've got to stop devoting our valuable resources, our energy, our money, and our intelligence in the service of killing people, and turn it toward creating things that give life," said Ecumenical Peace Institute program coordinator Carolyn Scarr, who was among those arrested. At the gathering, keynote speaker Kathy Kelly, co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Nonviolence, talked about the impacts of military intervention in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Ten Years Later Israeli Nuclear Arms Whistleblower Still Not Free

Ten years ago, on April 21, 2004, several hundred of us from around the world waited with great anticipation outside the gates of Israel’s Ashkelon Prison, holding up signs saying “Thank you, Mordechai Vanunu: Peace Hero, Nuclear Whistle-blower”. After many years of campaigning for his freedom, the day had finally arrived: Mordechai Vanunu would walk out of the prison where he had spent each day of his 18 year sentence (12 of those years in solitary confinement) for blowing the whistle on Israel’s then secret nuclear arsenal. We were there to welcome him to freedom. Our excitement had been somewhat dimmed a couple of days earlier, when Israel announced a list of oppressive and unjust restrictions on the soon-to-be-released whistle-blower. These restrictions continue to this day, having been renewed each April: Mordechai Vanunu remains under restrictions which require him to report and gain approval for any change in residence, to avoid diplomatic missions, to not speak to foreign nationals and which prevent him from leaving Israel, a thing Mordechai has wished to do ever since his release from prison.

The Terrorist Nun Who Committed Crimes Of Peace

The Catholic Agitator has published a special edition about Sister Megan Rice, the 83 year old nun, who is currently serving time in prison for the actions that she and other Ploughshares Activists, Michael Walli and Gregory Boertje-Obed took to stop nuclear weapons. They splashed blood against the walls, put up banners and beat hammers “into plowshares” — a biblical reference to Isaiah 2:4, “They shall beat swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.” Thee Catholic Agitator describes Sister Rice as "The Terrorist Nun" who serves in prison for "crimes of peace." Breaking into a sensitive nuclear facility to stage a protest, the three activists were prepared for the worst. “We were very aware that we could have died,” Rice said. They were not killed but found themselves incarcerated.
