Sunoco Gets Assist From Sheriff, Judge In Clear-Cut For Pipeline

By Anne Meador for DC Media Group - Born in Budapest, 85-year-old Steven Gerhart fled to the United States in 1957 after surviving Europe’s most brutal regimes. His adopted country was undoubtedly a refuge from injustices and cruelties suffered under the Nazi occupation of Hungary, the Communist takeover and the Soviet crackdown on rebellion. In turn, Gerhart with his wife Ellen created a sanctuary for wildlife with the purchase of land in Pennsylvania in 1982. Now their property—a heavily forested hillside of century-old trees—is in the way of a gas company’s profitable enterprise.

Three Arrested As Sunoco Logistics Clears Forest In Huntingdon

By Coryn Wolk for Clean Air - Huntingdon, PA - Backed by Huntingdon County sheriff’s deputies, Sunoco Logistics Partners’ chainsaws cut a swath through forest that the Gerhart family had protected for decades, clearing the way for the Mariner East 2 pipeline. By March 30 the 3-acre right-of-way was almost entirely cleared, aside from two trees occupied by protesters on platforms high above the ground and some adjacent trees. One of the tree-sitters is Elise Gerhart, whose mother, property owner Ellen Gerhart, was arrested along with two others.

Pennsylvania Supreme Court Hears Arguments Over Fracking Favoritism

By Candy Woodall for Penn Live - There are more than 3 million Pennsylvanians who rely on private wells for their drinking water, and many of them live in the rural areas of the state where oil and gas drilling takes place. Hundreds of contamination cases were reported after spills, and they've only affected private water sources, according to attorney John Smith. The state's attorney, Sean Concannon, argued that the state regulates public water sources, not private wells, and that's why the act is written that way. DEP doesn't know where all the private wells are and couldn't notify everyone, he said.

Independent Journalists Put Spotlight On FERC

By Faith Meckley for Faith Meckley - I traveled to New Milford, Pennsylvania on March 3 to meet a family who was in the process of losing the quiet woodlands on land they have owned for three generations. After refusing to cut a deal for their property with the company building the Constitution Pipeline, the company used eminent domain to forcibly take the land and begin cutting down trees. The Constitution Pipeline was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, an agency responsible for reviewing and approving liquefied natural gas terminals, interstate natural gas pipelines, and hydropower projects.

A Hollow Victory For Williams Partners

Ted Glick for Ted Glick - The Constitution Pipeline Company, aka Williams Partners, came in force onto the Holleran family land in New Milford, Pa. yesterday. Federal marshals armed with assault rifles accompanied workers armed with chain saws across the open field up to where the woods began. Talk about overkill. Talk about exposing the ugly truth of how things really work in the gas industry. Supporters of the Hollerans had painted “freedom flags” in red, white and blue onto about 14 trees right at the edge of the field.

Refusing To Settle, Dimock Families Take Fracking Giant To Court

By Lauren McCauley for Common Dreams - Fracking is on trial in Pennsylvania this week as two families, who refused to settle in their pursuit of justice, have launched a court battle against Cabot Oil & Gas Corp. Neighbors Scott Ely and his wife, Monica Marta-Ely, and Ray and Victoria Hubert are accusing the fossil fuel giant of groundwater contamination, resulting in the loss of their drinking water supply. Both families live in the town of Dimock, which has become the cornerstone in the fight against fracking and was featured in the 2010 documentary Gasland.

Hearing Held To Remove Pro Bono Lawyer For Innocent Lifer

By Mark Lance for Free Corey Walker - The OAG’s action to get long-time political activist and attorney Rachel Wolkenstein out of this case is retaliation against the efforts of Corey Walker to overturn his frame-up murder conviction. Since Wolkenstein began working with Walker pro bono in May 2014, first helping with investigation and his pro sepetitions and then as his attorney pro hac vice, Corey Walker filed three sets of legal papers. Each time yet more evidence was given showing his conviction was the result of extensive police and prosecution misconduct.

Judge Clears Way For Trees To Be Cut Down For Pipeline

By Clay Lepard for 16 WNEP - SCRANTON -- A company was given the approval by a federal judge to cut down dozens of maple trees in Susquehanna County so a new gas pipeline could be built. But several families have protested because they are trying to protect the trees and their maple syrup business. The standoff led to a showdown Friday in federal court. Natural gas company Williams is trying to put in a pipeline through Susquehanna County to link natural gas to New York and New England customers.

Farm Defended Against Pipeline Tree Cutters

By John Zangas for DC Media Group - Clear-cutting of trees on a Pennsylvania family farm for the Constitution Pipeline was held off another day by successful negotiations between property owners and pipeline company representatives. The discussion was backed up by a large group of pipeline opponents, who stood ready to block the incursion of tree cutters. Dozens of people have traveled long distances to join hands on the Zeffer-Holleran property near New Milford, PA and defend five acres of old-growth trees in the path of the 125-mile-long Constitution Pipeline. The conflict escalated early on Wednesday when twenty loggers attempted to begin cutting trees.

Inspiring Fossil Fuel Resistance Action In Northeast Pennsylvania

By Staff of Ted Glick - Very possibly as early as tomorrow, chain-saw-armed tree cutters hired by Williams Partners, a powerful pipeline-building corporation for the gas and oil industry, will try to cut down sugar maple trees on the property of Maryann Zeffer, Cathy and Megan Holleran and their family. For 65 years they have lived on this land, and for the last ten or so they have been producing delicious, pure, Pennsylvania maple syrup from those trees. This destruction won’t happen without a big fight.

Pennsylvania Fracking Water Contamination Higher Than Reported

By Laurel Peltier for Baltimore Fishbowl. Contrary to the EPA fracking study’s conclusion, the prevalence of drinking water contamination appears to be much higher than previously reported. Accurate drinking water complaint data is vital to know as Maryland drafts new fracking regulations to potentially welcome the natural gas industry into Western Maryland in 2017. Joshua Pribanic, Public Herald’s Editor-in-Chief adds, “At this point, there is no way to find out what happened with thousands of fracking water complaints except to go door-to-door and ask what happened with a complainant’s drinking water. In many cases you’ll find rooms stuffed with bottled water. Or, you’ll find in the basement an industry-supplied reverse osmosis system or a methane mitigation system. The true extent of water contamination has been concealed.

18 Cities In Pennsylvania Report Higher Levels Of Lead Than Flint

By Sarah Frostenson for Vox - The lead poisoning crisis in Flint, Michigan, was a surprise, an emergency that occurred after the city switched to a new, cheaper water source. But there are at least six cities in the United States where we should, in theory, have really good data on lead exposure. In fiscal year 2014, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spent almost $2 million as part of a three-year funding commitment to help some of the biggest cities in the country monitor lead exposure. I spent the past week looking at these cities, and came away with three main findings.

Infrastructure ‪Pipeline Task Force‬ Meeting Shut Down

By Beyond Extreme Energy. Residents impacted by fracked gas infrastructure from across Pennsylvania came together today to shut down the final meeting of Governor Wolf’s Infrastructure Task Force. Exactly one year after members of frontline communities from across the state disrupted Governor Wolf’s inauguration to demand an end to fracking, Pennsylvanians again convened in Harrisburg to demand a stop to the buildout of fracked gas infrastructure. “My friends and neighbors in Butler County have already been harmed by the reckless practices of the gas industry and the enablers in Pennsylvania’s government. This rubber stamping farce has done nothing but increase the likelihood that the destruction will continue,” said Michael Bagdes-Canning.

Farms Not Fracking At Pennsylvania Farm Show

By Staff of Buck Local News - The Spence family is one of many traveling to Harrisburg for a “Farms, Not Fracking” rally at the opening of the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Saturday, January 9 in Harrisburg. Farmers from across the state, joined by supporters such as the Spences, will converge to bring attention to the negative impact fracking is having on the $2.35 billion a year agriculture industry in Pennsylvania. The Farms Not Fracking rally is being organized by Pennsylvanians Against Fracking, a statewide coalition working to stop fracking.

7 Days till Shutdown: Homeless Students Need Same Internet Access

By Staff of Voqal - When families with students enrolled at Central Pennsylvania Digital Learning Foundation can’t afford Internet access, the cyber school provides affordable solutions through Mobile Citizen. According to Technology Coordinator Micheal Tambellini, the number of families requiring connectivity assistance is growing. “We have a small percentage of homeless students enrolled today, and unfortunately that number seems to be increasing,” he said. “To keep up with the curriculum, they need the same Internet access as all of our other cyber students.”
