July 4 Reflection: Letter to Town Council on Use of Paramilitary Force

The decision to use this type of militarized police team was made, according to Police Chief Blue, because “known anarchists” were residing in the building, and they were circulating “literature.” This hardly seems cause for 25 policemen armed with assault rifles to attack the occupiers. Even journalists, doing their job, were detained, and thus prevented from fully exposing the police’s actions. As a military veteran said at the Town Council meeting, the police did not attempt to conduct an undercover survey of the building, which was open to anyone, to determine the level of danger before arriving with dangerous, automatic weapons and riot gear. However, Mr. Mayor, you claimed otherwise, that “…there was no way of knowing exactly what [the police] were going to be met with inside [the Yates building].”

Video: Police Attack Thousands of Turkish Protesters

Turkish riot police have fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse about 3,000 demonstrators who tried to enter a park adjacent to Istanbul's Taksim Square, the heart of recent protests against the government of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The Taksim Solidarity Platform, made up of a combination of political groups, had called for a march on Saturday to enter the sealed off Gezi park, but the governor of Istanbul warned that any such gathering would be confronted by the police. "Parks are not places for protests. They must serve as a place of calm and tranquility for all people," Istanbul governor Huseyin Avni Mutlu said.

300 Men March in Baltimore & Demand: “Stop the Violence!”

The 300 Men March against violence was held on Friday night, July 5, 2013, in Baltimore. With the temperature striking close to 90 degrees, approximately 500 men from Baltimore City and beyond paraded along North Avenue to help deter “violent crime” in the city. I caught up with the marchers at North Avenue and Charles Street--close to the finish line for the event. Photos and videos included. Police Using ‘Seatbelt Checkpoints’ To Search Cars Without Warrants

The Beckley, West Virginia Police Department set up a "seatbelt checkpoint," which resulted in several drug arrests on July 2. The Beckley police claimed they did the checkpoint to inform residents and raise awareness of a new seatbelt law that goes into effect on July 9. However, police brought K-9 drug-sniffing dogs to the checkpoints, which were not needed for seatbelt education. According to The Register-Herald, police searched cars during the seatbelt checks and made five drug arrests. Officers seized 96 grams of marijuana, crack cocaine and $1,500. Police also issued 25 traffic citations.

The State of Dissent in America: Flex Your Rights

As we have seen, the security state will go to great lengths to suppress real dissent. It will use infiltration, intimidation, spying, the courts and even violence to stop those who stand up for our rights and for truth. Through the mass media, the security state will use distraction and personal attacks to keep the focus off of the real issues. At a time like this, solidarity is important. There is strength in unity. It will take a mass movement in the US to stop policies that harm people and the planet, further entrench corporate power and invade every aspect of our lives. We see this currently in countries like Turkey, Brazil and Egypt. In Brazil, the protests are actually working to force concessions by the government, partly because they have a more functional democracy.

Million Dollar Settlement for Police Abuse in Oakland

During the demonstration, protesters said, police funneled them onto a side street, where officers surrounded them and announced they were under arrest. "We were never given a warning or a chance to leave," Dan Spalding, a legal observer with the National Lawyers Guild who was present at the march, said in a statement Monday. "We were handcuffed and left sitting on the street and then in buses for a total of about eight hours without access to a bathroom. People urinated in their pants as we sat in the hot, crowded bus." After the demonstrators were taken off the bus, they were crowded overnight into Alameda County Sheriff's Department temporary holding cells, with neither beds nor blankets. Two of the 152 people were charged. The others were released without charges the following day.

Chicago’s South Side Rises Up Against Gun Violence

Fr. Michael Pfleger — St. Sabina’s pastor who has been actively challenging the violence, and the poverty and racism that spawns it, for decades — put it this way at the opening rally: “We cannot wait for law enforcement or for government. We must run our homes. We must run our neighborhoods. We must occupy the streets. We must come out of our houses, out of our churches, out of our businesses, and be the presence in our communities. ” He continued, “We must be the eyes and ears of the community — to let our children know that we are watching over you and we will protect you. We are 911. We are the blue lights. We’re the Interrupters. We are in charge of the community… Occupy the streets. We must reach out to our brothers in the community. Stop demonizing them!

FBI Sued Over Secretive Facial Recognition Program

Soon the FBI will be done building a database containing the photographs, fingerprints and other biometric data for millions of Americans, but the agency has been far from forthcoming with the details. A new lawsuit filed this week aims to change that. The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a non-profit digital rights group based out of California, sued the United States Department of Justice this week for failing to comply with multiple Freedom of Information Act requests filed last year by the EFF. “Governmental use of face recognition — and the potential for misuse — raises many privacy concerns,” the EFF says in the lawsuit. Further, “The FBI has also stated in a public presentation given at a national biometrics conference that it wants to use its facial recognition system to 'identify unknown persons of interest from images' and 'identify subjects in public datasets,'” the complaint continues. “In the same presentation, the FBI included a graphic image that implied the Bureau wanted to use facial recognition to be able to track people from one political rally to another.”

Pepper Spray, Rubber Bullets and IRS Questionnaires

Pepper spray, rubber bullets or an IRS questionnaire - which of these poses the greatest threat to your political speech? If the recent brouhaha over the IRS's singling out of Tea Party groups and the lack of a similar uproar over the systematic use of state violence against the Occupy movement is any indication, only the IRS questionnaire poses any threat to our democracy. It may seem rather bizarre, but in our current political and media climate, Karl Rove and his well-monied friends are potential victims of a nefarious political police and Occupiers are just a public nuisance.

Turkish Security Forces Fire on Kurdish Protesters, One Dead, 11 Injured

Turkish security forces killed one person and wounded six on Friday when they fired on a group protesting against the construction of a new gendarmerie outpost in Kurdish-dominated southeastern Turkey, officials said. The shooting, which occurred in the village of Kayacik in the Lice district of Diyarbakir province, was likely to stoke tension among the weekend marchers, although leaders stressed the rallies would be peaceful. Diyarbakir Governor Cahit Kirac said around 200 protesters marched on Friday onto the construction site where the outpost was being built to replace an existing one, with some throwing petrol bombs and setting fire to workers’ tents. “At this point, the soldiers fired warning shots and a riot broke out. There were then reports of one person being killed and six people being wounded, two of them seriously. These reports are not confirmed, we are investigating,” Kirac said.

NYC Vote to Curb Stop-and-Frisk Is Another Win for Civil Rights

New York City Council passed two bills designed to guarantee safety and respect for all New Yorkers. The measures were championed by Communities United for Police Reform, a broad coalition of city groups, and will strengthen the existing ban on police profiling and establish independent oversight of the city's police department. The move reflects a growing alarm over NYPD policies and practices that violate the rights of thousands of New Yorkers and undermine police-community relationships – practices such as the discriminatory use of stop-and-frisk that waste valuable public dollars, while producing no measurable impact on public safety.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – The Paradox of Power

On Wednesday morning, attorney Lynne Stewart’s compassionate release from prison was denied. Stewart is suffering from breast cancer. Her husband, Ralph Poynter, stood vigil in DC to push for a decision, and then the decision came, with a result they did not want to hear. Stewart should not be in prison at all for her act of assisting her client with a press statement, but she continues to serve a 10 year sentence. By her grace and strength Stewart turned a seemingly devastating decision into a victory.

Police Spies Out of Lives

Each of these courageous women is attempting to rebuild her life after what has been described as “the gravest possible interferences” with her private life. Their stories are shared here not to elicit just your sympathy, but to increase your understanding; not to provoke interest in their personal details, but to request your solidarity. They have described what happened to them not to suggest that they are the only victims, but to ensure there are no more victims. We ask you to treat their accounts with respect, and to honour these women’s bravery and dignity.

Support Health Professionals’ Right to Treat Protesters in Turkey

Police raided the makeshift infirmaries, confiscated all safety and health supplies and arrested three physicians. In response, doctors went on strike and marched through the streets in solidarity with their colleagues. They call on the international community to demand that the Turkish Government respect their right to medical neutrality, to treat all who need care no matter who they are or why they are injured and to respect their oath to protect the privacy and best interests of their patients. The World Medical Association released a letter of support. Physicians in the US also send their support and call on others to join them.

When Will The Police Learn? Pepper Spray Builds Protests

Pepper spray has replaced the attack dogs of the Civil Rights Movement. Today, as people challenge corrupt government that is working on behalf of the wealthy and not the people; an unfair economy the sends wealth to the top while most people struggle to get by, the image of government abuse of citizens has become pepper spray. The use of the spray has produced consistent results -- iconic photographs and videos that lead sympathy for protesters, criticism of police and a bigger movement. In every incident, it has been nonviolent protesters -- and their nonviolence is critical to the growth of the movement -- attacked by police without justification.
