Popular Resistance Newsletter – Vibrant Movement For Green Energy Economy

Impressive environmental protests have been organized by a wide range people calling for an end to radical energy and a transformation to a clean energy economy. Radical energy includes fuel derived from extreme extraction methods like tar sands, hydrofracking and off-shore drilling for oil or methane gas and mountain top removal for coal. This is costly energy, not only in dollars but in its impact on the environment; and it is causing an impressive growth in people taking action to protect the planet. Rather than building the upgraded energy infrastructure we need to reduce wasted energy and to efficiently store and transport energy from the sun and wind, the United States has embarked on building pipelines as well as relying on trains to carry oil and gas.

Occupy’s Puppets: Tweaking the Noses of the Trans-Pacific Partnership

This coming September 17 in NYC’s famous Times Square on the second birthday of Occupy Wall Street, Occupier/Activist performers will take on the infamous TPP in a Star Wars-themed protest called Money Warz. The Trans-Pacific Partnership will be portrayed as the “TPP Death Star” – a 15-foot-tall replica of a toilet paper roll (get it – TPP?). The supporting cast for this “Money Warz” spectacle will feature over 200 performers, videographers, livestreamers and citizen media folk. They will appear at public-shaming rallies to be held at select corporate headquarters, banks congressional offices, and on Wall Street itself. That is, if they can get past the barricades manned by NYC’s Finest who serve to separate the 1% from the 99%.

VIDEO: Pharma Giant Pfizer To Profit From TPP

But Pfizer giant want more. It’s not enough to have a revolving door between the industry and regulators, or that tax payers already pay for 80% of big pharma’s basic research, or that they enjoy tax loopholes you can drive a bonus truck through…no no my friend– Pfizer giant wants to be Godzilla! And to become that they are currently writing a new “trade” agreement for the Obama Administration called The Trans Pacific Partnership. Pfizer giant doesn’t want to be tied down anymore by the Lilliputians and their democracies with their pesky laws. And with the TPP they won’t have to worry about fines from things like health care fraud, off label marketing, or side effect risks…oh no my friend…The TPP will let them profit with impunity. They aren’t giving up those 3 days of sales for anyone or anything!

Obama’s Meeting With Vietnam Shows TPP Bad For Workers

President Obama will meet with Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang today in Washington. The two leaders will discuss the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), a trade and investment agreement that the Obama administration seeks to conclude with Vietnam in October. Human rights and labor organizations have called for suspension of the talks until Vietnam can meet basic labor and human right standards. In its 2012 country report, the U.S. State Department cited Vietnam for serious human rights and labor rights violations. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of International Labor Affairs downgraded Vietnam to a critical list of just four countries that use both child and forced labor in apparel production. Vietnam’s goal in the TPP is to obtain more access to the United States for such products.

Police Detain 14 in Malaysia TPP Round Protest

During the protest, the groups argued that the TPPA would be used as a tool by the US to colonise Malaysia. The protestors, led by Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM), called for the postponement of discussions on the free trade agreement, for the TPPA to be debated in Parliament, as well as for a cost-benefit analysis. ”TPPA is for US corporations and their cronies in Malaysia,” said PSM national chairman Dr Mohd Nasir Hashim. “Without tariffs, the local industries will be destroyed,” he said, and added, “We will become a colony of America.” The protesters chanted “Stop TPPA” and “US, get lost”, while holding placards with the words “TPPA Means Death” and “Patient Before Profit” amid relatively light security.

#TPPTuesdays: Expose the Secret Trans-Pacific Partnership

This is a sharp detour from past free trade agreements for which the text was made public even during the negotiations. So, what are they hiding? Leaked portions of the text and statements by the few Congress members who have seen the text indicate that the TPP is the largest corporate power grab ever. Alan Grayson says that it will undermine US sovereignty and even former US Trade Representative Ron Kirk admits that if people knew what was in it, it could not be signed. That is why groups of concerned people around the country are taking it into their own hands to expose the secret TPP. On #TPPTuesdays, people go to public spaces to hold signs about the TPP and hand out TPP OccuCards.

VIDEO: Oli Garch Explains How TPP Makes Labor Laws Disappear

Most people have never heard of the TPP, your Congressmen has never seen what’s in it, but Walmart has heard of it, seen it, and most importantly, they helped to write it! The Trans Pacific Partnership is the end game for corporate control of the world we live in. I love this! It would allow three “experts” to determine if a national law interferes with Walmart’s expected profit stream. And if it does– then that law either has to go or the taxpayer in that country has to pay Walmart their profit! Finally the world will recognize the correct order of things: profits before people! All those impediments to profit for the corporate citizens– things like minimum wage, child labor laws, worker safety laws? Walmart doesn’t need them, doesn’t want them and pretty soon all those protections for the actual breathing citizens will be Gone Baby Gone!”

We Can Stop the Trans-Pacific Partnership

We are in the midst of an epic battle between the people of the world and transnational corporations. Wealthy governments and corporations are merging in a global system in which private corporations have absolute power over your life. This is a battle the people can win and when we do it will show that we can defeat corporate power on issue after issue. The Obama administration is currently mired in an ambitious project to accomplish both the continuation of the WTO’s agenda and a restructuring of NAFTA in ways that place corporate property rights over protection of people and the environment. Former US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, who now has a lucrative job in the private sector advising transnational corporations for the law firm Gibson Dunn, told one interviewer, if the text were made public negotiators would be walking away from the negotiations because they would be very unpopular.

VIDEO: Peabody Coal Mines TPP for More Profits

Peabody energy is not a domestic US energy company, it’s really an international financial company. It isn’t run by guys that ever mined coal or drilled a well. These aren’t guys that handled shipping or managed sales in those industries, they didn’t invent technologies that operate deep under the earth. No no my friend– these guys came up making deals! And right now these guys are on the inside of the biggest deal for corporate citizens in history…I am talking about the TPP. The Trans Pacific Partnership! It’s the secret plan that gives corporations like Peabody absolute power over your life.

Corporate Interests Prevail in Transatlantic Trade Talks

As European officials gathered in Washington Tuesday for the second day of negotiations over the Transatlantic Free Trade Agreement (TAFTA), critics sounded the alarm over corporate gifts, "dangerous deregulation," and a "bleak" outlook for citizens on both sides of the Atlantic. Many warn that because existing tariffs between the partners already run low, at roughly three percent, the talks will largely focus on eliminating regulatory barriers. "The [US Trade Representative's] office, representing corporate interests, will almost surely push for the lowest common standard," writes Nobel-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz.

The Free-Trade Charade

If negotiators created a genuine free-trade regime that put the public interest first, with the views of ordinary citizens given at least as much weight as those of corporate lobbyists, I might be optimistic that what would emerge would strengthen the economy and improve social well-being. The reality, however, is that we have a managed trade regime that puts corporate interests first, and a process of negotiations that is undemocratic and non-transparent. The likelihood that what emerges from the coming talks will serve ordinary Americans’ interests is low; the outlook for ordinary citizens in other countries is even bleaker.

Top Agriculture Negotiator on the TPP: Monsanto

The chief agricultural negotiator for the US is the former Monsanto lobbyist, Islam Siddique. There appears not to be a specific agricultural chapter in the TPP. Instead, rules affecting food systems and food safety are woven throughout the text. This agreement is attempting to establish corporations’ rights to skirt domestic courts and laws and sue governments directly with taxpayers paying compensation and fines directly from the treasury. Some of the things we should expect to see include: more large scale farming and more monocultures; destruction of local economies; no input into how our food is grown or what we will be eating; more deforestation; increased use of herbicides and pesticides; increased patenting of life forms; more GMO plants and foods; and no labeling of GMOs in food.

Video: The Battle To Stop The Trans- Pacific Partnership

"Things are boiling, we know the system doesn't work, we know that it is unfair, and eventually, something tips it off," says Dr. Margaret Flowers in this interview with Acronym TV host Dennis Trainor, Jr.. Kevin Zeese, also interviewed here, added, "This is a global, connected, challenge to trans-national neo-liberalism. TPP will unify us and it will be people versus transnationals, and the people will win." The Obama administration has been working hard at crafting the Trans Pacific partnership -- the TPP- for several years and President Obama has said he wants to fast track the agreement through congress this fall. There has been no public debate on the trade agreement that has been called by many NAFTA on steroids, but people are organizing to stop the TPP.

Three Things About the TPP You Need to Know and Share

The Obama administration is brokering a secret global deal that combines all of the worst elements of NAFTA and Citizens United, shoots them up with steroids, sprinkles in a speedball and codifies these principles into a trade agreement that is in fact much more than a trade agreement. The trade agreement is the Trojan horse to bore you and put you to sleep so that when you wake up a global corporate coup will be in place creating a parallel system of justice where three private attorneys would oversee a kangaroo court set up to defend corporate interests that the laws all countries signing on to what is known as the Trans Pacific Partnership would be subservient to.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership is an Assault on Democracy

There is a battle building between the people of the planet and transnational corporations. The battleground is the Trans-Pacific Partnership. It is a battle the people can win if we act in solidarity. The Trans-Pacific Partnership is a global corporate coup that makes corporations more powerful than governments and undermines our national sovereignty. While the public and media are not allowed to see the text, and members of Congress only receive limited, heavily restricted access, 600 corporations have been advising the president and suggesting amendments as they have full access to the documents. This includes some of America’s worst corporate citizens: Monsanto, Walmart, Bank of America, JP Morgan, Phiser and big Pharma, Cargill, Exxon-Mobil, Chevron among them.
