US Sanctions

A Russian Firewall For Venezuela Against US Sanctions

An unnamed company owned entirely by the Kremlin will be buying the Rosneft subsidiary and its oil services and trading operations in Venezuela. The deal between Rosneft (headed by Igor Sechin) and the Kremlin (headed by Vladimir Putin) boils down to the latter now directly taking over. Rosneft is disengaging from its trading arm Rosneft Trading SA, the Geneva-based trading subsidiary, in a deliberate ploy to create a firewall against potential US sanctions in future.  The Kremlin is having the last laugh. Venezuela accounts for over 18 percent of proven oil reserves all over the world and ranks the country as No 1 in the world. The Kremlin is playing the long game, while strengthening in the process in immediate terms the Maduro government’s capacity to withstand the US pressure and to retain its strategic autonomy.

The Decade of Transformation: Remaking International Relations

The coronavirus pandemic is magnifying the cruelty of US foreign policy. The economic collapse is showing the failure of neoliberalism and how the empire-economy is not working for the people of the world, including the United States. The US is losing its global dominance as it demonstrates its own incompetence in response to the pandemic and its viciousness in the midst of this crisis. Other countries are showing leadership and solidarity while the US is escalating its attacks. This is an opportunity to change direction. What seemed impossible in the recent past is now possible. We must seize the opportunity to create change that ensures the necessities of the people are met and the planet is protected. COVID-19 is one immediate crisis, but the climate crisis, nuclear war and economic insecurity all require solidarity between the people of the world.

G77, China Urge End To Unilateral Sanctions

In a statement released on Friday, the coalition of developing nations warned that unilateral sanctions adversely affect the capacity of the targeted countries to deal with the highly contagious disease. “The Group of 77 and China consider that at this juncture, the enactment and application of unilateral coercive economic measures will have a negative impact on the capacity of States to respond efficiently, specifically in the acquisition of medical equipment and supplies to adequately treat their populations in the face of this pandemic. Ultimately, these measures also affect the essential cooperation and solidarity that should prevail among nations,” the statement read. “We therefore call upon the international community to adopt urgent and effective measures to eliminate the use of unilateral coercive economic measures against developing countries,” it added.

Elliott Abrams Disrupted Over ‘Maximum Pressure March’ Campaign Against Venezuela

Members of CODEPINK interrupted a speech by Elliott Abrams hosted by The Alexander Hamilton Society at SAIS, the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in D.C. Abrams, named Special Representative on Venezuela by President Donald Trump in January 2019, oversees the administration’s regime change efforts in Venezuela. The administration’s rhetoric has become significantly more aggressive in 2020, with Trump himself threatening to “smash” and destroy the legitimate elected government of Venezuela. The State Department has followed suit, recently declaring that the “Monroe Doctrine 2.0” is in effect and that this month will be known as “maximum pressure March.” In addition to intensifying its sanctions against Venezuela, the Trump administration has threatened a military blockade and has recently met with the presidents of Brazil and Colombia to coordinate their regime change efforts.

Sanctions Kill! End US Sanctions On Nicaragua

When we hear the word sanctions, most Latin America solidarity activists think immediately of Venezuela. But Nicaragua is also the target of unilateral coercive measures illegally imposed by the US and the most serious sanction, the NICA Act, can’t be blamed on the Trump regime since it was imposed by Congress. Unilateral sanctions are illegal under both the UN and OAS Charters.

San Francisco Labor Council Resolves: Abolish U.S.-Imposed Economic Sanctions

The following resolution was passed unanimously on Feb. 10, 2020. Whereas sanctions and economic blockades are being imposed by the United States and its allies — in violation of international law — against countries that resist Washington’s neoliberal policies and regime change efforts; and Whereas U.S. imposed sanctions are a form of economic warfare, causing death and suffering in some 39 countries with one-third of the world’s population as of 2019; and Whereas U.S. imposed economic sanctions block access to fuel, raw materials and replacement parts interfering with the functioning of critical infrastructure, i.e., electrical grids, water treatment and distribution facilities and hospitals; Whereas in every country facing U.S. imposed economic sanctions, the most vulnerable — infants, children, the chronically ill and the elderly — suffer the most;

Hezbollah ‘Biggest Winner’ Of Lebanese Collapse

The Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah will be the “biggest winner” of the country’s impending economic collapse, Lebanon’s former interior minister Raya al-Hassan warned this week in a wide-ranging interview with the Asia Times. “Do you know who will be the biggest winners? Hezbollah. Because they’d be able to survive an economic collapse much more than anybody else,” said Hassan, speaking from the offices of the Western and Gulf-aligned Future Movement in downtown Beirut.
