Unifor Workers Threaten To Occupy GM Plant

Unifor Local 88 has threatened to take over the GM CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll, Ontario if the company attempts to remove anything from the building. This comes after GM announced last month that it was pausing production of an electric cargo van at the plant which put more than 1,000 jobs at risk.  Members of Unifor Local 88, which represents the workers employed by the plant, quickly took to the streets to call for the protection of Canadian jobs.  “For nearly four decades, Unifor Local 88 members at the GM CAMI Assembly Plant in Ingersoll have built vehicles that drive Canada’s auto industry forward,” a web post by Unifor reads.

Canadian autoworkers have faced many crises over the years, but the present threat is distinct. Lana Payne, President of Unifor, has warned that “If we don’t push back hard against him [US President Donald Trump] and against these companies, we’re going to lose it all.” So far, the debate over what to do has started and stopped with Trump’s tariffs. But the threats go deeper, both for auto companies and for our ability as workers and citizens to determine democratically what kind of society we want – that is, for Canada’s substantive and not just formal sovereignty.

Trump’s trade war against the US’s neighbors Mexico and Canada, as well as China, continues with sweeping tariffs on the three countries going into effect just after midnight on Tuesday, March 4. A 25% tariff was added on all imports from Canada and Mexico, and an additional 10% tariff on imports from China. On March 5, Trump granted a one-month exemption on imports from Mexico and Canada for US automakers, following a conversation with the three largest auto manufacturers in the country: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis, according to an announcement by White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt. Other levies remain in place.

On December 1, Portuguese business executive Carlos Tavares abruptly resigned as CEO of one of the largest auto manufacturers in the world. On December 2, the United Auto Workers (UAW), one of the largest unions in the country, issued a statement welcoming the resignation, as well as announcing that Stellantis finalizing an employee leasing agreement with workers in Kokomo, Indiana, long overdue after Tavares’ delays. In 2023, autoworkers across the United States went on a historic strike against the three largest automakers in the United States: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis.

At midnight on September 15, the UAW began its strike at three plants of the the Big 3 — GM, Ford, and Stellantis. While limited, this strike immediately sent shockwaves across the nation with every bourgeois news outlet turning to cover the strike. Indeed, the strike is proving very popular: 75 percent of Americans side with the UAW in their fight. This strike is part of what some have dubbed a “Hot Labor Summer,” characterized by an averted strike at UPS and the on-going entertainment industry strikes amongst many smaller strikes and labor actions, like Blue Cross Blue Shield workers also represented by the UAW. It’s placed the working class at the center of the national agenda.
