A representative of the UN’s permanent forum on indigenous issues, an advisory group, has been collecting testimony from Dakota Access pipeline protesters who have raised concerns about excessive force, unlawful arrests and mistreatment in jail where some activists have been held in cages.

Standing Rock Sioux Chairman David Archambault II

By Emma Niles for Truth Dig - Demonstrations against the construction of a $3.8 billion oil pipeline in North Dakota began to receive much-needed mainstream media coverage this week when law enforcement and protesters faced off in a tense confrontation that ended in at least 140 arrests. While many people only recently may have learned of the fight against the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL), Standing Rock Sioux tribe Chairman David Archambault II has worked for two years to prevent its construction.

The Security Firm Running Dakota Access Pipeline Intelligence

By Steve Horn for Desmog - TigerSwan is one of several security firms under investigation for its work guarding the Dakota Access pipeline in North Dakota while potentially without a permit. Besides this recent work on the Standing Rock Sioux protests in North Dakota, this company has offices in Iraq and Afghanistan and is run by a special forces Army veteran. According to a summary of the investigation, TigerSwan “is in charge of Dakota Access intelligence and supervises the overall security.”

Woman Arrested On Own Property After Her Land Was Stolen By DAPL

By Whitney Webb for True Activist - Once again, the repression of those against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) is heating up, with 127 activists arrested in North Dakota over the weekend. However, North Dakota isn’t the only place where protests over the Dakota Access pipeline are coming to a head. In Iowa, farmers have had their land seized by the company behind the pipeline, Energy Transfer Partners, through the use of eminent domain.

US Again Uses Militarized Response To Indigenous Seeking Justice

By Ann Wright for Common Dreams. Its like we are back to the 1800s when the U.S. Army rampaged against Native American tribes across the American West. The militarized police and the use of the National Guard this week in responding to the Standing Rock Sioux native American challenge in North Dakota to big oil and their dangerous pipelines reminds one of Custer’s Last Stand against Sitting Bull. On Friday more than 100 local and state police and North Dakota National Guard arrested over 140 people who blocked the highway attempting to stop the destruction of the land. Police in riot gear with automatic rifles lined up across a highway, with multiple MRAPs (mine-resistant ambush protected military vehicles). As this police mayhem was unfolding, a small herd of buffalo stampeded across a nearby field, a strong symbolic signal to the water protectors...

Pipeline Protesters Reportedly Detained Inside Dog Kennels

By Andrew Emett for Nation of Change. Under arrest for protesting against the construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, many activists accused the police of holding them inside cages that appeared to be dog kennels with each detainee receiving a number written on their arm. Although law enforcement agencies routinely arrest political and environmental activists, they have no constitutional right to psychologically antagonize their prisoners by marking them like Holocaust survivors. Since Thursday, at least 142 activists have been arrested while protesting against the North Dakota oil pipeline. On Friday, Sen. Bernie Sanders wrote a letter asking President Obama to intervene on behalf of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation. Calling for a Justice Department investigation into police tactics, Standing Rock Tribal Chairman David Archambault II told Reuters on Saturday, “Let’s reroute the pipeline. It doesn’t have to put our water at risk.” Since August 10, more than 400 protesters have been arrested, including actress Shailene Woodley and Democracy Now! journalist Amy Goodman. The rioting charges against Goodman were dismissed earlier this month.

Dakota Access Pipeline Protesters Occupy Hillary Clinton Campaign HQ

By Staff of RT - The campaign headquarters of Hillary Clinton in Brooklyn, New York, was taken over Thursday by protesters against the Dakota Access Pipeline being constructed in North Dakota and three other states. They’re demanding the candidate declare where she stands. Evidence Of Outrageous Militarized Police Collab With Oil Companies

By Sarah Lazare for AlterNet - Today’s militarized crackdown on water protectors in Cannonball, North Dakota stems from high levels of coordination between the extractive industry, state officials and police departments. It was waged against a frontline camp seeking to block the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL), which would cross beneath the Standing Rock Sioux reservation's main drinking water source and bisect the community's burial grounds.

Solar Panels Delivered To Camp Where Thousands Fight Dakota Access Pipeline

By Staff of Eco Watch - Actor Mark Ruffalo and Native Renewables founder Wahleah Johns presented Standing Rock Sioux tribal elders with mobile solar panels on trailers, bringing clean power to the protest encampment where the largest gathering of Native Americans in modern history is taking a stand against the Dakota Access Pipeline. "This pipeline is a black snake that traverses four states and 200 waterways with fracked Bakken oil," said Ruffalo, co-founder of The Solutions Project, which works to accelerate the transition to 100 percent clean and renewable energy.

Police Are Violating Civil Rights Of Dakota Access Pipeline Opponents

By Michael McLaughlin for The Huffington Post - This week, the Standing Rock Sioux called on the Department of Justice to investigate state and local authorities for civil rights violations during protests over the controversial Dakota Access Pipeline. But North Dakota authorities are refuting the tribe’s accusations, saying they’ve been patient and accommodating with protesters. “We keep getting portrayed as the jackbooted thugs coming down for a confrontation,”

83 People Arrested, Maced in North Dakota

By Nadia Prupis for Common Dreams. More than 80 people were arrested in North Dakota on Saturday, as police armed with pepper spray descended on a protest near the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) construction site. The 83 water protectors were hit with charges ranging from rioting to criminal trespass, according to the Morton County sheriff's department. Saturday's arrests follow reports of escalating police abuse at the protest sites, including beatings and unnecessary strip-searches of those arrested. On Twitter, Ojibwe activist and attorney Tara Houska wrote: Journalists, attorneys, indigenous protectors arrested & maced while demonstrating today. Whose interest is North Dakota protecting? Construction on the pipeline is continuing despite a request from the federal government to put a halt on activity so that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can properly consider objections.

By Phil McKenna for Inside Climate News - BISMARCK, N.D.—Senior officials at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and two other federal agencies raised serious environmental and safety objections to the North Dakota section of the controversial Dakota Access oil pipeline, the same objections being voiced in a large protest by the Standing Rock Sioux tribe that has so far succeeded in halting construction.

Beyond The Spectacle Of The Dakota Access Protest

By Phil McKenna for Medium - When I first arrived at the camp of the Seven Council Fires in Cannon Ball, N.D. where more than 1,000 mostly Native American demonstrators had gathered to oppose the Dakota Access pipeline, I was completely overwhelmed. It was a gorgeous late summer afternoon in a field filled with horses, tipis and headdresses. Tribal leaders from across the West — Navajo from Arizona, Yakama and Swinomish from Washington State
