Donald Trump

“Making America Great” At Americans’ Expense

By Ralph Nader. Donald J. Trump was a builder of casinos and high-priced hotels and golf courses. Now he is a builder of a tower of contradictions for the American people that is making “America Great” at their expense. He made many conflicting promises throughout his presidential campaign. He was going to be the “voice of the people.” He was going to make their safety and their job expansion his number one priority. He was going to make sure that everybody had health insurance under his then unannounced plan. He was going to deregulate businesses, cut taxes, increase the military budget, build and repair the country’s public infrastructure and not surge the deficit. He was going to scrap the trade agreements known as NAFTA and the WTO.

The Dance Of Death

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - The ruling corporate elites no longer seek to build. They seek to destroy. They are agents of death. They crave the unimpeded power to cannibalize the country and pollute and degrade the ecosystem to feed an insatiable lust for wealth, power and hedonism. Wars and military “virtues” are celebrated. Intelligence, empathy and the common good are banished. Culture is degraded to patriotic kitsch. Education is designed only to instill technical proficiency to serve the poisonous engine of corporate capitalism. Historical amnesia shuts us off from the past, the present and the future. Those branded as unproductive or redundant are discarded and left to struggle in poverty or locked away in cages.

Trump Travel Ban: US States Launch Legal Challenges

By Staff of BBC News - Several US states have launched legal challenges against President Donald Trump's revised travel ban. Mr Trump signed an executive order placing a 90-day ban on people from six mainly Muslim countries on Monday. New York maintains the new directive is a ban on Muslims while Washington says it is harmful to the state. Oregon and Massachusetts later also joined. The ban begins on 16 March, with the White House saying it is "very confident" of winning in court. Mr Trump's original order was more expansive but it was defeated after a legal challenge initially mounted by Washington and Minnesota. Lawyers for those states say their original complaint applies to the revised order and are pursuing their cases.

Judge: Revised Trump Ban Cannot Be Enforced On Syrian Family

By Todd Richmond for Associated Press - MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A federal judge on Friday blocked President Donald Trump's administration from enforcing his new travel ban against a Syrian family looking to escape their war-torn homeland by fleeing to Wisconsin. The ruling likely is the first by a judge since Trump issued a revised travel ban on Monday, according to a spokesman for the Washington state attorney general, who has led states challenging the ban. A Syrian Muslim man who was granted asylum and settled in Wisconsin has been working since last year to win U.S. government approval for his wife and 3-year-old daughter to leave the devastated city of Aleppo and join him here...

Trump’s Plan To Gut HUD Threatens Very Survival Of America’s Poor

By Sarah Lazare for AlterNet - Rosemary Holmes has lived in Newark's Terrell Holmes for the better part of six decades. She, like many others in the building, has raised children in its courtyards and hallways, and forged a tight-knit community of friends and neighbors. At the age of 68, she has been forced to band with other tenants to fight local efforts to shutter the facility. Now, as the Trump administration weighs plans to gut the Department of Housing and Urban Development, she has a new battle on her hands. “Any time they move a person to someplace they don't want to live, it's imprisonment,” she told AlterNet over the phone. “I am a human being, and I deserve to live where I want to live. Us, the ones who really want to be here...

More Mideast Madness As Trump Prepares To March

By Eric Margolis for Eric Margolis - We are now moving rapidly into stage II of Levantine Madness as the US boosts its intervention in the war-torn Mideast. Five thousand US troops are back in Iraq to bolster the shattered nation’s puppet regime that is propped up by American bayonets. New Iraqi military formations have been formed, totally equipped with modern US M1 Abrams tanks, Humvees, and fleets of trucks. More US forces are on the way. These US-financed Iraqi units are euphemistically called ‘anti-terrorism forces’ and are supervised by US officers. In fact, what we see is the old British Imperial Raj formula of white officers commanding native mercenary troops.

Trump Cites Fake FBI Terror Plots To Justify Muslim Ban

by Chip Gibbons for BORDC - On Monday March 6, 2017, the Trump Administration announced its second attempt at a Muslim Ban. While it is impossible to justify a ban that is fundamentally rooted in animus towards Muslims, Trump tried to rectify his previous executive order’s most glaring problems. For example, the new ban will not apply to legal permanent residents or people who currently hold valid visas. The constitutional issues are much deeper than that. Ruling against the first ban, federal courts failed to find a rational relationship between barring the entry of individuals from the countries listed and a national security purpose.

Trump Escalates US War In Syria

By Nadia Prupis for Common Dreams - Deployment may be signal that Trump administration will give Pentagon more flexibility in calling shots in fight. U.S. marines are in Syria to augment the fight against the Islamic State (ISIS) in the battle for Raqqa, the militant group's de facto capital, having quietly arrived in the country weeks ago, defense officials confirmed to the Washington Post on Wednesday. About 400 new troops have been deployed overall, in addition to the 500 already on the ground. The plan had been in the works "for some time," according to the Post's Dan Lamothe and Thomas Gibbons-Neff.

It’s Not Trump, US In Rapid Decline, Still In Wars

By John Feffer for Foreign Policy In Focus - The first signs of decline are physical. Citizens don’t grow as tall. They don’t live as long. They start killing each other in large numbers. Sounds like the post-mortem for a society that disappeared long ago, a conclusion that archaeologists deliver after sifting through bone fragments and pottery shards. Why, the puzzled scholars ask, did such a vibrant society, which produced beautiful art and remarkable scientific advances, fall apart so rapidly and leave so little behind in the unforgiving rainforest? This time, however, the diagnosis is being provided in real time. And the society in decline is the most powerful country in the world.

Activists Already Scored Victories Against Trump’s Policies

By Adam Gabbatt for The Guardian - The campaign was launched in October 2016, in response to Donald Trump’s infamous boasts that his fame allowed him to sexually assault women; specifically, to “grab them by the pussy”. GrabYourWallet lists dozens of companies which have ties to the president – either by selling his or his family’s products, or by endorsing him during the election campaign. Since the campaign started a number of companies have dropped Ivanka Trump’s clothing line, including Shoes.com, Shopstyle and most recently Nordstrom. In addition to delivering a financial hit to Ivanka Trump, the campaign succeeded in upsetting the president, who tweeted that his daughter had been “treated so unfairly” by Nordstrom

NILC Statement On New Muslim Ban Executive Order

By Juan Gastelum for NILC - LOS ANGELES — President Donald Trump today signed a new executive order banning entry to the U.S. of individuals from six Muslim-majority countries and of all refugees. The order is meant to supplant a previous directive issued in January that remains blocked after several courts found it was unlikely to stand up to constitutional muster. That order barred entry from seven Muslim-majority countries and also halted resettlement in the U.S. of any new refugees. Marielena Hincapié, executive director of the National Immigration Law Center, issued the following statement: “Throughout the presidential campaign and even after the signing of the previous executive order banning Muslims and refugees...

Three Lessons From Fighting Obama Raids To Organize Under Trump Regime

By Jacinta Gonzalez for Mijente - As many community members start to plan out emergency response teams and community defense, there is a need to think out short and long term organizing strategies that we can use so that we do not fall into patterns of solely doing individual deportation cases, press and mobilizing work, but are also thinking about long-term power building. While enforcement under the new regime represents an expansion and escalation, it is built upon past practices that can provide us with key lessons now. In 2013, the New Orleans community was facing an increasing ICE presence in immigrant neighborhoods including raids

Former NSA Whistleblower: ‘Trump Absolutely Right He Was Wiretapped’

By Tyler Durden for Zero Hedge - Former NSA executive and whistleblower William Binney confirmed that President Donald J. Trump is “absolutely right” to claim he was wiretapped and monitored. Binney, a 36 year NSA veteran also considered a ‘legend’ within the agency, created the agency’s mass surveillance program for digital information and served as the senior technical director within the agency, who managed six thousand NSA employees. After the events of September 11th, 2001, Binney resigned from the NSA and “became a whistleblower when discovering that the data-monitoring program he had helped develop — nicknamed ThinThread...

Donald Trump’s Greatest Allies Are The Liberal Elites

By Chris Hedges For Truth Dig - The liberal elites, who bear significant responsibility for the death of our democracy, now hold themselves up as the saviors of the republic. They have embarked, despite their own corruption and their complicity in neoliberalism and the crimes of empire, on a self-righteous moral crusade to topple Donald Trump. It is quite a show. They attack Trump’s “lies,” denounce executive orders such as his travel ban as un-American and blame Trump’s election on Russia or FBI Director James Comey rather than the failed neoliberal policies they themselves advanced. Where was this moral outrage when our privacy was taken from us by the security and surveillance state, the criminals on Wall Street were bailed out...

Resistance In The Age Of Trump

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers. This article summarizes the history of the Trump era and the response by the popular resistance movement. It links to a series of articles written over the last six weeks, reporting on the movement, what challenges we face, our task and next steps. In addition, to the articles, we include an interview by Chris Hedges of Popular Resistance co-director, Kevin Zeese. By combining all of this into one document we can see the growth and impact of the movement. We see that people are growing their power, getting organized and mobilizing in effective ways. While there are challenges, the movement is off to a strong start during the Trump era but must keep growing, push for positive change as well as challenging the worst policies of our era. When we do so, the people will realize their power like they have not done in recent generations and the movement will have a greater and longer term impact than Trump and the bi-partisans that run the US government for the wealthiest, and not for the people.
