Crowd-Fund a Court Stenographer for Bradley Manning’s Trial

The trial of Bradley Manning will have an enormous impact on press freedom and the rights of future whistle-blowers. Help us crowd-fund enough donations so we can hire a court stenographer to take transcripts of the trial. The government refuses to make its transcripts available to the public.

A Realistic Radical Remaking of the Economy

We are in a “prehistory” of a radical remaking of the economy—not corporate capitalist, state socialist, or welfare-statist. The historian Howard Brick, in Transcending Capitalism: Visions of a New Society in Modern American Thought, criticized the post-capitalist imaginings of the past century for failing to make clear how and when the segue to the next stage would take place. The merit of economic democracy thinking is that it is pragmatic and realistic. The present system while failing most Americans and in collapse is resilient but there are growing patterns of resistance. How and, when will resistance get us out of the economic corruption of corporate capitalism? Economic democracy is developing a comprehensive alternative that is as theoretically rigorous and practical, with a blueprint for an economic democracy political program.

Using Local Governance to Challenge Corporate Power: Democracy School

The Democracy School: An effective training for communities to exercise local governance by passing ordinances to protect their environments from being destroyed by outside corporations. This schooling has helped hundreds of towns and municipalities to take control of their communities to successfully resist corporate "personhood" by educating and uniting people into true democratic action. A tool for powerful activism.

TransCanada Spent $280,000 Lobbying for Tar Sands Pipeline

TransCanada, the multinational corporation hoping to build the controversial northern half of the Keystone XL pipeline, spent over $280,000 on lobbying the U.S. government in the first quarter (Q1) of 2013, according to lobbying disclosure records. In addition to the $250,000 paid to Paul Elliott - TransCanada's infamous in-house lobbyist and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's national deputy campaign manager during her 2008 run for president - three outside firms lobbied on TransCanada's behalf to promote KXL. The outside firms: Bryan Cave LLP, which reported $20,000 in earnings from TransCanda in Q1; McKenna, Long & Aldridge, which was paid $10,000 by TransCanada during Q1; and Van Ness Feldman, which TransCanada paid an amount under $5,000, falling under the mandatory reporting ceiling.

Bradley Manning is Off-Limits at SF Pride Parade

News reports yesterday indicated that Bradley Manning, widely known to be gay, had been selected to be one of the Grand Marshals of the annual San Francisco gay pride parade, named by the LGBT Pride Celebration Committee. When the predictable backlash instantly ensued, the president of the Board of SF Pride, Lisa L Williams, quickly capitulated, issuing a cowardly, imperious statement that has to be read to be believed.

Both Parties Caused Sequestration

As the smoke clears on the implementation of the across-the-board cuts in vitally needed domestic programs, it must be acknowledged that the labor movement and our allies, together with the overwhelming majority of the population, have suffered yet another devastating blow, this one administered by politicians of both major parties, as well as by the president himself. It is estimated that as a result of the cuts, over 700,000 workers will lose their jobs by the end of this year.

Protesters Clear the Room at Brennan Confirmation Hearings

Video of Code Pink disruption of the John Brennan Confirmation Hearing yesterday:

The American People Could Rule Better than the Political and Economic Elites

If you watched the corporate media and listened to the political leadership you would think Americans are Tea Party members who oppose taxes, even on the wealthy, would deny health care to someone in need who does not have insurance and favor war, rather than the United Nations. But, in fact, as the polls below show the opposite is true on these and other issues. On issue after issue both parties, especially the Republican Party, are out of step with the views of super-majorities of Americans. This is an update to a previous article, “We Stand With the Majority of Americans: Human Needs, Not Corporate Greed.” When the polls in this article and the previous one are reviewed it is evident the people would run the country better than the economic and political elites.
