Community Defense Brigades Will Defend Neighbors When Threatened BY ICE

Faced with President Donald Trump’s escalation of some of the country’s worst immigration policies—massive Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, the Muslim ban, and tearing migrant children from their families at the country’s southern border—activists and community organizers have rallied behind immigrant communities. One key element of the fightback is the community defense patrol, a rapid response tactic designed to quickly react to ICE activity. Following the recent mass workplace ICE raid in Mississippi, in which 680 people were arrested, the critical need for community education and rapid response to ICE is all the more evident.

Immigrant, Anti-ICE, Anti-Police & Solidarity Activists To Rally At Greyhound Bus Station To Demand: ICE OFF OUR BUSES!

A coalition of pro-migrant, labor, anti-police brutality, and progressive activists are coming together to rally at Port Authority on August 23 to demand that Greyhound Corporation end collaboration with Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents. Every day across the U.S., ICE, DHS and Border Patrol agents are allowed to board buses with Greyhound’s permission in an attempt to detain migrants. Greyhound is NOT required to allow immigration agents onto its buses and should stop all collaboration immediately.

What It’s Like To Grow Up Hunted

When I was just 10, I already knew what it was like to plan for a future without my parents. It was a quiet Sunday night when my dad told me to hide in a closet — and stay there until he said to come out. As I sat in the dark, I knew this was part of my life, part of my identity. The darkness and fear slowly penetrated my heart. I tightened up my fist, as if to squeeze the bravery I had in my heart to walk out of the closet. My brother and sister were hidden somewhere else, and all the lights were out.

Wyatt Detention Captain Resigns After Driving Truck Into Protesters

Captain Thomas Woodworth has resigned from his position at the Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility -- after driving his pick-up truck into protesters outside the facility this week.  A vigil at the Wyatt Detention Center turned into a chaotic scene when a pickup truck came close to hitting protesters. That sparked a conflict between protestors and guards and Central Falls Police. Pepper spray was deployed -- there are reports of multiple injuries.

ICE: You’re Not Welcome In The South

Last week, I dropped my kids off for their first day of school in our small Alabama town of not even 7,000 people. The kids were excited, but I was a nervous wreck. My kids — ages 8 and 11 — are my heart and joy. Would they have everything they need?  Like every dad, my mind raced through a million scenarios. My oldest is starting middle school. What haven’t I anticipated? What might come up and wreck his whole day, setting the tone for the school year?  None of these came close to what families faced just a few hours west from us on their first day of school.

For True Climate Justice, Abolish ICE And CBP

Last month, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Senator Kamala Harris released their Climate Equity Act – the first draft of a critical component of a Green New Deal. The act aims to protect marginalized communities as Congress attempts to “address” climate change by creating a system that gives environmental legislation an equity score based on its impact on “frontline communities.” By their definition, frontline communities include people of color, indigenous and low-income people, as well as groups vulnerable to energy transitions...

Jewish Groups Are Taking Action From Coast To Coast To Close The Camps

Jewish Communities are holding "Close The Camps" actions across the country to protest the detention of migrants in the United States, the current immigration policies and mistreatment of migrants seeking asylum. On July 30, Never Again movement activists blockaded the Minnesota Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in St. Paul for over three hours. Twenty seven were arrested. On August 2, Jewish Activists marched and rallied in Portland Maine. On August 5, Jewish activists protested at the GEO Group office in Los Angeles. The GEO Group is one of the private corporations that profits by running migrant detention centers. More protests are planned in the coming weeks.

‘Let Them Go!’: Tears, Shock Over ICE Raids At Mississippi Food Processing Plants

MORTON — U.S. immigration officials raided numerous Mississippi food processing plants Wednesday, arresting 680 mostly Latino workers in what marked the largest workplace sting in at least a decade. The raids, planned months ago, happened just hours before President Donald Trump was scheduled to visit El Paso, Texas, the majority-Latino city where a man linked to an online screed about a "Hispanic invasion" was charged in a shooting that left 22 people dead in the border city.

ICE Contracts Are Booming. See Which Vendors Are In Your State.

Companies and other entities that make money from Immigration and Customs Enforcement contracts are flush in 2019, thanks to President Trump's harsh immigration operation. On July 24, Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Richard Blumnethal (D-Ct.) sent a letter to the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) asking for more information on its reported rampant use of solitary confinement. A joint investigation by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists...

Seattle, WA: Rolling Picket Shuts Down ICE Profiteers

On July 26th a lively rolling picket of over 40 people marched through downtown Seattle, shutting down bank branches and occupying the lobbies of investment firm offices. HSBC, U.S. Bank, Prudential Financial, BlackRock Inc. and Barclays bank were targeted. All of these firms have financial relationships with GEO Group and CoreCivic, the primary private detention operators for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The rolling picket, co-organized by Olympia Assembly and El Comite...

The Top 5 Ways To Defeat ICE Agents

The Democrats and the corporate media will breathlessly tell you how Donald Trump is a racist (he is). They’ll relay the gut-wrenching horror of having your family ripped apart by Border Patrol (I’m sure it is). They’ll let you know that keeping children in cages is not what America stands for and not who we are (it kinda is). But despite all of this, they practically never tell everyone how to actually fight back against ICE raids and Border Patrol detentions. Welcome to the paradoxical sales pitch of the neoliberal morass—“Act like you hate racism while doing almost nothing to stop racist policies that have gone on for decades!”

“This Isn’t Just Something Happening Elsewhere”: Protesters Rally Outside Vermont ICE facility

Hundreds marched through the rain Sunday afternoon to protest outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement building in Williston. The demonstration was put on by the combined force of dozens of local activist groups including Women's March Vermont, Migrant Justice and the Peace and Justice Center. “If you’re taking children away from their mothers and leaving them in a room with no one to care for them, you need to quit your job,” said Bob Fishel, of Burlington.

Neighbors Form Human Barricade To Protect Dad And Son From ICE Agents

“I could see if these people were bad criminals, but they’re not. They’re just trying to provide for their kids,” a neighbor told a Nashville TV station. A group of sympathetic Tennessee neighbors mobilized Monday to form a human barricade to successfully protect a father from arrest by two Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Neighbors in Nashville first brought food, water and gas to the unidentified man and his 12-year-old son, who were holed up for close to four hours in the family van after it was blocked in their driveway by the ICE agents, who witnesses said were not in uniform.

ICE Raids, Asylum Seekers And The Othering Of People Of Color

Like many of you, I’ve watched the reports and rumors of expected ICE raids, images of adults and children in U.S. concentration camps and the attacks on asylum seekers with horror. The large-scale ICE raids that officials have hinted at haven’t yet materialized as I write this, but they’ve succeeded in what may have been their real objective: terrorizing immigrant communities. Central and South Americans seem to be mainly in the crosshairs, but they’re far from the only ones.

Intersectional Raids, Calls For More Pipelines & A Creative Mind

If someone in your neighborhood is going on a rampage killing a bunch of neighbors and burying them in his backyard to the point that he's running out of room – do you say, well geez Bob, this is really a problem of mass grave space? What this metaphor has to do with pipelines, media literacy and creative resistance. Next up: ICE raids and the vital intersections between workers rights, migrant rights and the prison industrial complex. Finally, Ana Tiffany Devez sits down to talk about the past, present and future of fighting and building in El Paso.
