The biggest sale this year for Black Friday is deportation. As millions gathered around tables and screens, celebrating their families and purchases, we the folks of North Carolina are in mourning. On Friday morning, August 23rd, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.) set a biometric trap for Samuel Oliver-Bruno. After eleven months of living in the basement of City Well Church in Durham, advocating for “prosecutorial discretion,” Samuel Oliver-Bruno unsettled sanctuary and left for an immigration appointment in nearby Morrisville. Held by clergy and spirited warriors, Samuel walked into the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services office where he was besieged by officers. His son, Daniel, was swept into a mangle of arms and charged with assaulting an officer.

I am originally from El Salvador and came to the U.S. with my family when I was 7 years old. My life has revolved around immigration issues. In my small hometown in New Bedford, Massachusetts, I experienced one of the largest workplace raids under George W. Bush's administration. And so early on, my family instilled in me the need to help others around immigration issues.  At the time, my family used to live in stack houses, which are three-story houses that have apartments stacked on top of each other. After the raid occurred, we ended up taking in a large number of migrant families. Most of them were women left with children. Families of five would split these two one-bedroom apartments that my dad rented.

Today - the Day of Mourning, organizers with The FANG Collective and community members demonstrated outside the home of Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson over the county's "287(g)" agreement with Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).  In February 2017 the Bristol County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), led by Sheriff Hodgson, signed a 287(g) agreement with ICE, which deputizes BCSO personnel the authority to exercise immigration-related functions usually reserved for ICE officers. Barnstable and Plymouth Counties, along with the Massachusetts Department of Corrections have 287(g) agreements with ICE.

Students At Two Maryland Universities Protest ICE Contracts

BALTIMORE (AP)- Students at two Maryland campuses are demanding their universities end contracts with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.            The Baltimore Sun reports the Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, College Park are among six higher-education institutions that have ICE contracts.            On Thursday, Johns Hopkins students conducted a teach-in and rally calling on the Baltimore school to end the contracts, arguing the federal agency violates human rights and goes against the university's values.

The DEA And ICE Are Hiding Surveillance Cameras In Streetlights

The US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have hidden an undisclosed number of covert surveillance cameras inside streetlights around the country, federal contracting documents reveal. According to government procurement data, the DEA has paid a Houston, Texas company called Cowboy Streetlight Concealments LLC roughly $22,000 since June 2018 for “video recording and reproducing equipment.” ICE paid out about $28,000 to Cowboy Streetlight Concealments over the same period of time. It’s unclear where the DEA and ICE streetlight cameras have been installed, or where the next deployments will take place. ICE offices in Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio have provided funding for recent acquisitions from Cowboy Streetlight Concealments...

“You have to leave the country now that Trump is president.” That’s what Latinx children heard from some white schoolmates in the small southeastern Iowa town of Mount Pleasant in the days after Donald Trump was elected. Eighteen months later, the threat of deportation seemed much more real than a schoolyard taunt. On May 9, Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained 32 men—22 from Guatemala and the rest from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras—at Mount Pleasant’s Midwest Precast Concrete (MPC) plant. A concrete mixing plant that started up more than a decade ago, MPC owes its building and success largely to migrant Latino labor, including that of some highly valued supervisors who were swept up.

FANG Shuts Down ICE, Continues Campaign Of Escalation

Last Monday FANG deployed multiple blockades in North Dartmouth, Massachusetts that shut down all entrances to the Bristol County Jail and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility. At the facility’s main entrance, climbers scaled two 24 foot tripods, while at the second entrance, two people locked into a concrete barricade, with one of them also locking their neck to the gate. The Bristol County Sheriff’s officers responded with violence. They pulled apart and tore down both tripods causing the climbers to fall and slam into the pavement. The sheriffs then used pain compliance on Sherrie, an indigenous woman of color and a co-founder of FANG, in an unsuccessful attempt to get them to release from their lockbox.

FBI Pressed Detained Anti-ICE Activist For Information On Protests, Offering Immigration Help

ON FRIDAY, after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested a longtime U.S. resident protesting against ICE in San Antonio, Texas, the FBI stepped in for an interrogation, telling the resident, 18-year-old Sergio Salazar, that his immigration status had been revoked because he was a “bad person.” The FBI agents asked him to inform on fellow protesters and said if he did so it could help his immigration case. “It seems evident that he was targeted here because of his involvement in the anti-ICE protests,” said Jonathan Ryan, Salazar’s lawyer from RAICES Texas, an immigrant advocacy group. “We’re very concerned about how directed and targeted and aggressive and quick this was.” ICE has been criticized for recent detentions and deportations of other activists, but little else has emerged that indicates an FBI interest in anti-ICE protests.

#OccupyICE Movement Grows Momentum In Colorado

There was a rally of more than 100 people coinciding with the blockade, and providing water, food, songs and chants, and support to the blockade participants. The large crowd was met with militarized Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officers and a team fitted for riot control. Around 6:00pm, a DHS officer began sawing off one PVC pipe at a time with a hand saw (none of the eight participants were injured during the sawing). After each individual was removed from the PVC pipes, they were cuffed with zip ties and placed into a transport vehicle. Supporters of the blockade participants expected the transport vehicle was heading to the Arapahoe County Detention Center. Instead, the transport vehicle drove a mile down the road and told the eight individuals they could leave after officers wrote up their citations and court summons. However, one of the eight refused to give the police any personal information.
