International Criminal Court (ICC)

Meetings At The Hague Reveal Crisis And Turmoil

The issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former War Minister, Yoav Gallant, on November 21, not only shocked the Israeli and U.S. establishment but also some of the 125 State Parties to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), who would soon be tasked with executing those warrants, once they’ve been certified and communicated to them by the Court Registry. This past week, in the sprawling chambers of the World Forum Convention Center in The Hague, representatives of those countries gathered for the 23rd Session of the ICC’s Assembly of State Parties (ASP), the representative body that funds, governs, and supervises the implementation of the ICC’s founding treaty.

Without Including Biden And Blinken, International Criminal Court Arrest Warrants Are A Sham

After months of procedural stalling, allegations of sexual harassment against the lead prosecutor and systematic threats from the United States and its Western allies, it did not appear that the International Criminal Court (ICC) would even execute the final phase of the criminal indictment process and Israeli impunity would continue. But on November 20, 2024, six months to the day after Karim Khan, chief prosecutor for the court, submitted his request for the indictments of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant and Hamas leaders Mohammed Deif, Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, the court finally indicted Netanyahu, Gallant and threw in Mohammed Deif who Israel claims to have assassinated, as they did to Sinwar and Haniyeh.

United States Raises Middle Finger To The International Criminal Court

Finally, before history ends, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity. The indictment stated that there ‘are reasonable grounds to believe that both individuals intentionally and knowingly deprived the civilian population in Gaza of objects indispensable to their survival, including food, water, and medicine and medical supplies, as well as fuel and electricity’. The court found sufficient reasons to believe that the two men ‘bear criminal responsibility’ for the war crime of starvation as a method of warfare, the crimes against humanity of murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts, and the war crime of intentionally directing an attack against a civilian population.

US Response To ICC Netanyahu Warrant Could Deal Death Blow To International Law

The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) stunning issuance of arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity is a major game changer. After years of impunity, the chickens unleashed by Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza have finally come home to roost. These charges against Netanyahu and Gallant are momentous. This is the first time the ICC has issued arrest warrants against an Israeli official for crimes against the Palestinian people. It is only the second time in its 22 years of existence that the ICC has issued an arrest warrant for someone who is not from the African continent.

West Splits On Israel: US threatens ICC And Allies Over Arrest Warrant

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has issued an arrest warrant for Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, charging them with war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. This historic decision has led to a political split in the West. The European Union, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have expressed support for the ICC. On the other hand, the United States is openly attacking the ICC and threatening to impose sanctions. US President Joe Biden blasted the ICC’s charges as “outrageous”. The White House said it “fundamentally rejects” the Court’s order.

Israel’s Genocide Day 412: Israel Kills 87 Palestinians In Gaza

Israeli forces killed nine Palestinians in a military raid on Jenin that lasted more than 48 hours between Wednesday and Thursday. Local residents told Mondoweiss that Israeli forces entered the industrial area in Jenin late night Wednesday and headed towards the city’s refugee camp, where they clashed with Palestinian fighters. The Israeli army also took over several rooftops and installed snipers on the refugee camp’s perimeter. Shortly before the start of the invasion of the refugee camp, Israeli forces raided the village of Kufr Dan, to the west of Jenin city, where the Palestinian Red Crescent said that its teams treated a Palestinian man wounded by a live bullet in the chest.

OIC And Arab League Seek Suspension Of Israel’s UN Membership

A joint summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the Arab League at Riyadh on Monday, November 11 pushed for broader international support for Israel’s expulsion from the UN in the coming days and formation of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. The joint statement issued at the end of the summit says that the participants will prepare a draft resolution to be presented in “tenth special session (uniting for peace)” in the General Assembly to seek Israel’s expulsion “on the basis of its violations of the United Nations Charter, its threat to international peace and security and failure to its membership,” obligations as per the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 19, 2024.

Turmoil At The ICC As Fears Rise Over Israeli and US Interference

The delay in issuing ICC warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant, followed by the replacement of the presiding judge, has raised serious concerns about the court's functioning and possible machinations behind the scenes.

What Is Going On At The International Criminal Court?

The International Criminal Court has never faced such scandalous pressure since its establishment. Even when an arrest warrant was issued against Russian President Vladimir Putin, the head of a nuclear state, we did not see major threats being made against the ICC and its staff as we are seeing now. The court has been rightfully criticised for its procrastination and slowness over issues linked to Palestine. Since the referral of numerous crimes to the ICC in June this year, the Office of the Chief Prosecutor has not acted at the same level that it has done in other situations, especially in cases related to African countries and Ukraine.

US Support For Israel’s War Crimes Is Bipartisan

Israel has received staunch bipartisan support from the Democratic and Republican Parties in Washington, as it brutally bombs Gaza; invades Lebanon; and attacks Iran, Syria, and Yemen. The Biden-Harris administration has sent Israel at least $17.9 billion in arms and military aid since October 2023. Meanwhile, UN experts say Israel is guilty of genocide, and Tel Aviv is being investigated by the International Court of Justice on charges of genocide. The International Criminal Court has also applied for arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of crimes against humanity, including “extermination” and “starvation of civilians as a method of warfare as a war crime”.

Netanyahu Is Coming To New York City And Will Be Greeted By Mass Protest

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to deliver an address at the United Nations General Assembly later this week. On Thursday, September 26, several anti-imperialist organizations, organized under the Shut it Down For Palestine Coalition, are holding a demonstration denouncing Netanyahu’s visit and demanding that he be arrested for genocide and crimes against humanity. In August, International Criminal Court (ICC) Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan urged ICC judges to rule on his request for arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Khan had applied for arrest warrants back in May for the two top Israeli leaders for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

ICC Prosecutor Says World Leaders ‘Threatened’ Him Over Israel

The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) says world leaders pressured him not to apply for arrest warrants for the Israeli prime minister and defense minister on allegations of war crimes in Gaza, the BBC reported on 5 September. Karim Khan told the BBC, “Several leaders and others told me and advised me and cautioned me,” he said. In May, Khan said there were reasonable grounds to believe that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had committed war crimes during the Israeli assault on Gaza that has killed over 40,000 Palestinians, the majority women and children.

Update On The ICC Arrest Warrants For Benjamin Netanyahu And Yoav Gallant

It was a landmark ruling by the world’s supreme judicial body. Israel’s 57-year occupation and colonial settlement of the Palestinian territories are unlawful, it must withdraw from the territories “as rapidly as possible,” and UN member states must hold Israel to account for its wrongful acts, the International Court of Justice declared last July 19, in The Hague, in a non-binding 12-3 vote. Sometime this fall, across town, a 3-judge panel of a totally different court – the International Criminal Court (independent from the UN) – will issue one of two far more consequential rulings.

USA Lets Athletes Cheat With Steroids, While Accusing Russia And China

The United States has for a decade allowed athletes in international competitions, including the Olympics, to use prohibited drugs such as steroids, recruiting them as informants to spy on others. This is according to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), the global authority on the use of banned substances in sports. WADA revealed this in a statement on August 7, detailing “a scheme whereby the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) allowed athletes who had doped, to compete for years, in at least one case without ever publishing or sanctioning their anti-doping rule violations, in direct contravention of the World Anti-Doping Code and USADA’s own rules”.

UK To Restrict Arms Sales To Israel, Drop ICC Objection

The UK is expected to put restrictions on weapons sales to Israel, sources revealed exclusively to Middle East Eye (MEE) on 25 July. According to the outlet, London is also expected to drop its objection to the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to seek an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “In the coming days the government is likely to introduce some restrictions on arms sales but not suspend sales entirely,” informed Labour Party sources told MEE, adding that these restrictions would most likely affect the sale of offensive weapons.
