A Women’s Economic Agenda For The Next President

By Elise Gould for EPI - Progress on closing the gap between men’s and women’s wages in the U.S. economy has been glacially slow in recent decades—and gender wage parity has become a top priority for those committed to ensuring the economic security of American women. This priority is absolutely essential. No matter how you cut it, the gender wage gap is real and it matters (link to paper). That said, pay parity cannot be the only goal for those looking to improve the economic lot of American women.

Zapatistas Enter Mexico’s Presidential Race

By Andrew S. Vargas for Remezcla - The Zapatistas are dipping their toes into Mexican electoral politics. Last week, the near-mythical army of indigenous resistance released a communiqué summarizing the basic points of discussion that characterized the 5th National Indigenous Congress (CNI) in Chiapas, and it included a bombshell announcement. After ticking off an infuriatingly long list of violations of indigenous rights and sovereignty across Mexico (with a shoutout to the Dakota Access Pipeline protests,)

Pharma Executives Worry Presidential Candidates Demand Reform

By Lee Fang for The Intercept - Responding to tough talk by presidential candidates about price gouging by drug companies, pharmaceutical executives have told investors that they are working actively to influence the political debate. And in a move that reveals how much leeway drug firms actually have over pricing decisions, some are even saying that they have minimized price hikes in recent months to avoid attracting attention. Democratic contenders Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton have both called for the government to do much more to bring down the price of medications.

Super PACs Lead Election Spending As White House Race Nears

By Michael Beckel for Aljazeera - The 2016 White House race is on its way to being the most expensive in history. Presidential candidates and the political groups supporting them combined to raise more than$837 million during 2015, driven by a massive influx of cash to big-money super PACs, according to a Center for Public Integrity analysis of new campaign finance filings. The new filings show that the campaigns of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clintonand Bernie Sanders and Republican contenders Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio raised the most impressive sums in 2015.

Facts Over Fiction, Presidential Obsession & Less Meat

By Eleanor Goldfield for Occupy - We are OBSESSED with the presidential elections - and by we, I mean corporatized media ergo the American people by a very sick osmosis. There's more to 2016 (and indeed to 2015) than who ends up in the White House. Much more. Meanwhile, let's do some fact checking and lie wrecking post-state of the union and mid-presidential primary madness. Plus a few suggestions on what you can do to break away from this red white and blue rat race. Finally, Mark Pershin wants you to eat LESS meat, in the interest of saving the planet. But first, deeds not words.

Democratic Debate: Alan Greenspan’s Spouse Should Not Have Co-Hosted

By Pam Martens and Russ Martens for Wall Street on Parade - Leave it to NBC to remind us that corporate media is tone deaf when it comes to facing up to outrageous conflicts of interest. The final presidential debate before the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary aired last night on NBC and was co-moderated by Lester Holt and Andrea Mitchell. Given the public focus on Hillary Clinton’s financial ties to Wall Street, it was clear that hard-hitting policy questions on reforming Wall Street would need to be asked during the debate.

US Candidates Debate Whether They Are Willing To Commit War Crimes

By Alan Yuhas for The Guardian - Carpet-bombed cities, world war three and internet blockades were among the images conjured up by Republican candidates for president on Tuesday night, as the hopefuls took bellicose rhetoric to new heights over the inconveniences of law and fact. Senator Ted Cruz struck arguably the most overtly belligerent tone of all the candidates, backtracking only slightly from his promise to “carpet bomb” Islamic State militants wherever they are. On Tuesday, he said he would “carpet bomb where Isis is, not a city, but the location of troops” with “directed” air power.

Black Protester Attacked At Trump Rally

By Adam Johnson for Alternet. Birmingham, AL - CNN political reporter Jeremy Diamond posted a video on his Twitter account this afternoon of a black protestor being "shoved, tackled, punched & kicked" at a Donald Trump rally in Birmingham, Alabama. When the Black Lives Matter protestor disrupted the rally, he was met with jeers and ultimately violence, as Trump yelled, "Get him the hell out of here," a command his supporters appear to have taken to heart. According to Diamond, the protestor's chant was also met with "All Lives Matter" counter-chants from some of the rally-goers before they began their assault.

Netanyahu To Meet With Obama, And Center For American Progress

By Max Blumenthal for The Real News - Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton recently penned an op-ed for the Forward, one of the post popular Jewish newspapers in the world. It's titled: How I Would Reaffirm Unbreakable Bond with Israel and Benjamin Netanyahu. The title seems to paint the picture quite clearly of what a Clinton White House would look like. This message comes in the midst of a record number of Palestinian detentions, as violence escalates in Jerusalem. In October alone at least 65 Palestinians have been killed and 2,600 injured. For the same time period, nine Israelis have been killed.
