Maine Students Sit-In Solidarity With DAPL & Protest Maine Pipeline

By Staff of MSCJ - Maine Students for Climate Justice (MSCJ) -- along with a number of allies (including 350 Maine supporters) staged a sit-in at the Public Utilties Commission in Hallowell, Maine on Tuesday, 9/13/16. The action was intended as opposition to the PUC commissioners support of the development of un-natural gas infrastructure on the backs of ratepayers -- negation of their own staff recommendations. Further, the event was developed in solidarity with global actions in support of the Standing Rock Sioux and other Native Americans, in opposition to the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

The Cynical Sit-In

By Keeanga-Yamahtta Taylor for Jacobin Magazine - It’s the season of political antics and this time around, the Democratic Party refuses to be outdone. House Democrats, led by civil rights godfather John Lewis, have staged a sit-in to allow for votes on gun control legislation. Earlier in the week four such measures were rejected, including a bill sponsored by California senator Dianne Feinstein which called for expanding the “Terrorist Identities Datamart Environment,” known more commonly as the “terrorist watchlist.”

Families Of Imprisoned Journalists Begin Open Ended Sit-In

By Staff of Daily News Egypt - Families of imprisoned journalists began an open ended sit-in at the Press Syndicate headquarters on Sunday, according to an announcement on the Facebook page representing the coalition of families. At least 42 journalists are currently in detention, according to the latest Press Syndicate figures, whereas the coalition estimates the number to be around 90 journalists. The families chose Sunday in particular as the start date for the sit-in as it will coincide with a syndicate ceremony celebrating its 75th anniversary.

Okinawa: Sit In At Camp Schwab Passes 500th Day

By Staff of Ryukyu Shimpo - How on earth does one measure the gravity of a single wish, pursued by many people together? On November 18, the sit-in protest in front of the gate of Camp Schwab, Henoko, Nago, by citizens opposing construction of a new U.S. base reached its 500th consecutive day. More than 1,000 people took part in the sit-in on this day. Japanese government officials who have not been to the gates of Camp Schwab before do not know how many hours it will take to go to Henoko. Going on a weekday from the prefectural office, Naha, for example, is nearly impossible.

‘Friendship Nine’ Cleared Of 1961 Civil Rights Sit-In Crimes

Black civil rights protesters credited with reinvigorating the 1960s U.S. sit-in movement were absolved by a South Carolina court on Wednesday of the convictions lodged against them 54 years ago after they dared to sit at a segregated lunch counter. The men, known as the 'Friendship Nine' because most were students at the now-closed Friendship College, knew they would be arrested when they took seats at the popular McCrory's five-and-dime store lunch counter in Rock Hill on Jan. 31, 1961. Found guilty of trespassing, they became the country's first demonstrators to choose to serve jail time rather than pay a fine for sitting at an all-white lunch counter, launching the "jail, no bail" strategy later adopted by other activists.

Die-Ins Breathe Life Into Antiracism Uprising

Last year, inspired by a massive cyclists’ die-in in Amsterdam in the 1970s, 1,000 cyclists staged a die-in in London to call attention to the need for improved road safety. They were asked “to lie on the pavement with your bicycles, turn on your lights and let them flash in the memories of people killed and injured in the last eight years.”Die-ins are a more recent variation. One of the earliest took place on the first Earth Day, April 22, 1970, when Harvard Ecology Action sponsored a die-in at Logan International Airport to protest environmental pollution. In May 1970, 150 demonstrators staged a silent “die-in” in Seattle to protest the shipping of nerve gas through Washington state. In 1981, on International Women’s Day, 3,000 women in Ramstien, West Germany lay down in front of a NATO airbase to simulate the effect of a nuclear attack.

Thousands #FloodWallStreet to Target Climate Profiters

NOOR: So it's about 10:45. We're here down at Bowling Green. You can see the hundreds, if not thousands of people that have gathered behind me. In a few moments, people will be marching from Bowling Green, which is at the southern tip of lower Manhattan, down up to Wall Street. Barricades are already up. But they're going to try to put the bodies on the line and commit acts of civil disobedience to send Wall Street a message. I talked to a few people about why they're taking part in the action. ISHAM CHRISTIE, UNION ORGANIZER: The leaders in this country--the politicians, the economic leaders--aren't going to do anything on climate change unless they're pushed by a lot of people. And yesterday's big march was great. It showed that there was a tremendous amount of support for climate change. But I think we need to sort of take a step further and really hold the institutions, like Wall Street, like the financial sector, accountable for their destruction of the climate.
