A Global Counter-Trump Movement Is Taking Shape

By John Feffer for Foreign Policy In Focus - The American system has been sick to its stomach for some time. Then along comes Donald Trump, America swallows him (hook, line, and sinker), and the system experiences gut-churning convulsions ever since. According to the most hopeful medical prognosis, America will eventually expel Trump from its system and feel so much better afterwards. Reminder: The whole world is watching. How we deal with this president’s fundamentally anti-American policies will have tremendous international ramifications. In fact, the rest of the world is already dealing with the “Trump effect.” After all, while Trump is our emetic, he’s the rest of the world’s smelling salts. Some key countries around the world are already coming to their senses about the threat of dangerous populists. The test cases will be France and Germany. But a progressive backlash appears to be building elsewhere as well.

The New Merchants Of Death

By Jeremy Kuzmarov for ROAR Magazine - In August 2016, the Pentagon announced that Six3 Intelligence Solutions, a private intelligence company recently acquired by California Analysis Center Incorporated (CACI), which was implicated in the Abu Ghraib scandal, had won a $10 million no-bid army contract to provide intelligence analysis services inside Syria. They were to work alongside the roughly three hundred US troops fighting against the so-called Islamic State and to depose Russian-backed Syrian leader Bashir al-Assad. Hiring a company with as checkered a record as CACI is bound to ignite a backlash against US interference within Syria, and may empower the very forces the US is fighting.

With Trump, Resistance Movements Must Bring People Together Beyond Digital Realm

By Anne Kaun for Open Democracy - When I reached over to switch off my alarm on the morning of 9 November, I wished I had stayed asleep. In the few seconds that I searched for the snooze button, my phone’s notifications had revealed that Trump would almost certainly be the president-elect of the US. I was paralysed. Today, I still feel helpless and unable to respond to this threat to the values I believe in. I should have known better, I shouldn’t be depressed, but agitated, ready to protest and mobilize. But I am not. I am still trying to hope that Žižek and other pundits turn out to be right and that this is a deeply disruptive moment that shakes the grounds of representative democracy...

#Earth2Trump: Campaign Kicking Off To Galvanize Resistance

By Andrea Germanos for Common Dreams - Sixteen-city tour will 'rally and empower defenders of civil rights and the environment. Under the banner of #Earth2Trump, a campaign to resist the upcoming administration's "dangerous agenda" is gearing up to take its message nationwide. The "resistance roadshow," spearheaded by the conservation organization Center for Biological Diversity, kicks off Jan. 2, 2017 in Oakland, Calif. and Seattle, and will bring speakers and musicians to 13 other cities before ending on Jan. 20—inauguration day—in Washington, D.C.. It's aimed at "rallying and empowering defenders of civil rights and the environment" to galvanize a network of resistance.

What ‘Star Wars’ Can Teach Climate Movement About Winning

By Cam Fenton for Waging Nonviolence - Right now, there are two forces at play in our world. One of them is swirling into a mess of ecological collapse, rising neo-fascist ideologies and economic instability. The other is the amazing fact that we have new “Star Wars” movies. Maybe these forces don’t seem remotely similar, but — as an organizer who can trace his own history of resistance to an early affinity for the Rebel Alliance — I think there’s an important lesson we need to learn from Han, Luke and Leia in a moment like this: Rebellions win, even against impossible odds, when they fight in unexpected ways. Conversely, they lose when they fight on their opponent’s terms.

Fight Power Inside Resistance Movement Planning To Take On Trump

By Andrew Purcell for The Herald - Tens of thousands of people have taken to the streets of the USA’s cities to protest against Donald Trump’s election. “Not My President” is their rallying cry, but he soon will be, no matter how many more votes Hillary Clinton turns out to have won. A fortnight into the transition, it is already clear how Trump will govern: selfishly, with no restraint or respect for conventions, his primary concerns the accumulation of wealth and the exercise of power.

Awakening Courage In The Era Of Trumpism

By Nozomi Hayase for Common Dreams - American democracy is in deep crisis. As with every election cycle, electoral politics this year failed to provide true therapy for the pathology of the corporate state. There is no diagnosis of unfettered profit-driven capitalism or treatment for the heart failure of the ruling class, which has no ability to feel for the poor and working people. Whether it is Trump or Clinton, candidates are presented as symbols, as a prescribed choice of red or blue, manufactured to keep all addicted to the elite’s power grab contest and blind to the real cause of the illness of our society.

Our Movements Are Powerful, Institutional Left Isn’t The Solution

By Nicole Carty for In These Times - This problem goes far beyond the DNC. Poor leadership on the progressive Left is responsible for Trump. The Left has been celebrating its own intelligence and talking almost only to itself for quite some time now. This has had serious strategic repercussions. It’s created an over-reliance on tools like big data, tech, inside connections, and experts. The Left spends way too little time on what actually politically motivates people: values, feelings, and community.

Demise Of TPP Celebrated By Global Social Movements

By Staff of Tele Sur - Civil society movements across Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and North America announced Tuesday that their seven-year strategic campaign had successfully derailed the Trans-Pacific Partnership, or TPP, a controversial trade deal widely condemned for privileging corporate profits over international public interest.

The Power Of The Movements Facing Trump

By Michael Hardt for ROAR Magazine - It is much too early to say to what extent President Trump will enact his campaign promises as government policy and, indeed, how much he will actually be able to do in office. But every day since his election demonstrations have sprung up throughout the United States to express outrage, apprehension and dismay. Moreover, there is no doubt that once in office Trump and his administration will continually do and say things that will inspire protest.

Newsletter: Solidarity With #NoDAPL Strengthens All Of Us

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. Once again, as happened repeatedly over hundreds of years of struggle by Indigenous Peoples, the United States is using a militarized response against people seeking to protect the land and water and standing up for their human rights and justice. The militarized police are collaborating with oil companies and Indigenous people are having their civil rights trampled. The Water Protectors wrote the Department of Justice telling them about Indigenous drivers being harassed, the police conducting intrusive strip searches for minor offenses like trespass, the use of unlicensed guard dogs against protesters, as well as the use of military vehicles and militarized law enforcement. As Standing Rock Sioux Chairman Dave Archambault wrote “rather than seeking to keep the peace, law enforcement personnel are clearly working in tandem with private security of Dakota Access”who are escalating the conflict with peaceful water protectors.

Why Campaigns, Not Protests, Get The Goods

By George Lakey for Waging Nonviolence. In order to build the kind of power that creates change you need a direct action campaign that harnesses a series of actions into an escalating sequence. Millions of Americans have participated in the past half-century in such campaigns: bus boycotts and lunch counter sit-ins, the Fight for $15, farmworkers, campus divestment campaigns on South African apartheid and fossil fuels, strikes against corporations, impeding mountaintop removal coal mining, blocking the U.S. plan to invade Nicaragua, preventing the completion of the Keystone XL pipeline. Despite this, most Americans don’t understand the difference between a protest and a campaign. Campaigns are very different from protests because they are built for sustainability and escalation. The United States has its own legacy of powerful campaigns and a pool of hard-won skills in our population. It’s time to retire one-off protests, and step up to wins that can lay the foundation of a living revolution.

Making Our Movements Work For Kids And Families

By Frida Berrigan for Waging Nonviolence - In the wake of Keith Lamont Scott's death last month, residents of Charlotte, North Carolina built on their years of organizing against police violence by mobilizing to demand justice and grieve another black man killed by police. As people came together in anger and action, my friend Isabell Moore posted a rather unique message on Facebook directed to her friends participating in the protests. As a white queer activist and mother of a two-and-a-half-year-old in nearby Greensboro, Isabell wanted to know if anyone attending the protests was thinking about child care.

Colombian Victims Of War Greeted By Tens Of Thousands For Peace

By Staff of Tele Sur - Some 3,000 victims and 7,000 Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and rural people are expected to march in Bogota alongside supporters. Tens of Thousands of Colombians again flooded the streets of central Bogota Wednesday in support of Indigenous communities and other victims hit hardest by over 50 years of armed conflict to pressure the government and the country’s largest guerrilla army, the FARC-EP to quickly resolve the political crisis sparked by the recent defeat of the historic peace accords at the polls.

Rise Up: The Game Of People And Power

By Staff of TESA Collective - Lead a march of thousands of people. Write a protest song that goes viral. Fight for what you believe in. Rise Up is a cooperative board game about building people power and taking on oppressive systems to create change. It’s ethically manufactured and made by the creators of Co-opoly: The Game of Cooperatives. In each game of Rise Up, players take creative actions to fight for victory. Everyone wins or loses together.
