US-Backed Coup Deposes Evo Morales In Bolivia

resident Evo Morales has resigned his office in Bolivia, pushed out by a counterrevolutionary coup d’état backed by Washington. After part of the police force joined the counterrevolutionary gangs and the heads of the Armed Forces advised him to resign, Morales took this step as the best of bad choices after consultation with the Bolivian Workers Confederation (COB) and other supporters of his government. 

Max Blumenthal Arrested On False Charges Related To Siege Of Venezuelan Embassy

Max Blumenthal, the editor of the news site The Grayzone, was arrested on the morning of October 25 on a fabricated charge related to the siege of the Venezuelan embassy in Washington, DC that took place between April and May. A team of DC police officers appeared at Blumenthal’s door at just after 9 AM, demanding entry and threatening to break his door down. A number of officers had taken positions on the side of his home as though they were prepared for a SWAT-style raid. Blumenthal was hauled into a police van and ultimately taken to DC central jail, where he was held for two days in various cells and cages. He was shackled by his hands and ankles for over five hours in one such cage along with other inmates.

In reporting the Hong Kong protest movement, the Western media have represented hoodlums as heroes and hooliganism as a movement for democracy. The rioters beat up on innocent bystanders, attacked police with gasoline bombs and sharpened metal rods, destroyed government buildings and metro stations, and interrupted the operations of the international airport. The Hong Kong economy has ground to a halt, yet the media praised the rioters as freedom fighters. In fact, the ringleaders of the riots demanded that the disturbances not be called riots but protests. When the Hong Kong police pushed back on the protesters, the cameras always found them, much less so when the violence was perpetrated by the rioters. Whose idea was this flopped coup, anyway?  Let’s follow the money back to 2010 — the year before Daniel Ortega’s first presidential reelection.  Covert Washington funding, meant to illegally influence foreign elections, began flowing to Nicaragua, in hopes of strengthening candidates opposing Ortega.  But he won by a landslide. By 2014 — the run-up to the next presidential campaign — USAID (under the CIA) was divvying up lots more dough, quietly focusing a more complex project upon largely unwitting Nicaraguans.  The objective, of course, was regime change — however long that might take.

‘Ukrainegate’ Teaches Us More About Ourselves Than Trump Or Biden

'Ukrainegate' has opened the floodgates of impeachment in Washington, DC. President Trump's phone call with Ukrainian President Zelensky provided such an opportunity that Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, who resisted pressure for impeachment, is now on board along with a majority of the party. Democrats are moving quickly to make Trump the third president ever to be impeached. Impeachment by the House seems inevitable even though less than a majority of voters currently support it. The Democrats need to be careful because shining a light on Ukraine, where Obama-Biden conducted the most open coup in US history (until the recent Trump failed coup in Venezuela,) could undermine Joe Biden, their highest polling candidate. It will also expose the ugly realities of US foreign policy, the corporate control of both parties and the need for fundamental change in US politics.

As the United States becomes more brazen and ridiculous in its attempts to stay in control, it is driving other countries to turn away from the US and organize around it. There are growing calls for the United Nations to consider leaving the US and reestablish itself in a location where the US cannot sanction people for its own political purposes. Perhaps there is a need for a new international institution that does not enable US domination. The US' actions point to the need for peace and justice activists to build an international network to demand the upholding the rule of law. Popular Resistance and its allies are contributing to the formation of that transnational solidarity structure through the new Global Appeal for Peace. 

Dialogue In Venezuela Is A Missed Opportunity For Democrats

Missing from the Democratic candidates' stage is the effect these policies have on Venezuelans. These sanctions have killed more than 40,000 people – a figure that comes from economists Mark Weisbrot and Jeffrey Sachs. Venezuelan opposition economist Francisco Rodríguez estimates that “financial sanctions were associated with a decline in [oil] production… [representing] USD 16.9 billion a year in foregone oil revenues.” From the Washington establishment point of view, the sanctions are merely a tool to oust President Maduro, no matter the cost to ordinary Venezuelans.  But while American politicians support sanctions as if they were a nonviolent alternative to boots on the ground, those under their influence know they are a weapon of war normalized by U.S. corporate media.

This Open Letter urges Members of Congress to oppose HR 3289, the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019, which was referred to the Committee on Foreign affairs on June 13th, 2019.  The bill “directs various departments to assess whether political developments in Hong Kong justify changing Hong Kong's unique [i.e. preferential economic and trade] treatment under U.S. law and to determine whether China has eroded Hong Kong's civil liberties and rule of law as protected by Hong Kong's Basic Law.”

The recent turn of events in Hong Kong has further exposed that the protesters have a close relationship with right-wing US politicians and they are being used as a tool in the Great Power Conflict against China, which is a primary focus of US foreign policy. While the people of Hong Kong suffer from uber-capitalism put in place by the British colonizers and a government that has been corporatized by the Hong Kong Basic Law, which requires half the elected legislature represent industry interests, these protests are not a worker-revolt against the serious economic problems faced by Hong Kongers. The overt nature of the protests being a US tool is demonstrated by the protests now focusing on the United States passing the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.

August 21 marks the sixtieth anniversary of Hawaiian statehood. Many Americans know little more than package tours and “Pearl Harbor” about the fiftieth state, and few realize that when the U.S. naval base was attacked by the Japanese, it was not at the time U.S. territory. Even fewer have any idea how Hawaii came to have an important American naval base capable of triggering a world war. Hong Kong is one of the most extreme examples of big finance, neoliberal capitalism in the world. As a result, many people in Hong Kong are suffering from great economic insecurity in a city with 93 billionaires, second-most of any city. Hong Kong is suffering the effects of being colonized by Britain for more than 150 years after the Opium Wars. The British put in place a capitalist economic system and Hong Kong had no history of self-rule. When Britain left, it negotiated an agreement that prevents China from changing Hong Kong's political and economic systems for 50 years by making Hong Kong a Special Administrative Region (SAR). China cannot solve the suffering of the people of Hong Kong. This 'One Country, Two Systems' approach means the extreme capitalism of Hong Kong exists alongside, but separate from, China's socialized system.
