Snowden Leak: NSA Has 50,000 Computer Malware ‘Sleeper Agents’

Sleeper agents are among the most sinister spy assets: they lie in wait, wolves in sheep’s clothing, and then deliver a critical blow when activated. The NSA has 50,000 of those waiting for the literal push of a button, according to the latest batch of leaked Snowden documents, as seen by Dutch daily evening newspaper NRC. But these aren’t people, like Keri Russel and Matthew Rhys in The Americans – these are computers, infected with malware and untroubled by conscience or the risk of going native. The NSA reportedly infected 50,000 computer networks worldwide with malicious software with the sole aim of harvesting sensitive information it wasn’t privy to, which is basically what you’d call textbook spy work in the digital age, from an agency tasked with spying. That’s not to excuse or dismiss the significance of this revelation, but we’ve heard from theWashington Post previously that the NSA was working on this sort of thing and that at least 20,000 computers had been infected by the program as of 2008. So to hear from Snowden documents via the NRC that it’s now climbed to 50,000 is hardly surprising.

Tiny House: A New American Dream

The size of the average American home has more than doubled since the 1950s, but just how big does a home need to be? A Boulder, Colo., couple decided to put that question to the test when they started building their very tiny home -- 124 sq. ft. to be exact -- back in 2011. With no building experience, but with open hearts and minds, Christopher Smith and Merete Mueller started to build their dream home. They documented their surprising journey in a new film called "TINY: A Story About Living Small," which premieres on Al Jazeera America this Sunday. Smith and Mueller recently chatted with The Huffington Post about living tiny, sustainably and redefining the American dream. The Tiny House is about 124 sq ft. It has a living space with an 11-foot ceiling. There is a small galley kitchen, a small bathroom with a composting toilet and camping-style gravity fed shower and a sleeping loft. The main living space has an 11-foot ceiling, which helps the space to feel bigger than it actually is, with a small closet and two built-in bookshelves. There is also a built in desk and dining table that Merete made from scraps left over from our reclaimed hardwood flooring.

Video Catches Constant Police Harassment At Convenience Store

Earl Sampson has been stopped and questioned by Miami Gardens police 258 times in four years. He’s been searched more than 100 times. And arrested and jailed 56 times. Despite his long rap sheet, Sampson, 28, has never been convicted of anything more serious than possession of marijuana. Miami Gardens police have arrested Sampson 62 times for one offense: trespassing. Almost every citation was issued at the same place: the 207 Quickstop, a convenience store on 207th Street in Miami Gardens. But Sampson isn’t loitering. He works as a clerk at the Quickstop. So how can he be trespassing when he works there?

Video: A March Against Drone Warfare In Iowa

In June of 2013 a group of peace activists set out for a walk across Iowa to protest the Predator drone control center planned for the Iowa National Guard Air Base in Des Moines. Beginning at the arms depot at Rock Island Illinois and ending at the National Guard Air Base in Des Moines, the intimate journey of 25 peace pilgrims is documented in the film Walking the Walk: a March Against Drone Warfare. For two weeks and one hundred ninety-five miles, the walkers discuss their mission, their hopes, fears and outrage. Among the walkers are a man just released from prison for attempting to deliver a letter to the commander of a drone base, a businessman who has left a lucrative career to walk and witness for peace, veterans who have witnessed war first hand and a lawyer and former government official deeply concerned with the legality of the United States' drone strike program. In discussions with locals they meet and public presentations in libraries, parks and colleges we hear the issue of armed drone strikes and assassinations discussed in all their ethical complexity.

Video: Tar Sands Battle In Portland, Maine

Fighting Tar Sands In New England ExxonMobil plans to build a toxin-spewing export terminal on the shores of Casco Bay in Maine. According to 350.org: “Such a terminal would allow the flow of millions of gallons of Canadian tar sands to be transported through the region, putting our planet, our local waterways, and community health at unacceptable risk. All evidence indicates that ExxonMobil – the majority owner of the PMPL - wants to pump toxic tar sands oil through New England and South Portland is now a crucial battle line in the fight to stop them. In addition to the climate change risks of tar sands oil production, additional local impacts – with or without with a spill or rupture – would be devastating. As the CCSP says firmly, "The threats that tar sands pose to our environment, health, water supply and air quality are simply unacceptable." “ Asher Platts files this report, which includes an interview with Bob Klotz of 350Maine.org.

#www Reform Is Dead, The Tipping Point Is Near

Reform is the light that never comes. Tyranny reigns. Revolution is all we have left... This video was created in support of the Anonymous call for a Worldwide Wave of Action ~ #www. There has been an anonymous call for a “crowd sources worldwide wave of action #www” this spring. #www has been put out and is gaining traction. #www challenges “the corporate controlled state and its paradigm that now preys on the resources and spirits of people.” We see that the “tipping point is near” for the “decentralized movement” that is “raging across the world.” The call is for a “Worldwide Wave of Transformation” over a three-month “massive spring offense.” Here are several sites that have reposted the original call to action: EvolveSociety http://evolvesociety.org/feature/a-ca... Governments Fail On Climate Change — Again

In what should be another colossal embarrassment for the United States- recently leaked internal documents show how little our government is prepared to take responsibility for the damage done by climate change, the negative effects of which are caused by our hyper capitalist culture of consumption without consequence. There are two things at play here. One is setting limits and playing a chess game over who will pay for the climate change damage that will come – and disproportionally affect less developed countries that have not the means to defend themselves from human induced climate change or contribute to the conditions that will harm or kill them The other thing at play, the Giant Pink Elephant in the room that our world leaders can’t seem to deal with is the reality, as outlined in a study by the Global Carbon Project, of a 4 or 6 degree Celsius increase in global temperatures that could mark a significant and perhaps final chapter in the story of our species.

“Nature Does Not Negotiate”: Environmentalists Walk Out of UN Climate Summit

As we began our show, hundreds of environmental activists walked out of the U.N. climate change summit in Warsaw, Poland, today over the absence of a binding agreement on curbing global warming. The move comes less than 36 hours after a group of 133 developing nations walked out of a key negotiating meeting amidst a conflict over how countries who have historically emitted the most greenhouse gases should be held financially responsible for some of the damage caused by extreme weather. "Our message to our political leaders is that nature does not negotiate," says Greenpeace Executive Director Kumi Naidoo. "You can’t change the science — we have to change political will."

UN Defends Banning Three Activists & Fossil Fuel Firms Sponsoring Climate Talks

During a press conference, Democracy Now!'s Amy Goodman questioned U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon about whether he would consider banning fossil fuel industry lobbyists from U.N. climate meetings in the same way the World Health Organization has banned tobacco lobbyists from meetings on tobacco regulation. Ban responded: "We need to engage all areas of industry and society in the transition to a low-carbon future, including industries that are presently associated with high greenhouse gas emissions." Goodman also asked Christiana Figueres, the executive secretary of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change, whether she would allow three youth activists who protested the influence of corporate lobbyists to be re-admitted to the this year's climate summit after they were stripped of their badges.

Nine Of Greenpeace’s Arctic 30 Activists Released On Bail

A court in St Petersburg, Russia, has released nine of the Arctic 30 Greenpeace protesters charged with piracy on bail. The activists, arrested on board the Arctic Sunrise ship, will be released once their bail sums are paid by Greenpeace. They will have to return to Russia if requested by investigators. Since there arrest two months ago and initially being charged with piracy, now with hooliganism, there has been an international campaign seeking their release. Another member of the Arctic 30 is being held until February, at least: "This morning a judge at St Petersburg’s Primorskiy courthouse ruled that Australian Colin Russell must remain in jail until February 24 while the investigation into a protest continues. A request for bail or house arrest was denied." Below is a video of Colin Russell in court. Greenpeace writes about his appearance "Colin Russell delivers a powerful speech to media during his detention hearing at Primorskiy Court in St. Petersburg. The Russian Investigative Committee is applying to keep the detainees in prison for a further three months while they investigate their alleged crimes."

Calle 13, Julian Assange, Tom Morello & Kamilya Jubran

Calle 13, one of Latin America's most popular bands, released a new song this week featuring an unlikely collaborator -- WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The song, "Multi_Viral," also features Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and the Palestinian singer Kamilya Jubran. To create the lyrics, Calle 13 lead singer and songwriter René Pérez, better known as "Residente," asked followers on Twitter to express their social justice concerns in a live brainstorming session with Assange. This is not the first time Calle 13 has made headlines for its political work. In 2005, the group quickly recorded and released a song about Puerto Rican independence leader Filiberto Ojeda Ríos just hours after he was shot dead by the FBI. They have called for the release of independence activist Oscar López Rivera, who has spent more than 32 years in jail, and have spoken out about police brutality and government spying. His group has won a record 19 Latin Grammy Awards.

VIDEO: Resistance Report – Jeremy Hammond Case And More

Anonymous hacker and activist Jeremy Hammond was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Friday. Among the services Hammond provided to those of us seeking to fight back against the security and surveillance state included key evidence in the civil suit brought by Christopher Hedges and Alexa O’Brien against Barack Obama over Section 1021 of the National Defense Authorization Act. In his sentencing statement, Hammond said: “The acts of civil disobedience and direct action that I am being sentenced for today are in line with the principles of community and equality that have guided my life. I hacked into dozens of high profile corporations and government institutions, understanding very clearly that what I was doing was against the law, and that my actions could land me back in federal prison. But I felt that I had an obligation to use my skills to expose and confront injustice—and to bring the truth to light."
