By Cassius Methyl for Era of Wisdom - Activist group New Era Detroit took thousands of bottles of water to Flint, Michigan on Sunday, successfully providing residents with clean drinking water in the face of an unprecedented water contamination disaster. Flint residents have been afflicted with the choices of drinking highly toxic water, not drinking water, or seeking water elsewhere as the people who created the problem have yet to offer an effective solution. Toxic lead was found in residents’ blood a month ago.

Climate Game Awards were used as a tool to inspire strategic action and encourage community building. When it comes to Game Day, athletes are warriors whose acrobatic actions on the court or field are revered by millions, emulated by children, lionized in living rooms and bars. Their faces are on clothing, their likenesses on video games. But when it comes to Election Day, or any other day that involves expressing personal opinions about social or political issues, athletes are relegated to a locker room ghetto and told to keep their politics as private as a jock strap. Financially, mixing sports and politics is bad for business. Fans want to indulge in the escapism of the sport without the heavy baggage of real life interfering.

Why Oil Train Activists In Seattle Took Direct Action

Five residents from the Seattle area took direct action on September 2 and constructed a massive tripod that blocked trains transporting crude oil through a rail yard in Everett, Washington. The action was organized by the environmental action group, Rising Tide North America, and was initiated to call attention to the need to halt the transport of crude oil, which is at risk of explosions. All five individuals were arrested and face misdemeanor charges for putting their bodies on the line. Yet, they recognized that working to push elected officials to act by going through the standard political processes was not enough anymore. They hope other Americans come to this realization as well and learn they may need to make a bit of a sacrifice to ensure a survivable future on Earth. This week’s guests on the “Unauthorized Disclosure” podcast are Liz Spoerri, an assistant middle school teacher who has organized with environmental groups, and Patrick Mazza, a veteran climate activist who has been organizing for the last 15 years. Both Spoerri and Mazza were a part of the direct action they took against oil trains. They each share why they took the action and why they feel it is important for others, to take direct action as well.

The Annual Hiroshima Day Sackcloth and Ashes Peace Vigil at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Aug 2nd, 2104. Participants are wearing some of the the oldest symbols of protest: sackcloth and sitting on ashes while repenting of the mortal sin of nuclear weapons. Sitting in meditation, wearing the traditional symbols of repentance and protest, peace activists took a moment to acknowledge the suffering cause by nuclear weapons. The Peace Vigil takes place in Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the nuclear bomb was invented.

On July 18, thousands of activists and dozens of organizations will converge in downtown Detroit to protest the privatization of the city's assets, and the disconnection of water to tens of thousands of low-income residents - what the UN has called a human rights violation. Demonstrators from around the country will come to rally in Hart Plaza at 1 PM to link arms with the citizens of Detroit to protest the hostile corporate takeover by Wall Street banks and their radical ALEC-led political allies in the Michigan Statehouse. The activist community of Detroit put out this call for help: We call on activists everywhere to come to Detroit on Friday, July 18 for a rally and march to fight the dictatorship of Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr, appointed by millionaire Republican Governor Rick Snyder, and backed by Wall Street bankers and the 1%. Under a state-imposed bankruptcy, the City of Detroit workers face severe cuts to their pensions and tens of thousand people face water shut-offs.

Every night when Egyptian activist Mohamed Kamel goes home, there is a man outside his building who follows him until he enters the doorway. The figure doesn't speak; he doesn't leave his post. He just keeps watch. "I smile at him and tell him, 'Please do come up and have dinner with me,'" said the 38-year-old, Cairo-based high school manager. "What else can I do?" Kamel is part of April 6 Youth Movement, a revolutionary group founded in 2008 to support striking industrial workers. Its members, estimated by the organization to number in the tens of thousands, were also a driving force behind the 2011 revolution that toppled Hosni Mubarak. But now, despite having supported the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, the group finds itself under fire from the military-backed government in Cairo. Last week, an Egyptian court outlawed the movement after a lawsuit accused it of espionage and tainting the image of the state. The group's most prominent voices, meanwhile, have been thrown in jail. In December, founder Ahmed Maher, 32, and Mohamed Adel, 25, were sentenced to three years in prison for participating in an illegal rally and allegedly assaulting a police officer.
