Refugee Caravan: Where Are The Nicaraguans?

By the time this blog is published, the results of the US midterm elections will be known. I’m willing to bet now that if the Democrats hoped-for “Blue Wave” does not materialize, their number one scapegoat will be the caravan of refugees from Central America which is slowly crossing Mexico. I have been astounded at the number of people, even people who in the past have been solidarity activists, who think that the desperate families escaping State violence in Honduras, later joined by Guatemalans and Salvadorans escaping gang violence and drought, should time their flight to safety according to the US electoral calendar. Until President Trump publicized the caravan that began as a couple hundred people in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, few in the US were aware of it.

Is There Really A ‘Militia Caravan’ Traveling South To Protect US Border From Marching Migrants?

Most media outlets have published as fact claims that vigilante groups incited by Donald Trump are organizing themselves to confront the migrant caravan, but the story appears to be based on little more than an unverified boast. Variously named as “armed militias” and “far right activists,” some “gun-toting” groups have been reported as “forming their own caravan” in scores of media reports over the weekend, from the Huffington Post to The Hill in the US to international outlets such as the UK’s the Sun, Turkey’s Anadolu, and Russia’s Sputnik. The vigilantes are reportedly equipped with military-level tech, and will form units hundreds-strong. They have caused alarm among both local residents – afraid that their land will be invaded– and the army contingent forced to separate sides.

Armed Militia Groups Head To The Border, Sparking Military Concerns

Armed bands of civilian militia members are traveling to the southern U.S. border, where President Donald Trump has ordered thousands of active-duty troops to rebuff the approaching migrant caravan. About “200 unregulated armed militia members [are] currently operating along the southwest border,“ says a planning document for Army commanders leading the 5,200 troops Trump has deployed at the border, according to Newsweek. The groups “operate under the guise of citizen patrols supporting” border officials, the document says, pointing out “reported incidents of unregulated militias stealing National Guard equipment during deployments.”

Chicanos Welcome Central American Caravan

Los Angeles, CA – On October 26, as the caravan of refugees from Central America traveled through Mexico, they were welcomed with food, festivity, aid, and clothing. As Chicanos, we must do the same when the caravan arrives at U.S. border. Attacking Mexicans, and by extension Chicanos, Trump has dispatched the U.S. military to the U.S.-Mexico border to block the caravan. We say down with Trump, down with him hiding like a coward behind the U.S. military, down with the continued militarization, killings and abuses at the border, down with the injustices to the undocumented in the U.S., and down with the U.S. destabilization of Central America. We must demand legalization for all current 11 million undocumented people in the U.S., and asylum now for the caravan refugees when they arrive at the border.

Your Commander-in-Chief Is Lying To You: Veterans Issue Open Letter To Active Duty US Soldiers

Your Commander-in-chief is lying to you. You should refuse his orders to deploy to the southern U.S. border should you be called to do so. Despite what Trump and his administration are saying, the migrants moving North towards the U.S. are not a threat. These small numbers of people are escaping intense violence. In fact, much of the reason these men and women—with families just like yours and ours—are fleeing their homes is because of the US meddling in their country’s elections. Look no further than Honduras, where the Obama administration supported the overthrow of a democratically elected president who was then replaced by a repressive dictator.

Mexico Offers ‘You Are Home’ Human Rights Plan To Migrants

In light of the unprecedented flow of people from Central American countries who have entered the last few days through the southern border, President Enrique Peña Nieto today announced the "You are at home" Plan whose main objective is to provide work options temporary while their immigration status is resolved. Mexico is a country that values and recognizes the dignity of migrants, regardless of their migratory status, as well as their contributions to the economic, social and cultural development of the countries of destination, transit, origin and return. The "You are in your house" plan consists of two main components...

US Imperialism Is Responsible For Central American Migration

The Central American Caravan a result of the continued interventionist policies of U.S. imperialism, which considers this region to be its “backyard.” The forms of U.S. intervention are many: U.S.-funded wars and military interventions, coups d’état, “free trade” agreements (which are another form of warfare against workers and oppressed peoples), plundering of resources, dismantling of national economies, violations of the sovereignty of the peoples. This is what has caused hundreds of thousands of people to leave their places of origin to seek a better future

AMLO Speaks Up For Rights Of Honduran Migrants Caravan

The President-elect of Mexico Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) will ask the governments of the United States and Canada to allocate resources to boost development in Central America which he says would help control migratory crises like the one that pushed thousands of Hondurans to leave their country last week for the U.S. "I am proposing to President Donald Trump that an agreement can be made so that Canada, the United States, and Mexico invest in the development of the Southeast and the Central American countries. We are willing to devote resources to that plan, and Americans and Canadians should do the same," AMLO said Sunday when he traveled to Tuxtla Gutierrez in Chiapas.

Journalists Say Trump’s Caravan Claims Are ‘Evidence-Free.’ It’s Worse Than That.

Reporters know the president is telling racist lies to rile up his base. Why won’t they just say that? As the GOP’s fears of a progressive wave in November grow, Donald Trump has made it his personal mission to make everyone else afraid, too. Over the past few week’s he’s been telling evermore fantastical tales of dangerous riffraff inching their way up to the U.S. border. In reality, there is a caravan of Honduran migrants — fleeing violence and economic strife so bad that they’d risk our own horrific family separation policies — making its way through Mexico. Traveling in the thousands has helped protect the group from the usual dangers of border-crossing, like getting lost or robbed on the way. Meanwhile, the media has been reporting on Trump’s response.

Apache Stronghold Caravan Saving Sacred Site From Mining Giant

By Albert Bender in People's World - The San Carlos Apache community association, Apache Stronghold, held a rally on June 30 in Tucson, Ariz., to save Oak Flat, a sacred site in the Tonto National Forest that is endangered by a planned copper mine of a goliath mining company. On July 5, Apache Stronghold began a long caravan trek from Tucson to Washington, D.C. stopping at cities and reservations nationwide to gather support and to request the federal government to support the Save Oak Flat Act, a bill introduced by Arizona congressman, Raul Grijalva, in mid-June. The Tucson rally was organized by the Indigenous Alliance Without Borders and Tucson Supports Oak Flat to support Apache Stronghold's efforts to save the sacred site from destruction by a mining mammoth.
