Newsletter: People Power Essential To Saving Planet

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers for Popular Resistance. The climate crisis leads to the inevitable conclusion that our job is to turn the climate crisis into a political crisis that forces the corruption of the oil and gas industry into the open and shames governments for their failure to act on an urgent situation that threatens life on the planet as we know it. The failure of the political and economic systems to respond as quickly and strongly as needed puts the responsibility on people to resist oil and gas exploration, carbon infrastructure and continued reliance on dirty energy that is destroying the planet. The reality we face justifies resistance and disobedience to do all we can to slow or stop the use of carbon energy, heighten debate on the reality of the climate crisis and bring climate justice to the forefront of political thought.

Climate Democracy For Rural Communities

By Anna Claussen for Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy. There is a common misconception that you can’t talk about climate change in rural communities because the issue is considered too polarizing. Many would likely wage a bet that a climate discussion would paralyze Winona residents, divide them, and lead to more finger pointing than hand holding. But not here. Despite their differing viewpoints, the 18 participants in the Winona County Climate Dialogue produced a collective statement and action plan, crafted solely using participant input, based on six topical presentations from local experts on weather trends, energy use, water, insurance, public health and agriculture in Winona County. The Winona plan acknowledged that climate change “will have a real measurable impact on our overall economy, our environment, fish and wildlife habitat, health, insurance rates and more. Individually and as Winona County” they deemed that “they needed to take action by working together to prepare for the future.”

Rubber Stamp Rebellion Targets FERC & The Corporations It Serves

By Beyond Extreme Energy for Popular Resistance. Starting Monday, May 16, Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE) will spend the week carrying out creative, non-violent actions throughout the Washington, D.C., area. We’ll be targeting the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and the fossil fuel industry whose projects that rogue agency approves. We’ll be at the headquarters of FERC, 888 First St. NE, Washington, D.C., where the agency rubber stamps approvals for interstate fracked gas pipelines, export terminals and other infrastructure that is destroying local communities and super-charging the climate crisis. We’ll be visiting the four FERC commissioners at their homes to hold them accountable for their decisions and we will be acting in concert with frontline communities.

Civil Disobedience Is Only Way Left To Fight Climate Change

By Kara Moses for The Guardian - Right now, thousands of people are taking direct action as part of a global wave of protests against the biggest fossil fuel infrastructure projects across the world. We kicked off earlier this month by shutting down the UK’s largest opencast coal mine in south Wales. Last Sunday, around 1,000 people closed the world’s largest coal-exporting port in Newcastle, Australia and other bold actions are happening at power stations, oil refineries, pipelines and mines everywhere from the Philippines, Brazil and the US, to Nigeria, Germany and India.

Climate Disobedience And New “Public Trust” Laws Of Nature

By Ted Hamilton for Truthout - If you think there's something odd about the US committing itself to at least a 26 percent reduction in greenhouse gases by 2025 even while federally owned landsproduce a quarter of the nation's fossil fuel energy, you just might be a believer in an old legal concept: the public trust doctrine. This ancient idea, applied since Roman days, is pretty straightforward: The government has an affirmative duty to protect natural resources that are shared by everybody.

Study Reveals How To Cut Carbon Emissions By 100M Tons

By Marissa Knodel for Friends Of The Earth - The Keep It in the Ground campaign has built a powerful movement demanding climate action. By standing strong against the sale of public lands and waters to fossil fuel empires, activists have shined a spotlight on fossil fuel leasing and helped delay and shutter new projects. The question that has been asked about the campaign is whether keeping fossil fuels in the ground in the United States can actually reduce the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Fort Mac Fire And Feel-Good Boosterism For Extractive Industry

By Nora Loreto and Sarah Beuhler for Rabble - It's been inescapable: the emotion that rises each time another story crosses the screen about the wildfires in Alberta is enough to occupy any free, thinking part of a brain and burst an already full chamber of a heart. Especially when we think about 90,000 people fleeing a Canadian city because of a climate emergency. And the workers: the ones who have lost everything and the ones who haven't but who sleep on cots in camps.

Break Free From Fossil Fuels Worldwide Momentum

By Break Free for Popular Resistance, Over the last week, a global wave of actions to keep fossil fuels in the ground has been gathering momentum all over the world. Words alone are not enough to describe how powerful this moment of action is. If you’ve missed any of it, here’s what’s happened so far in just the first 6 days of Break Free. . . Over the last week, a global wave of actions to keep fossil fuels in the ground has been gathering momentum all over the world. Words alone are not enough to describe how powerful this moment of action is. If you’ve missed any of it, here’s what’s happened so far in just the first 6 days of Break Free. The next few days will be incredible too -- not least because together these actions set the stage for the just transition to 100% renewable energy that this overheating planet needs.

Right To Breathe Rally Rejects Becoming Dirty Energy Hub

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — The Port Authority is considering six different plans for developing a piece of land near the Navy Yard, called Southport. It’s a hot-button issue for residents, because one proposals involves the expansion of an oil refinery, and Saturday, they staged a protest. Long-time Kingsessing resident Doreen says she is standing with activists and leaders to oppose the refinery expansion. “I’ve been having respiratory problems for a few years now, and I know this is a part of it,” Doreen said. She is one of hundreds who came out to 28th Street and Passyunk Ave, to march with signs and sunflower cutouts. “We do not need anymore pollutants in this city,” she said. Maxine has lived in the neighborhood for nearly 50 years, and says her family has suffered breathing problems from the already standing fossil fuels companies, burning near her home.

Newsletter: Living In A Post-2011 World

By Kevin Zeese and Margaret Flowers. The 2016 election has deepened the understanding of how out of step the establishment political parties are with the people of the United States. The parties have reinforced the rationale for the Occupy uprising, and the uprisings on racism, inequality, poverty wages, mistreatment of students and more that have occurred since 2011; and they have increased national consensus on the dysfunction and corruption of government, the unfairness and inequity of the economy and the lack of concern for the environment and climate change.Don't Represent US In order to understand the election's relationship to the movement for economic, racial and environmental justice, we need to understand that the roots of this election come from the uprising of 2011. As Paolo Gerbaudo wrote in ROAR Magazine: "The 2011 protest wave will forever be associated with the slogan 'they don’t represent us' — a clear indictment of the present form of representative politics and the existing political class."

A Growing And WINNING Climate Movement

By Lena Moffitt for Sierra Club - The growing rallying cry of the climate movement, to keep fossil fuels in the ground, is taking hold, and not just in the form of chants and headlines, but in the form of cancelled gas pipelines, rejected LNG terminals, shelved lease sales – all of which would’ve perpetuated the fossil fuel status quo, but which faced mounting and unprecedented public opposition. Emboldened by the successful campaign against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline and motivated by the growing scientific consensus that we must keep at least 80% of fossil fuel reserves in the ground

Break Free: Largest Civil Disobedience In Environmental Movement History

By Break Free for Popular Resistance: Break Free is an unprecedented global mobilisation from May 4-15, 2016 - a movement and a global call for action - to leave fossil fuels in the ground. A global wave of peaceful direct actions will take place across six continents targeting the world’s most dangerous fossil fuel projects, in order to keep coal, oil and gas in the ground. The aim is to demonstrate the global resolve to break free from the shackles of polluting fuels to build a new kind of economy that works for people and the planet, and accelerate the just transition to 100% renewable energy. People worldwide are providing the much needed leadership by intensifying actions through peaceful civil disobedience on a global scale as so much remains to be done in order to lessen the effects of the climate crisis. This includes demanding governments move past the commitments made as part of the Paris agreement signed last month.

Youth Secure Second Win In Climate Trust Litigation

By Andrea Rodgers for Our Children's Trust - Seattle, WA – Today, in a surprise ruling from the bench in the critical climate case brought by youths against the State of Washington's Department of Ecology (“Ecology”), King County Superior Court Judge Hollis Hill ordered Ecology to promulgate an emissions reduction rule by the end of 2016 and make recommendations to the state legislature on science-based greenhouse gas reductions in the 2017 legislative session. Judge Hill also ordered Ecology to consult with the youth petitioners in advance of that recommendation.

McKibben Responds To Right Wing Plan To Target Climate Activists

By Bill McKibben for 350.org - According to The Hill, America Rising is pouring an “unprecedented” amount of resources into a campaign usually reserved for only the most high-profile Democratic targets. America Rising and associated groups are using their immense research and tracking infrastructure intended to take down Hillary Clinton to now target Bill McKibben, Tom Steyer, and others in the climate movement. This is not the first time right-wing operatives allied with the fossil fuel industry have directly targeted McKibben, 350.org, and other climate justice activists.
