O-Week To Activists: Your Presence Not Welcome

While all of this is undoubtedly concerning, what’s especially troubling to me is the groups that Western does allow to disseminate information on campus during O-Week. To name a few: in the UCC this week, both Rogers and Bell had booths set up with aggressive marketers handing out information, hungry for student commitment; when receiving our new bus passes, students are handed promotional flyers, specifically marketing commercial services to Western students; both the Westernizer and the “Frosh Issue” of The Gazette are inundated with commercial advertisements; and at the upcoming Midway Carnival, promotional booths and free corporate products will create an orgy of consumer spectacle for likely intoxicated frosh, in effect transforming students into consumers and O-Week into a perverse carnival of capitalism (which, as we all know, can be an all too seductive ride).

Upcoming Protests At Bath Iron Works

There are going to be two protests at Bath Iron Works (BIW) here in Maine during the month of October. The first will be on Saturday, October 5 from 11:30 am to 12:30. That vigil will be part of Keep Space for Peace Week and will be held on Washington Street in Bath. The second, and likely larger protest, will be held on Saturday, October 19 during the "christening" of the Navy's first Zumwalt class "stealth" destroyer, DDG-1000. This protest will come at the end of the Maine Drone Peace Walk and will be from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and will be held on the corner of Washington Street and Hinckley Street. Just across the street from this spot many people will be lining up to enter BIW for the "christening" ceremony. Yes indeed it is a sacrilege and presumptuous to give the blessing of Christ (the Prince of Peace) to a first-strike killing warship.

Why Syria? A Story Of Competing Pipelines

Syria is already part of a Western-ordained gas pipeline that spans from Egypt to Homs. This pipeline, known as the Arab Gas Pipeline, was originally planned to continue traveling north of Homs up into Turkey. From there, it can be piped into Europe. The major players of this Western approved pipeline include Saudi Arabia and Qatar, among other Gulf nations. Syrian President Assad has since rejected the Arab Gas Pipeline and has instead begun working closely with Iran on Iran’s proposed gas pipeline, dubbed the Islamic Pipeline. This proposed pipeline would obviously compete directly with the Arab Gas Pipeline and its goal of delivering Mideast natural gas to Europe.

26 Years After Murder Attempt, US Vet Still Openly Opposes War

The pattern of US history built on massive exploitation outsourcing the consequent pain and suffering out of our feeling field, out of our view, still remains unspeakable. Yet it is cracking, as the Occupy Movement represented, and the repressive crackdown of that movement revealed how terrified the system is of people power emerging outside the claustrophobic box. The revelations forcing dreaded transparency by acts such as those of Bradley (Chelsea) Manning and Edward Snowden show how really unbearable is truth to the system since it has always operated on the lie, on pretend. Pretty incredible. I celebrate 26 years of surviving a murder attempt that has left me walking upright on two prostheses, a plate in my skull protecting my damaged frontal lobe, with the grand opportunity of now having arm-powered myself more than 65,000 miles on handcycle. Today, Becky and I cycled to the rally against bombing Syria where we were inspired as we met many Syrians and other young people who totally get the lie.

TPP Is Job-Killing Trade Deal With Bipartisan Support

“On health care, on transportation, on abortion, on just about any significant policy issue, the Republicans and Democrats are at a complete stalemate,” said Auggie Tantillo, a strategic consultant to the National Council of Textile Organizations, a lobbying group dedicated to the welfare of the U.S. textile industry. “On trade, there is an odd and convenient bipartisanship. You have these huge retailers and importers that are supporting the TPP on both sides of the aisle.” Curt Ellis, communications director for the American Jobs Alliance, put it more bluntly: “Both Democrats and Republicans have been captured by the financial elite on Wall Street and are doing their bidding. Both parties are collaborating on the economic destruction of this country,” he says. “We can expect [U.S. House Speaker John] Boehner to hold Obama’s hand as they push us over the cliff.”

To Stop War, Stop The Banks: Move Your Money

We believe that an attack on Syria would not proceed without the approval of the heads of the major banks and that de-funding of these banks to stop US military action in Syria is an appropriate response that addresses basic power relationships related to war. In the face of this, we urge that on Sept. 1, 2013 you begin to remove your money from these largest banks and deposit it in a local credit union, or if this is not possible, a smaller bank or in "Banco de Mattress". Below is an example of how banks are tied into US military adventures and why our best strategy appears be to go directly where the money is. The board of directors of Lockheed Martin has two members, ex-military men, who are officials in The Cohen Group, formed by ex-Defense Secretary William Cohen to "provide global business consulting services and advice on tactical and strategic opportunities in virtually every market".

VIDEO: Military Cancer

Class War Films tells the history of militarism in the US and how it will devour us as a cancer devours the body if it is not stopped: "You understand what a cancer is: a voracious wildly self-replicating rogue cell mass that feeds on and devours its host....The US military with its vast complex web of branches, agencies and bureaucracies is in socio-political terms a metastasized cancer run rampant in the American body politic and we Americans are dying of it. Not surprising. The core purpose of armies is to kill people. Every country that has ever had one claimed it was for self-defense, but all history has proved their function has never varied to kill people and appropriate their wealth."

Hatred, Division, & Perpetual Wars: When Will We Ever Learn?

It is no longer a question of if the everyday ordinary people of this nation will untangle and throw off our chains. Rather, it is a matter of when and how this will be done by the people from the bottom up. Some people are increasingly beginning to seriously awaken – but awakening – while absolutely necessary, is simply not enough. Perhaps the real question is, when will the people of this nation decide that enough is enough – and what will they do about it? It is time for uncompromising systemic change. When will we ever learn? The fact is that we are learning. And with our understanding comes an urgency and a responsibility to ourselves, each other, this nation, and the peoples of Mother Earth.

Next Disaster? Tar Sands Sludge Threatens Africatown, AL

Residents and others fear that the tar sands would be shipped from the Blakely Island storage tanks through a more than thirty-year old pipeline that runs under Africatown, Prichard and other communities - and just behind Africatown’s Mobile Training School – to Plains' Ten Mile Terminal, then out to the Chevron refinery in Pascagoula, MS through a controversial Plains Southcap pipeline, currently under construction. Plains Southcap was granted its federal permit by the US Army Corp of Engineers, which the Alabama Public Service Commission (AL-PSC) also approved, with virtually no public input. The pipeline route runs through several wetlands and twice crosses the Escatawpa River after traveling through the watershed of Big Creek Lake, the Mobile area’s only source of drinking water. Jarrod White, attorney for Plains Southcap says the pipeline currently under construction is “not designed to carry tar sand oil”, but despite several inquiries, the company has yet to explain what about this particular pipeline’s construction makes it different from one that is designed to carry tar sand oil.

At Least 163 House Members Say Obama Needs Approval From Congress On Syria

More than 100 lawmakers, including 16 Democrats, have signed a letter that says President Obama would violate the Constitution by striking Syria without first getting authorization from Congress. A total of 107 lawmakers had signed the letter as of 3 p.m. Wednesday, highlighting bipartisan interest and growing momentum in ensuring a role for Congress in any decision to use force in Syria. “Engaging our military in Syria when no direct threat to the United States exists and without prior congressional authorization would violate the separation of powers that is clearly delineated in the Constitution,” states the letter, spearheaded by Rep. Scott Rigell (R-Va.).

“They Fear Us Because We Are Fearless”: Reclaiming Indigenous Lands In Honduras

Multinational corporations are moving into Central America to exploit gold and other minerals, rivers, forests, and agricultural lands. One area of high interest in the corporate feeding frenzy is the indigenous Lenca region in the southwest of Honduras. The government has given outside businesses concessions to dam, drill, and cut, in violation of national law and international treaties. More corporations have simply moved in on their own. The most pressing issue now affecting Lenca lands is a series of large hydroelectric dams which are already under construction. They are part of 41 dam concessions which may soon come under active exploitation. The concessions came thanks to a mining law passed in January 2013 by a national congress that was voted in under an illegal government that took power in the 2009 coup d’etat. The law allows for open pit mining as well as mining in populated areas, which opens the door for large-scale displacement.

Get Out Of Big Banks Now!

In other words, you may walk into your bank one day and instead of getting cash for a withdrawal request, you will receive a stock certificate and it will be your responsibility to convert it to cash. This legal seizure of your money will most likely happen in just one night in a process called “overnight sweeps.” Bottom line – you immediately need to move all your funds from big banks to other institutions or investments. Assets in J.P. Morgan Chase and Bank of America are especially vulnerable. Sound unbelievable? Doubt this could actually happen? Think again – it already has. In March 2013, Cypress became the first nation to experience this new policy formally referred to as “Resolving Globally Active, Systemically Important, Financial Institutions" (translation – procedure to save big banks in lieu of a government-taxpayer Bail-Out).

Be Wary – AFL-CIO Joins Effort To Stop The TPP

Corporations are trying to manipulate the Trans-Pacific Partnership—a free trade agreement being negotiated right now that would be bigger than NAFTA—to increase their power over the global economy, so they have a say in everything from your rights at work to the prices of your prescriptions and the safety of your child’s toys. Watch the video below to learn more and share it with your friends. Then send an email to trade representatives for all the countries involved to tell them to create a trade agreement that works for working families.

The March On Washington, Then And Now

We in the antiwar movement look not only to the inspiring “I have a dream” speech that King gave in Washington in 1963, but also to his famous speech at Riverside Church in New York. In that speech, King came out strongly against the Vietnam War. He was warned by other civil rights leaders and Democratic Party politicians not to do it; they told him it would hurt the civil rights movement. But Martin Luther King came to understand that in order for Blacks and all people to advance, you must confront the “giant triplets of racism, materialism and militarism.” So he did just that, and he was killed for it. But King’s Riverside speech seems to have been forgotten as we rally today on the 50th anniversary of the 1963 march. The planners found no room on the platform to talk about war. Though King himself was a victim of FBI spying, they found no room to denounce the NSA spaying or the attacks on Muslims, or Guantanamo or Chelsea (Bradley) Manning or anything that might embarrass the Democratic Party.
