As We Protest Incoming President Trump, Let’s Not Play Political Ping Pong

By Thomas S. Harrington for Common Dreams - I would love to share, my liberal friend, in your sense of incredulity about the election of Donald Trump to the presidency of United States. I would love to stand with you in the sense of woundedness that, while certainly painful up front, carries with it the secondary compensation of a warm and nurturing solidarity. I would love to sit with you and fulminate in righteous anger about the unparalleled vulgarity and cruelty of Trump and his followers. As much as I’d like to do these things, I won’t. Why? Because I know you, perhaps better than you even dare to know yourself.

Disrupting The Inauguration: A #J20 Update

By Staff of DC Indy Media - From January 14-16, we’ll be organizing a series of trainings and workshops to get people ready for the upcoming actions, and to deepen our analysis and understanding of what is truly at stake under a Trump administration, how we can resist, and what we’re building towards. There will be in-depth Nonviolent Direct Action trainings, Self-Defense, Street Safety, and De-escalation trainings, Know Your Rights trainings, and many more. If you’d like to propose a workshop or training on either action or organizing skills, theory, or history, click here to fill out a quick submission form. We also want to create space for everyone who wants to protest to be able to participate safely.

Bad Narratives Going Forward In The Age Of Trump

By Paul Street for Counter Punch - The accommodation makes perfect sense. Janus-faced finance capital runs like water to the powers that be at the end of the day. The elite financial sector is looking forward to significant regressive corporate and personal tax cuts and financial deregulation with Republicans in charge of both the White House and Congress in coming years. The stocks of Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley have been on a great run ever since the election. And Trump has given current and former Goldman Sachs elites and other top finance-capitalists (including coming Commerce Secretary and noted billionaire Wilbur Ross) numerous key economic policy positions in his coming administration.

In The Time Of Trump, All We Have Is Each Other

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - This Christmas I mourn the long, slow death of our democracy that led to the political ascendancy of Donald Trump. I fear the euphoria of those who have embraced the atavistic lust for violence and bigotry stoked by him. These nativist forces, part of the continuum of white vigilante violence directed against people of color and radical dissidents throughout American history, are once again being groomed as instruments of mass intimidation and perhaps terror. I know that our civil and political institutions, poisoned by neoliberalism and captured by the corporate state, have neither the will nor the ability to protect us. We are on our own. It won’t be pleasant.

Fighting Mass Incarceration Under Trump

By James Kilgore for Truthout - Yusef Shakur is a Detroit community organizer who spent several years in Michigan State prisons. "The prison industrial complex has found the right person to feed it," he told Truthout in response to the election results. Trump is of the same "cloth as Reagan, Bush and Nixon," Shakur added. "I expect the worst in terms of patterns of repression." Among those working to end mass incarceration, Shakur's perspectives are not unique. With Attorneys General Eric Holder and Loretta Lynch, the Obama administration often provided wiggle room for reformers to craft and occasionally pass legislation or win changes in policy.

Trump’s Regulations Advisor Will Profit From Weak Regulations

By Steve Horn for Desmog - In a recent “Victory Tour” speech in Des Moines, Iowa, President-elect Donald Trump told the audience that he sought to pick a Cabinet and team of advisors composed of “people that made a fortune” because “now they’re negotiating with you, OK?” Carl Icahn, the 26th richest man on the planet according to Forbes, fits the “made a fortune” bill. Icahn, a business partner of Trump and major donor to his presidential campaign, has been named by the President-elect as his Special Advisor on Regulatory Reform. However, as recently reported by DeSmog, Icahn stands to gain directly from deregulation in the energy and environmental sphere.

Towards Tipping Point: Understanding Trump In Larger Historical Context

By Jeremy Lent for Resilience - Every day, the news seems only to get worse. Trump’s Cabinet appointments are brazenly turning the U.S. into a kleptocracy – a land where those who have gained unprecedented wealth and power by cynically manipulating the rules now get to rewrite the rules for their own exclusive benefit. With all branches of government – executive, Congress, and the Supreme Court – in the hands of a morally bankrupt Republican leadership, the most powerful military and surveillance state in history is becoming a vehicle for corporations to ransack what’s left of the natural world for their short-term gain.

The Next Frontier: Trump And Space Weapons

By Karl Grossman for Counter Punch - It is highly likely that the Trump administration will move to have the U.S. deploy weapons in space. If this happens, it will be profoundly destabilizing, setting off an arms race and, also likely, leading to war in space. For decades there’s been interest by U.S. administrations—the Reagan administration with its “Star Wars” plan a leading example—in placing weapons in space. But that has alternated with some administrations more-or-less opposed, the Obama administration an example. Still, no matter the administration, since work at the United Nations began in 1985 on a treaty seeking, as its title declares...

Canada’s Trudeau Says Trump Very Supportive Of Keystone XL Pipeline

By Nia Williams and Ethan Lou for Reuters - Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Wednesday that U.S. President-elect Donald Trump was "very supportive" of TransCanada Corp's proposed Keystone XL crude oil pipeline in their first conversation after the U.S. election. "He actually brought up Keystone XL and indicated that he was very supportive of it," Trudeau told an event in Calgary, Canada's oil capital. "I’m confident that the right decisions will be taken." Trudeau, who too supports Keystone XL, said also he saw "extraordinary opportunities" for his country if the United States under Trump steps back from tackling climate change...

Trump’s Navarro Nomination May Raise Risk Of Sino-US Conflict

By Staff of Global Times - US President-elect Donald Trump appointed China hawk Peter Navarro as head of the new National Trade Council Wednesday. Navarro's public image is largely shaped by his three books about China: The Coming China Wars, Death by China, and Crouching Tiger: What China's Militarism Means for the World. An article in The New Yorker once said Navarro's views on trade and China were so radical that it's impossible to "find another economist who fully agrees with them." Trump's Navarro pick is regarded as a signal that he will take more aggressive actions to promote his American interests first agenda.

Donald Trump Calls For Expansion Of U.S. Nuclear Arsenal

By Stephen Dinan for The Washington Times - President-elect Donald Trump called for the U.S. to expand its nuclear capabilities, in a surprising Twitter post Thursday that raised questions about what he intends to do. “The United States must greatly strengthen and expand its nuclear capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes,” he said. It was not clear what prompted the message, though the statement came soon after Russian President Vladimir Putin said his own nuclear forces needed to be strengthened. It’s not clear exactly what capabilities either man had in mind.

Bad News For America’s Workers

By Joseph E. Stiglitz for Project Syndicate - NEW YORK – As US President-elect Donald Trump fills his cabinet, what have we learned about the likely direction and impact of his administration’s economic policy? To be sure, enormous uncertainties remain. As in many other areas, Trump’s promises and statements on economic policy have been inconsistent. While he routinely accuses others of lying, many of his economic assertions and promises – indeed, his entire view of governance – seem worthy of Nazi Germany’s “big lie” propagandists. Trump will take charge of an economy on a strongly upward trend, with third-quarter GDP growing at an impressive annual rate of 3.2% and unemployment at 4.6% in November.

Who Will Stand Up To Trump? We Will!

By Keith McHenry. We the people will stand up to Trump. Not Cohen’s list of politicians and leaders who have been benefiting from the corrupt system that put Trump in power. The post-inauguration chaos could well take America and the world into uncharted territory, so creating a strategy on how to transform America into a sustainable, post-capitalist society will take imagination. Beware of groups seeking to hijack the anti-Trump movement for their own benefit. You can become disheartened if you spend energy supporting an organization only to discover that the group, presenting itself as the “vanguard of the revolution” or as a well intentioned (and well financed) reform organization, is more interested in its own well-being, in “organization building,” than in transforming society. A lot of these groups will try to recruit you as the crisis deepens, but you don’t need them. There are things we ourselves can do to prepare, to fight back.

2,300 Leading Scientists Send Trump A Clear Warning: We’re Watching You

By Chris D’Angelo for The Huffington Post - More than 2,300 scientists, including 22 Nobel Prize recipients, have a warning for Donald Trump: Respect science or prepare for a fight. In an open letter Wednesday to the president-elect and Congress, scientists representing all 50 states called on the incoming administration to sufficiently fund scientific research as well as “support and rely on science as a key input for crafting public policy.” Anything short of that, they stressed, is a direct threat to the health and safety of Americans and people around the world.
