“Storm The Heavens”: Notes From The Weather Underground On Resistance

By Dahr Jamail for Truthout - Those of us living within the borders of the United States currently find ourselves living inside the churning engine of a hyper-militarized corporate-fascist farce of a democracy that is spiraling into darkness. The blades of this death-machine are grinding what is left of our precious planet into dust. Now, think back nearly five decades ago to the late 1960s. The Vietnam War was escalating dramatically and imperialism was lurching forward rapidly enough to cause ongoing demonstrations and political activism to spread like wildfire across the seething country. Some were fueled by a hunger for justice great enough they engaged in armed struggle against the US government. It was they who comprised The Weather Underground Organization (WUO), a faction of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) that took up arms in solidarity with the Black Panthers and other militant groups with the aim to "Bring the War Home." Going underground to escape the relentless pursuit of the FBI and other law enforcement, the group managed to carry out several high-profile bombings...

International Day Of Solidarity With People Of Odessa

By Odessa Solidarity Campaign for Popular Resistance - In response to the increasing political repression in the city of Odessa, Ukraine, by that country’s federal government, the U.S.-based Odessa Solidarity Campaign has called for an International Day of Solidarity with the People of Odessa, to take place on April 10, the 73rd anniversary of the liberation of Odessa from fascist occupation. The day will include activities in 19 cities in 12 countries. In Washington, D.C., members of the Odessa Solidarity Campaign will visit the Ukrainian Embassy to the United States to deliver a letter calling on Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko to release all political prisoners and end the current repression in Odessa against relatives of the at least 46 martyrs who were murdered at the House of Trade Unions fire on May 2, 2014.

Antifascists Crash Pro-Trump Rally At Washington Monument

By John Zangas For DC Media Group - A pro-Trump rally at the Washington Monument drawing nearly 400 supporters was trolled and heckled by anti-fascist counter-protesters on March 4. Even though as many as 25 U.S. Park Police officers kept opposing sides apart, there were still several skirmishes at the rally, during a march and at the White House. There were no arrests or injuries reported, though one woman was pushed to the pavement. The DC Trump rally and march were part of a nationwide call to drum up support for the administration which has come under increasing fire over allegations its campaign staff contacted Russian government officials before the election.

Anti-Fascist Activists Take On Trump And Far Right: ‘Resistance Is Our Only Shot’

By Julia Carrie Wong and Sam Levin for The Guardian - More than 1,000 people were shouting “Shut it down” outside the University of California, Berkeley venue where Milo Yiannopoulos planned to speak on Wednesday when a group of black-clad, masked protesters carryings flags and shields arrived to put those words into action. The band of about 150 anti-fascist activists – or antifas – quickly and efficiently stormed the multilayered police barricades that kept the crowd away from the entrances of the Martin Luther King Jr student union. Sequined pink flags were revealed to be mounted on fireworks, which were launched at the building. Others smashed windows with the now vanquished police barricades.

Trump And Everyday Anti-Fascism Beyond Punching Nazis

By Mark Bray for ROAR Magazine - If we want to promote everyday anti-fascism, we must first be clear on what everyday fascism can look like (admittedly it can take many forms), and who the everyday fascists are. Although the alt-right makes a lot of noise, those who self-identify with that rather new label are few. Yet as Trump rose to power, their ideas filtered through the campaign to ignite reactionary passion among many white Americans who felt alienated about the loss of their “place in the sun.” A country that they imagined would remain white, Christian, patriarchal and heteronormative with an eternal manufacturing economy is rapidly disappearing.

Revolt Is The Only Barrier To A Fascist America

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - The ruling elites, terrified by the mobilization of the left in the 1960s, or by what [political scientist] Samuel P. Huntington called America’s “excess of democracy,” built counter-institutions to delegitimize and marginalize critics of corporate capitalism and imperialism. They bought the allegiances of the two main political parties. They imposed … obedience to the neoliberal ideology within academia and the press. This campaign, laid out by Lewis Powell in his 1971 memorandum titled “Attack on American Free Enterprise System,” was the blueprint for the creeping corporate coup d’état that 45 years later is complete.

Fellow Worker And GDC Member Shot At Anti-Fascist Protest In Seattle

By Staff of Twin Cities GDC - On the evening of Friday, January 20th, a comrade of ours was shot in the stomach in the most public place on the University of Washington’s campus in Seattle – a place called “Red Square” for the color of its bricks rather than its politics. This Fellow Worker (what members of the IWW call ourselves) and Defender (for GDC members) is a longtime anti-fascist and dedicated activist, a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the General Defense Committee of the IWW. He’s currently in critical condition at Harborview Hospital in Seattle. They have a Level One Trauma center, so it’s likely he is receiving the best quality care available, for which we are deeply grateful.

Police, Protestors Clash Outside Press Club Building In DC

By Nikita Vladimirov for The Hill - Washington's Metropolitan Police Department clashed with anti-Donald Trump protestors Thursday night outside of the National Press Club building. A reporter for NBC4 said protesters also set off smoke devices, contributing to the atmosphere of chaos ahead of Friday's ceremonies. Police spokesman Hugh Carew said he could not confirm whether officers had used tear gas. A Hill reporter on the scene said people were dancing with music blaring amid the large police presence. The group was projecting images onto buildings, yelling "f--- Trump" and taking photos with a large inflatable elephant with "racist" written on it. At one point, protesters set a small fire, according to social media reports. Police have reportedly made several arrests.

Trump’s Neo-Fascism Built On Neo-Fascism Of Obama And Democrats

By Ajamu Baraka for Black Agenda Report - Late on the evening of December 23, when the attention of the public was fixed on the consumerist excesses of the holiday season, President Obama signed into law the Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Like the other NDAAs that President Obama signed into law during his administration, this one further strengthened the repressive capacities of the state. Buried deep in the provisions of the NDAA was language from a bill introduced by Sen. Rob Portman ostensibly to protect the public from the effects of “foreign propaganda.” As previously reported by Black Agenda Report, the bill, originally introduced last March...

Right-Wing Watchlist Registering Professors Accused Of ‘Anti-American Values’

By Zach Cartwright for US Uncut - Late senator Joseph McCarthy would be proud about a new list being circulated identifying professors espousing ‘anti-American’ values. The website ProfessorWatchlist.org seeks to “expose and document college professors who discriminate against conservative students, promote anti-American values, and advance leftist propaganda in the classroom.”

White Supremacists In Suits And Ties In Washington

By Lacy McCauley. Washington, DC - Nazi salutes. White people demanding a white “homeland.” A speaker talking about how women like to be assaulted. Glowing remarks about Adolf Hitler. Reporters getting booed for asking tough questions. This was the scene inside a conference held at a downtown Washington DC government building this past weekend and at a local restaurant. White supremacists drank champagne this weekend in our nation’s capital to celebrate Trump’s presidential victory. The mostly-male group, part of the “Alt Right” movement, wore suits, ties, and dubious smiles. I wondered if any of them also had white robes at home. I was outside the building with a crowd of about 500 protesters. Our chants included, “Racists eating creme brûlée? You’re still the KKK,” and, “Fascists, we will shut you down.”

Anti-Fascists Storm National Policy Institute Dinner

By John Zangas for DC Media Group - Washington, DC — Activists from Smash Racism DC, an anti-fascist group, confronted about 60 members of the National Policy Institute (NPI), a white nationalist think-tank, at a local restaurant where they were holding a dinner meeting Friday night. They barged into the dining area of Maggiano’s of Little Italy, chasing the self-proclaimed white “identifiers” upstairs. As meeting participants bolted upstairs, protesters chanted, “No Nazis, no KKK, no fascist USA!”

It’s Worse Than You Think

By Chris Hedges for Truthdig. Our capitalist democracy ceased to function more than two decades ago. We underwent a corporate coup carried out by the Democratic and Republican parties. There are no institutions left that can authentically be called democratic. Trump and Hillary Clinton in a functioning democracy would have never been presidential nominees. The long and ruthless corporate assault on the working class, the legal system, electoral politics, the mass media, social services, the ecosystem, education and civil liberties in the name of neoliberalism has disemboweled the country. It has left the nation a decayed wreck. We celebrate ignorance. We have replaced political discourse, news, culture and intellectual inquiry with celebrity worship and spectacle.

Donald Trump: The Dress Rehearsal For Fascism

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - Americans are not offered major-party candidates who have opposing political ideologies or ideas. We are presented only with manufactured political personalities. We vote for the candidate who makes us “feel” good about him or her. Campaigns are entertainment and commercial vehicles to raise billions in advertising revenue for corporations. The candidate who can provide the best show gets the most coverage.

The New European Fascists

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - WARSAW, Poland—Jaroslaw Kurski and Piotr Stasinski embody the hope that once was Poland. They struggled against the Communist regime for years in the underground press and as Solidarity members. They built Gazeta Wyborcza, now one of the most influential newspapers in the country, after the 1989 fall of communism. They helped usher in a period of democracy and open debate, one that included cultural space for historians such as Jan Gross, a Polish-born American who courageously confronted the taboo topic of Polish complicity in the Nazi extermination of nearly all of Poland’s 3 million Jews.
