New Economy Week — October 12-18, 2013

It’s becoming clearer every day that something is wrong in America. We see symptoms of a deeper problem through our own experiences with growing inequality, chronic unemployment, financial instability, undemocratic consolidations of power, environmental crisis, and the declining well being of communities, families, and individuals. Many of us have come to the realization that our economy is out of control; undermining many of those things we hold most dear. For some this leads to despair or resignation, for others it inspires activism, and for increasingly more Americans it leads to a desire and a commitment to innovate and build something that works better for the people, planet, and places we love. New Economy Week is a celebration of this innovative spirit, an opportunity to shine a light on the thousands upon thousands of things that everyday people are doing right now to build a new kind of economy.

October 12: Worldwide March Against Monsanto

This time, as is the case with all sequels, things are expected to be bigger, better, and stronger. Forty-seven states will be represented, along with hundreds of cities and 52 countries spread out across six continents. (Guess which one will not be represented. Get your act together, Antarctica!) In fact, the global nature of this protest is really the eye-opener here. So often, we only worry about how U.S.-run businesses affect U.S.-residing citizens. But a corporation the size of Monsanto has some pretty gigantic effects overseas: In India, more than 250,000 farmers have committed suicide after Monsanto's Bt cotton seeds did not perform as promised. Farmers, left in desperate poverty, are opting to free their families of debt by drinking Monsanto pesticide, thereby ending their lives. Many farmers in other countries are also stripped of their livelihood as a result of false promises, seed patenting and meticulous legal action on the part of Monsanto and other big-ag interests. In many parts of Africa, farmers and their communities are left to choose between starving or eating GMOs.

Monsanto’s Winning The World Food Prize??

In an obscene development, a Monsanto executive is winning this year’s “Nobel Prize of agriculture” -- the prestigious World Food Prize -- for creating GMOs.Receiving it legitimizes the sort of rampant genetic modification Monsanto pioneered, and helps validate a ruthless business model that impoverishes farmers and monopolizes our food. If that wasn't baffling enough, the founder of Syngenta, the same biotech giant joining Bayer in suing Europe to keep selling bee-killing pesticides, will also win the prize -- and with it, a share of the $250,000 prize money. We cannot allow this prize to legitimize frankenfoods and bee killers. The ceremony is in less than two weeks, so we need to act now. Tell the World Food Prize Foundation not to reward Monsanto and bee-killer Syngenta’s outrageous practices.

Life Or Death In The Open Seas

The accompanying IPSO press release states: “Latest Review of Science Reveals Ocean in Critical State from Cumulative Impacts.” Ninety percent (90%) of all life on the planet is in the ocean, a body of water so vast that scientists are only beginning to grasp the full extent of anthropogenic-caused degradation as a result of burning fossil fuels, and in that regard, the recently released IPSO report clearly signals a bold-lettered S-O-S to the world to slow down, and halt, CO2 emissions or risk ocean extinction. The impending extinction problem is not only a result, primarily, of coal-burning electric utilities saturating the atmosphere with CO2. As well, over-fishing is a very, very serious problem. As for one recent example, the Baiji White Dolphin became a victim in the 21st century. Baijis are freshwater dolphin known to be extremely intelligent and native to the Yangtze River but over-fishing killed them all. They are now extinct.

GMO Farmers Losing Their Land; Swimming In Debt

If GMOs really produced a higher yield and feed more hungry people, then why are GMO corn farmers losing land and pushing through debt? If you’ve wanted to look at GMOs purely from the financial bottom line, then this news should make you think twice about Biotech’s promises of better farming and better business. GMO corn farmers are suffering primarily due to Bt-corn. Bt stands for Bacillus thuringiensis; it is the donor organism for genetically modified plants that are supposedly resistant to Round Up Ready chemicals, used profusely by Monsanto. There have been invasions of Bt-corn into organic crops, but this isn’t the issue in a purely financial assessment of GMOs. GMO-free advocate, Farmer-Scientist Partnership for Development has just released a book which explains the adverse effects of GMO-corn on farmers and shows ‘evidence of failure’ of what was supposed to have given farmers increased yields and better income. They are calling GMO a ‘vicious cycle of poverty’. Farmers all over the world are finding themselves with poor harvests and lack-luster incomes.

Commonomics: How to Build Local Economies Strong Enough for Everyone

Welcome to “Commonomics,” a new collaboration between YES! Magazine andGRITtv. Starting this month, we’ll be traveling the country asking the question: what makes for a strong local economy? It's not a question that produces easy answers. Commonomics will focus on the gatherers, those who are working to foster economic growth from within. We’ll be asking what’s working, what isn’t, and by what standard are our local economies to be judged?

Vertical Farming The Future Of Urban Food?

Sky Green in Singapore may be the largest vertical farming project in the world In Singapore, the challenge of feeding a growing population is pushing the concept of urban farming to new heights. A super-efficient vertical farming system is producing greens for 5 million residents. It is efficient, costs less than running a traditional farm, has lower transit costs and the energy used is the equivalent of a light bulb. It brings fresh vegetables to nearby markets. The project has been a success and is quadrupling in size.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Finding Empathy, Passion And Resistance

There is an identifying term that covers the millions of resistance actions that have been taking place throughout our history. It is called the compassionate rebel revolution. A compassionate rebel persona lives in everyone. It combines our ability to care about an issue with our capacity to act against the status quo for the change we believe in. It enables ordinary people to find creative, non-violent solutions to the problems that concern them, and, in the process to contribute towards making the world around them a better place to live for future generations. It projects them into everyday heroes whose acts of caring and courage continue to transform our politics, our culture and our way of life.

Defeating Dirty Energy: 5 Inspiring Examples of David Beating Goliath

Okay, so we’re all depressed. The planet is going to hell in a bucket, Congress is a train wreck, the fossil fuel lobby is stomping us into the ground, the Keystone XL pipeline means game over for climate change. Right? No, wrong. And here’s why. I’ve never been a Pollyanna, but all over the world I see remarkable things happening. In one multi-billion dollar mega-project after another, David is standing up to Goliath—and winning. These projects run the whole gamut of dirty and destructive development, from coal and oil to open-pit mines and giant dams. In many cases, they involve stories I’ve reported on in the past few years forOnEarth. . . So what about the Goliaths? How have they reacted to this chain of events, all of them unfolding in just a matter of months?

Hungary Destroys Genetically Modified Corn Crops

Hungary has destroyed almost 1,000 acres of corn found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds, which are illegal in the country, International Business Times reports. The corn was plowed under so that pollen would not contaminate other crops. The action came in response to a new regulation introduced in March that stipulates that seeds are supposed to be checked for GMO before they can be sold to farmers. But some of the GMO seeds, manufactured by U.S. seed giants Monsanto and Pioneer, made it onto the market anyway. The Hungarian government said it will continue to test seeds despite the fact that seed sellers are obliged to make sure their products are GMO-free. Last week the Hungarian unit of Monsanto, the largest producer of GMO seeds, appealed to the Budapest Municipal Court to suspend the resolution by the Hungarian Agriculture Office to destroy the corn, but they were turned down, according to the Budapest Times.

First Nations Reclaim Stewardship of Native Lands

The lands of the Signigtog Mi'kmaq have never been ceded or sold; for centuries, the British Crown claimed to be holding the lands in trust for them. However, the Original people of the territory, together with their hereditary and elected leaders, believe that their lands and waters are being badly mismanaged by Canada, the province and corporations to the point of ruin. Now facing complete destruction, they feel that the lands are no longer capable of providing enough to support the populations of the region. Because of these threats to their survival and way of life, the Mi'kmaq people of Signigtog are resuming stewardship of their lands and waters to correct the problems and are planning measures to restore them back to good health. Last July, the Signigtog District Grand Council notified the province of New Brunswick that they had served shale gas developer Southwestern Energy (SWN) with an eviction notice.

Exclusive: Flush The TPP Conversation With President Obama

President Barack Obama gave an exclusive interview to FlushTheTPP.org to discuss the massive trade deal, the Trans-Pacific Partnership. The agreement, which has been negotiated for 3 and 1/2 years in secret by President Obama except for 600 corporate advisers who have put in the aggreement language that ensures the transnational corporations have more power than government's and that their profits come before the necessities of the people and the protection of the planet. In an unique approach President Obama has classified the text of the TPP. This have never been done with a trade agreement before the TPP. The TPP is the largest agreement since the WTO and will affect every aspect of your life including food, water, wages, Internet access, banking regulation and environmental laws among other areas. In fact laws like "Buy American" will be a violation because they are a trade barrier, as are laws that favor buying local or buying sustainable products.

Ending Hunger: Sustainable Development Goals After 2015

United Nations - Reducing the proportion of undernourished people by half until 2015 was one of the Millennium Development Goals that the international community set in 2000. It will not be reached: At least 870 million people worldwide – and one child in five – still go hungry; this in a world where we already produce enough food today to feed nine billion people in 2050. Further progress towards reaching this goal can be made in the remaining months, but we must ask ourselves what comes afterwards. The debate on the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to be reached by 2030, has already begun. On Wednesday, Sep. 25, heads of states and governments will meet in New York. Defeating hunger remains a priority. This is not simply a matter of providing everyone with enough food; crucial for the future of all human beings is how this should happen.

Support The Campaign To Label GMO Foods NOW

If you want to see GMO's labels, respond to this message from Washington State where they are in a tough battle with Monsanto and other big ag companies: It’s about to get uglier. We are just over 24 hours from the final month of this campaign and the attacks we’ve been facing these last two weeks are the tip of the iceberg. We need you, Friend, to help us fight the lies. Click here to donate $5.22 into our Rapid TV Response Fund. Monsanto and their chemical company cronies are going to throw everything they’ve got at us, but we have something their corporate cash can’t buy...all of you. Midnight tomorrow is the deadline for us to raise $40,000. If we hit our goal we’ll be in a strong position to withstand the onslaught we’re facing.

The People Triumph Over Biotech: Monsanto Protection Act Defeated In The Senate

"Finally, it seems like we have the attention of some of the members of Congress. As the result of an enormous outcry, the Senate voted down the rider that was recently approved by the House of Representatives. The rider would have continued Big Biotech’s immunity against prosecution resulting from their toxic farming practices and questionable crops. As of September 30th, the so-called Monsanto Protection Act will be dead. This is a major victory for anti-GMO activists as it is the first time that Congress has decided in favor of the constituents as opposed to companies like Monsanto, Sygenta, Bayer, and Dow."
