Eyewitness To America Betraying Mandela’s South Africa, II

At the dawn of the Nelson Mandela administration, I had the extraordinary privilege to sit at the table with the new African National Congress leadership as the Environmental Protection Agency /White House liaison to the Mandela government. My job was to work with the new ANC leadership to design and provide US technical environmental expertise to assist the majority population's recovery from the environmental and public health disaster the apartheid system imposed on it. This process took place through the flagship foreign policy vehicle, the US-South African BiNational Commission commonly called the Gore-Mbeki Commission or the BNC. All bilateral foreign policy activities between the US and South Africa took place through this Commission.

International Migrants Day: 7 Facts And Statistics About Migrants

International Migrants Day 2013 is a day to recognize and celebrate the millions of people around the world who have left their homeland in search of a better future or a new opportunity. First proclaimed by the United Nations in 2000, December 18th invites countries to celebrate International Migrants Day "through the dissemination of information ...and through the sharing of experiences and the design of actions to ensure their protection." In this spirit, based on the latest Pew Research study, Latin Times has compiled 7 Facts And Statistics About Migrants In 2013.

Syrian Refugees In Lebanon Face Bitter Winter

Shivering in the snow, Syrian Aisha Mohammad looked at the last-minute charity that saved her children from freezing during the smack of a particularly tough Lebanese winter: a wood-burning stove complete with twigs and garbage to ignite in hopes of warming her drafty tent in an icy eastern plain. Still, her seven children quake from the cold in their donated, bright plastic rain boots, even as they build snowmen resembling their own skinny selves. Since fleeing Syrian government shelling in the northeast province of Raqqa nine months ago, their playground has been here, among the rows of crowded tents they call home.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Time To Fight For Our Human Rights

This week marked the 65th anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. What would it be like if people in the United States knew they had these rights and demanded to have them realized? We believe it would be a very different world – one that is more humane on every front. Instead, this week an annual report of Credit Suisse ranked the US as the most unequal of all advanced countries. Harriet Tubman once said, “I freed a thousand slaves; I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” Similarly, we have human rights and our rights are being violated every day, yet many are not aware of this.

Solitary Confinement: Too Controversial For Costco

Imagine a room so small that you can stretch your arms out and touch the gray concrete walls. The only objects in the room are a bunk and a toilet, perhaps a few books and a photograph or two. The room’s narrow window admits only a sliver of natural light, and the solid steel door contains a slot through which a meal tray can pass. You may catch a glimpse of a hand, or hear a voice shouting from nearby. Otherwise you have no contact with another human being. Imagine spending a month in this room, 23 hours a day, with one hour to exercise alone in a small pen. Now imagine the month stretching to a year–or ten, or twenty.

2 Million Voices Remember 2 Million Victims Of Afghan War

On the 16th of November, 2013, eight-year-old Hashim s/o Abdul Hamid and nine-year-old Zukoom s/o Abdul Majid were on the streets of Kabul polishing boots when a suicide bombing ( in opposition to the U.S./Afghanistan Bilateral Security Agreement ) killed them. Johnny Barber, a peace activist from New York, and Ronya, an independent, freelance journalist from Germany, accompanied the Afghan Peace Volunteers ( APVs ) to Hashim’s and Zukoom’s funeral in an Internally Displaced Persons ( IDP ) camp two days later. We had a conversation with Hashim and Zukoom’s classmates, Kahar and Naseem, which you can view at “At least 13 Afghan civilians killed, including Hashim & Zukoom”

VIDEO: Protesters Demand Peoples Budget: “We Are Hungry”

Only hours before Paul Ryan and Patty Murray announced that they reached a two year budget agreement (The BiPartisan Budget Act of 2013), representatives from a broad coalition demanding a budget that would cut military expenditures in order to increase funding for a wide range of domestic programs called on Congressional leaders to craft a budget for people, peace and the planet. Now, because this broad coalition included over a hundred peace, anti-hunger, anti-poverty, environmental and community groups it is almost universally ignored within the walls of Congress. That is one reason why part of that call came in the form of an unscheduled visit to the office of Paul Ryan and Patty Murray.

A Human Right to Resist

Civil resistance – popular nonviolent struggle waged by ordinary people against dictatorship, foreign intervention, colonial occupation, corruption, or injustice with the use of diverse methods of nonviolent action - is by no means a new phenomenon. It has been practiced in a strategic manner for at least two centuries, going back as far as the American colonists’ mass boycotts and refusal to comply with the orders of the British crown that won them de-facto independence even before the American Revolution began.[1] As the forthcoming book Why Civil Resistance Works, by Erica Chenoweth and Maria Stephan shows, both the frequency of instances in which civil resistance is waged and the knowledge of how it is effective are now accelerating. Consequently, civil resistance has a chance to overtake violent resistance as the global default method for grievance and rights-based struggles in the twenty-first century.

Stop Blank Check To Israel, Stop Funding Human Rights Violations

December 10th is Human Rights Day. This day is an opportunity for all of us to reflect on the importance of human rights in our increasingly interconnected world. Human Rights are basic freedoms to which all humans are entitled: the right to life, the freedom of thought and expression, and equality before the law. But are these rights applied equally, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and other differences? Last month I traveled on a two-week delegation to Palestine and Israel organized by Interfaith Peace-Builders. During my trip, I spoke with many individuals, both Israeli and Palestinian, and heard their personal stories. With every experience, my eyes were opened to the harsh reality of life in this region.

Escape From LA Sweatshop: How Modern-Day Slaves Become Lobbyists

I thought slavery was only in the books,” she says. “I was surprised to find myself living in it.” According to the International Labor Organization, nearly 21 million people are victims of forced labor—often called modern-day slavery—across the world. Many of them are exploited in agriculture, construction, domestic servitude, and manufacturing. An estimated 15,000-17,500 people are trafficked into the United States alone every year. Molina’s experience is typical. What’s remarkable is what she did with it. Just 40 days into her internment, Molina broke free. She got permission to go to church alone and figured out how to contact a concerned fellow worker who had noticed Molina’s abuse in the shop. With her help Molina connected with the nonprofit Coalition to Abolish Slavery and Trafficking (CAST).

Bring Lynne Stewart Home For The Holidays

“I need to ask once again for your assistance in forcing the Bureau of Prisons to grant my Compassionate Release. They have been stonewalling since August and my life expectancy, as per my cancer doctor, is down to 12 months. They know that I am fully qualified and that over 40,000 people have signed on to force them to do the right thing, which is to let me go home to my family and to receive advanced care in New York City. “Yet they refuse to act. While this is entirely within the range of their politics and their cruelty to hold political prisoners until we have days to live before releasing us – witness Herman Wallace of Angola and Marilyn Buck – we are fighting not to permit this and call for a BIG push.”

Israeli Cabinet Likely To Scrap Illegal Prawer Plan

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government is likely to drop the current version of its controversial plan to relocate thousands of Negev Bedouin into already recognized villages, after it emerged that community leaders did not consent to the proposal despite claims to the contrary. Coalition chairman MK Yariv Levin believes that the current form of the Prawer plan for regulating Bedouin settlement in the Negev will be shelved. Due to the revelation that former MK Benny Begin, who drew up the plan, did not approach the Bedouin themselves with the plan and did not receive their approval, there is no longer a coalition majority supporting the plan, Levin said.

Emergency Demo At Algerian Embassy To Protect Djamel Ameziane

Join us between 2-3 P.M. on Tuesday, December 10, in front of the Algerian embassy in Washington, DC. We're demonstrating because the Center for Constitutional Rights' client Djamel Ameziane has been sent from Guantánamo to Algeria against his will and in violation of international law. Djamel is now being held in secret detention and is at risk. He is an innocent man who has suffered detention at Guantánamo for nearly twelve years, despite having been cleared by both President Bush and President Obama. Join us to call on the Algerian government to release Djamel Ameziane immediately, and to respect and protect his human rights.

The People’s Budget Goes To Washington

Join us at the Capitol in DC on Tuesday December 10 - International Human Rights Day. We're calling for major cuts (25 to 50%) in runaway military spending in order to meet dire needs at home - in human services, jobs, and the environment. We will hold a news conference at 10 AM at Congressman John Conyers' office, 2426 Rayburn House Office Building. (Allow a half hour to get through security.) Peace, anti-poverty, environmental, and community activists will speak at the press conference, highlighting critical community needs that should be funded instead of dangerous and wasteful military spending. Please contact Mark Dunlea (dunleamark@aol.com; 518 860-3725) if your organization is interested in speaking. There will also be a group photo op for those who'd like to participate, from 9:20 - 9:30 AM at the Capitol's East Front, House Triangle, near Independence Ave. SE and New Jersey Ave.

Deadly Clashes Between Locals And Biggest Gold Mining Company

While PNG law recognises their customary title, the local owners have been poorly compensated. They have faced violent displacement, their land has been devastated and their rivers poisoned by toxic mine waste. And when they enter the mine site to scavenge for scrap, they are treated like trespassers even though they are on their own land. In a damning 2011 report, Human Rights Watch noted that while the locals remain desperately poor, an estimated US$20 billion worth of gold had been extracted the mine operators between 1990 and 2010. Toronto-based Barrick Gold acquired majority ownership of the mine in 2006 from another Canadian company called Placer Dome. Barrick Gold now has 95% ownership, the rest being held by a local state-owned company.
