Protest Against ICE At Statute Of Liberty On 4th Of July

Two protests at the Statue of Liberty against US immigration policy forced the monument to close for the Fourth of July. The statue is a symbol of the United States welcoming immigrants, as a result, it was an excellent place to highlight the myth of the United States which now persecutes immigrants and restricts immigration. On Independence Day six people were arrested for hanging a large banner on the statue's pedestal that read “Abolish I.C.E.”  They were taken into custody around 2:30 p.m. Associated Press reported on the second-related protest resulting in an additional arrest, writing, a woman protesting U.S. immigration policy climbed the Statue of Liberty's base and forced the monument's evacuation on the Fourth of July hours after several other demonstrators had hung a banner on the statue's pedestal and had been arrested. About 100 feet (30 meters) above ground, the climber engaged in a four-hour standoff with police

Drop The Charges Against Ice Protesters The #SanDiegoClimbers

Over the last few days as we've been mobilizing with our Mijente comrades in San Diego to speak out against the implementation of Operation Streamline and the separation of families/criminalization of migration due to invisible borders.  Our work is not done. Call District Attorney, Summer Stephan, at 619-531-3544 between 10 am and 7 pm CST and demand that she drop the charges against the #SanDiegoClimbers who dropped the Free Our Families Now banner.

Nationwide Protests: Pro-Immigrant Or Anti-Trump?

Over the past weeks, there has been a series of major protests against the mistreatment of immigrants. Hundreds were arrested after blocking DC streets and sitting-in at a Senate office building.  Two weeks ago, there were #FamiliesTogether rallies across the United States that forced Trump to end child separation and return to the Obama-era policy of incarcerating immigrant families. People are taking action for immigrant rights and protesting the separation of children from their families as well as the indefinite detention of immigrant families.

Hundreds Arrested In DC Protesting Immigrant Detention, Child Separation

Protests against the zero-tolerance policy on immigration that has resulted in children being imprisoned without their parents, going to court without an adult and families being detained have resulted in mass protests. We have reported on #OccupyICE protests that occurring across the nation, there were also mass protests in Washington, DC and around the country as part of #WomenDisobey. In Washington, DC women-led protests shut down streets and occupied a Senate office building as Congress prepared to leave the capital for the Fourth of July recess without resolving the immigration injustice that is occurring on a daily basis.

Dozens Of Parents With Their Babies Occupy ICE Field Director Office

On June 21, 2018, dozens of parents and babies took over the offices of Thomas R. Decker, New York field office director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations in protest of the Trump administration’s heartless separation of children from their families. Local children sang together and drew on paper hearts to leave behind in support of the more than 2,000 boys and girls torn from their families as a result of the Trump administration’s horrific “zero tolerance” policy. These parents dismissed President Trump’s executive order as a ploy for whole families to be unjustly and unnecessarily – and potentially indefinitely – detained, noting that thousands of children had still not been reunited with their families, and that just last night dozens of children ripped from their parents’ arms at the border arrived in NYC airports.

Protect Immigrants’ Rights; End The Crises That Drive Migration

The ugliness of US immigration policy is once again evident. There is national outrage that separating children, often infants, from their parents is wrong. There is also national consensus (nine out of ten people in the US) that people brought here by their parents, the Dreamers, should not be forced out of the country as adults. The highly restrictive, dysfunctional immigration system in the United States serves the interests of  big business and US Empire. Investors can cross borders to find workers who will accept slave-labor wages and dangerous environments, but workers cannot cross borders to find better wages and safety.

ICE’s Military-Style Raid Leaves Immigrant Communities Terrorized

The chaos and fear that ensued last week have not abated. Lawyers were finally able to initiate contact with the 56 men in detention, but they have still not been able to contact the women, who are being detained in Michigan. The majority of families have still not been able to speak on the phone or have any contact with their loved ones who are in custody. Deportations could begin as soon as today, though no one knows for sure. This lack of information is only creating more terror in the community. Though large-scale immigration raids have happened before, the size and brutality of this particular raid, along with the use of military tactics, have shocked even the most seasoned immigrants’ rights activists. Regardless of citizenship status, for workers — including teenagers, mothers, fathers, and those with medical issues — to be treated like enemy insurgents is beyond disturbing. It is terrible, barbaric, and inhumane.

Dreamers March, Protest In DC To Save DACA

Washington, DC - A group of Dreamers, recipients of Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status that allow undocumented immigrants who arrived in the US as children to remain, marched 250 miles from New York City to Washington, DC to push members of Congress to restore DACA. They are taking action with allies who joined them in DC this week. Here are a few reports.

Immigrant Youth Walking For DACA Rally At Philadelphia Liberty Bell

On Tuesday, February 20th the 11 undocumented youth and allies who began The Walk to Stay Home, a 15-day walk from New York City to Washington DC, arrived at the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia. The stop signals the halfway point of the 250-mile journey organized by the Seed Project with the support of the #OurDream Campaign; drawing attention to the need for a clean Dream Act that not only grants permanent protection for undocumented youth but does not harm 11 million undocumented people living and working in the United States. “We have people with blisters, cramps, bleeding noses, and injured feet from the intensity of this walk, but that pain only pushes us forward” said Barbara Hernandez, a California DACA recipient from Orange County.

The Fight For Immigrant’s Rights; DACA And Beyond

In 2017, President Trump repealed Obama's executive order for young immigrants, Dreamers, called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allowed them temporary status in the United States. The repeal took effect in September and advocates have been fighting since then to restore DACA and pass the Dream Act, which would create a path to citizenship. We speak with two immigrant's rights advocates, Mani Martinez of Cosecha Movement and Juan Escalante of America's Voice, about the impacts of current immigration policies and what it would take to permanently protect immigrants in the United States.

Day 3 Of Countdown To Launch: Mani Martinez

By Mani Martinez for Popular Resistance. Because I am involved in putting up a great deal of the articles that are on Popular Resistance, my scope of political issues has been incredibly broadened. I think corporate art, culture, and media outlets rely on segregating the information that people receive in their respective corners of the world. That maintains the necessary division amongst the working class, without which the capitalist class can’t rule. Our platform at Popular Resistance, therefore makes a great attempt at promoting working class unity by highlighting the importance of all political struggle against capitalism!

Undocumented Youth & Allies Protest U.S. Capitol For DACA

By Staff for Fight for the Dream. On December 7, 2017 at about 2:00 pm, immigrant youth and allies gathered in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center to demand permanent protection for undocumented youth. Eight DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) recipients and allies were arrested at the demonstration, which saw activists travel from as far as New York and California to call on Congress to pass a Dream Act as part of the omnibus spending bill. Staging their own mock Congressional hearing, protesters shared “testimonies” of why they were there and led a crowd chanting “No Dream, No Deal” and “Undocumented and Unafraid.” The 8 DACA recipients and allies participating in the civil disobedience then began a sit-in and occupied Emancipation Hall for approximately 20 minutes before being arrested and removed from the Capitol.

Macy’s Day Parade Blocked By Undocumented Youth

By Roberto Juarez for Cosecha. “Undocumented youth are refusing to put our destiny in the hands of establishment politicians. We are choosing to fight for the dignity of our entire immigrant community, and that begins with us. We are your classmates, your coworkers, and your neighbors” said Hector-Jario Martinez, one of the Undocumented Youth who was arrested at the Macy’s Day Parade. “We are not just the future of this country, but we are also the present workers that it depends on. We are millions of young undocumented students and workers who are the backbones of our schools, industries, and communities. We are calling on our community members to stand up and fight for our right to work and live in this country. “

Blockade Illustrates Why Chicago Is Not A Sanctuary City

By Organized Communities Against Deportations. Chicago, IL – Three life-size representations of statistics that show how Chicago and Mayor Emanuel have failed to live up to the claim of being a “Sanctuary” city and instead continue to uplift policies that center policing and incarceration, and fail to protect people from deportations. The role of the Chicago Police Department’s Gang database has been brought to the forefront by the case of an immigrant father from Back of the Yards, Wilmer Catalan-Ramirez, who has filed a lawsuit against the City of Chicago for its role in directing immigration enforcement to his door by wrongfully claiming that he is a gang member.

Exposed: Brutal FBI Tactics To Recruit Informants

By Trevor Aaronson for The Intercept. Florida - A bailiff pushed Jabar Ali Refaie’s wheelchair into a federal courtroom in Tampa, Florida, on September 20. Dressed in an orange jumpsuit and looking weak from not having had the drugs he takes to treat his multiple sclerosis, the 37-year-old Refaie was here for a bond hearing after being indicted on felony charges that allege he sold counterfeit BMW logos and diagnostic software on eBay. Refaie’s case seemed by appearances to be about a lot more than selling shady car parts on the internet. That much was obvious from Assistant U.S. Attorney Carlton C. Gammons’s stiff bond requests — $25,000, a GPS monitoring device, the surrender of his passport, and the removal of all firearms from his residence — as well as the six U.S. Homeland Security agents who packed into the courtroom for Refaie’s hearing.
