Jewish Youth Say “Never Again” As They Protest Trump’s Concentration Camps

NEWARK, NEW JERSEY—Planes on their way to the airport fly low over a crowd of young protesters chanting “Racist ICE has got to go!” More than 100 Jewish and immigrant activists have gathered outside the Elizabeth Contract Detention Center in New Jersey, where Immigration and Customs Enforcement holds approximately 300 detainees. Rabbi Salem Pearce leads the protesters in the Mourner’s Kaddish, a Jewish prayer of mourning, for six immigrant children who have died in U.S. government custody. “There are more who are not named,” she says. “There will be more.”

Heyburn 9 Protester Speaks About The Trial, Motives And How To Help

Courtney Kearney is one of the Heyburn 9 arrested July 26, 2018 after halting the functioning of Louisville’s immigration court, located on the 11th floor of the Heyburn building on Broadway. The Heyburn 9 — under the leadership of Black Lives Matter Louisville and Mijente — locked their wrists together with chains and PVC pipe and blocked the elevators with their bodies.  This act of civil disobedience took place after weeks of calls to abolish ICE in response to President Trump’s policies of separating migrant children and infants from their parents at the border.

Call To Action: Close The Concentration Camps Now!

This week we wrote about the need to transform US immigration policy beginning with closing the immigrant detention camps in Stop Immigrant Arrests, Close The Camps, Transform Immigration Policy. We are calling on all people of conscience to shut down the concentration camps on the US-Mexico border through any nonviolent means necessary. From Abolitionism to Standing Rock, Americans have come together time and again to defy horrific injustice. Now, as the government tries to normalize concentration camps, it is time like never before to target those responsible.

Sanctuary Leaders Fight Back Against ICE’s ‘Psychological Violence’ And Steep Fines

Ivan Ramirez, a 13-year-old Guatemalan asylum seeker, says he can’t remember a time in his life when he felt free. Now that the federal government intends to fine his mother more than $300,000, he worries that whatever semblance of safety they have in sanctuary is being threatened. Ivan and his mother Hilda Ramirez came to the United States fleeing familial violence in 2014. Since then, they have been “under attack” by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the elder Ramirez said. They were detained together for almost a year after first arriving in the United States.

What To Do In An Age When Crossing The Border Is A Crime

It wasn't always a crime to cross the border, but now it is not only a crime but we are also housing immigrants in concentration camps under severe conditions and prosecuting those who try to assist them. As awareness of the inhumanity of immigration policy in the United States grows, people are taking action to change it. We speak with immigration attorney Heather Benno about how the laws have changed (hint: it started way before Trump) and practical advice for immigrants and human rights advocates about how to handle ICE raids, plus information about upcoming actions. Being a human and seeking asylum are not crimes.

Stop Immigrant Arrests, Close The Camps, Transform Immigration Policy

Public awareness of the brutal repression against immigrants seeking entry to the United States, the reasons for their migration, and terrorism against immigrants living in the US are reaching levels that make them hard to ignore. The current immigration crisis is self-created and bi-partisan. Although the Trump administration's rhetoric is extreme, it reflects policies that have developed over a long period of time. Under Article 13 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a person has “the right to leave any country, including his or her own, and to return to his or her country at any time.” Until the twentieth century, immigrants were welcomed into the United States. Immigrant and slave labor built many of the institutions and much of the infrastructure in the US.

July 12: A Vigil To End Human Concentration Camps

We are a coalition of people, many of whom are mothers, dedicated to human rights, and the fundamental principle behind democracy that all human beings have a right to life, liberty and dignity. We are partnering with international, national, regional and local communities and organizations who believe that these fundamental rights are not negotiable and are willing to protect them. On Friday July 12th, 2019, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Concentration Camps, will bring thousands of people to locations worldwide as well as to concentration camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by migrants.

Trouble At The Border, American Concentration Camps

Yes, we have a serious problem at the border — indeed, at every border we create and defend with force of arms and bureaucratic indifference. “‘If you want water, just drink from a toilet.’ That’s what border patrol told one thirsty woman we met on today’s #DemsAtTheBorder trip. These are the same CBP personnel who threatened to throw burritos at members of Congress. Changes must be made.” So tweeted U.S. Rep. Judy Chu in the wake of a visit by congressmen and women to Texas border facilities last week, stirring even further incredulity and disgust about the nature of these American concentration camps for immigrants. The problem we have is ourselves.

The Increasing Cruelty Of The US’ Monroe Doctrine

A publishing company in New Brunswick, Canada, has terminated its contract with cartoonist Michael de Adder after a drawing he did of President Donald Trump standing over the bodies of two drowned migrants went viral on social media. The drawing, which was posted on de Adder's Twitter account on June 26, shows Trump standing beside a golf cart, golf club in hand, looking down at the bodies of a father and daughter who drowned in the Rio Grande while trying to cross from Mexico into Texas. Trump asks, "Do you mind if I play through?"

Federal Prosecutors To Retry Humanitarian Who Gave Water To Migrants

Federal prosecutors announced they will retry a border-aid worker accused of smuggling migrants three weeks after jurors couldn’t agree whether Scott Warren committed any crimes.  The jurors deadlocked 8-4 on three felony charges, including one charge of conspiring to smuggle two Central American men and two charges for harboring them.  In a Tuesday morning court hearing, prosecutors announced they would retry him on the two counts of harboring, but will dismiss the charge of conspiracy to smuggle. Warren's retrial date is set for Nov. 12.

Trump’s Immigration Police State Persistently Violates The Law

The US government’s treatment of immigrant children not only shocks the conscience, it is also in chronic, blatant violation of US law. The US government’s deliberate, unlawful cruelty to its child hostages was vividly illustrated by government attorney Sarah Fabian, a self-described mother, as she tried to explain to the disbelieving three judges of the US Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals how the US government could say it held children in “safe and sanitary” conditions as required by law. Fabian’s stunning performance went viral, showing her defending conditions in which the government deprives its child-prisoners of soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, or beds. A federal district court had already ruled that these conditions were not “safe and sanitary.”

More Than 200 Civil Rights Groups Ask Congress To Decriminalize Border Crossings

Immigrant rights defenders signed on to a letter to Congressional leaders demanding the end of Clinton-era enforcement rules that criminalize crossing the border. The letter published below demands the reversal of immigration enforcement measures signed into law by Bill Clinton back in 1996, which critics view as the beginning of a major buildup of the detention and deportation systems. The 240 groups also called for an end to immigrant detention without bail, halting automatic deportations of people based on criminal convictions, and disentangling immigration enforcement from local policing.   The law making illegal entry a misdemeanor and subsequent violations a felony is nearly 100 years old. It  was authored by a segregationist Democratic Senator, Coleman Blease of South Carolina in 1929.

Interfaith Leaders Block Access To ICE Office

A group of 31 ministers, rabbis, and religious leaders blocked the garage doors of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) building in Milwaukee on June 24, to resist the latest threats by President Trump to hold immigration raids that targeted refugee families. The Administration’s continued policies of separating families at the border and imprisoning people seeking asylum has been routinely condemned as brutal, subjecting vulnerable children to inhumane conditions. At the Milwaukee protest, more than one thousand people rallied in the streets surrounding the ICE building, at times blocking traffic. Hundreds of delegates from the United Church of Christ (UCC) from all over the country, who were visiting Milwaukee for their General Synod, marched from the Wisconsin Center to the ICE building.

Nationwide ‘Close The Camps’ Demonstrations Announced To Protest Horrific Conditions At Trump Detention Centers

As appalling details of the conditions at immigrant detention centers in the U.S. continue to pour in—with one doctor recently comparing them to "torture facilities"—a coalition of rights groups on Friday announced nationwide "Close the Camps" demonstrations for next week to protest the Trump administration's treatment of migrant children. "We've seen the images and heard the stories coming out of child detention centers," said MoveOn.org, one of the groups helping to organize the events, which are set to take place Tuesday, July 2.

Wayfair’s Walkout Against Concentration Camps

Hundreds of Wayfair workers in Boston walked out on Wednesday to protest their company’s complicity in Trump's migrant detention camps on the border. We spoke with walkout leader Maddie Howard about the workers’ decision to take action on the job against the camps. Hundreds of workers at the online retailer Wayfair walked out of their jobs yesterday to protest their company’s decision to sell beds to migrant detention camps on the US-Mexico border. Their action received support from Reps. Rashida Tlaib and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — AOC tweeted: “[t]his is what solidarity looks like — a reminder that everyday people have real power, as long as we’re brave enough to use it.”
