Inauguration Protests Commence In Nation’s Capital And Beyond

By Deirdre Fulton for Common Dreams. With less than a week until President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration, the resistance has officially begun. People around the country rallied on Saturday to tell the nation: Even in the face of the threats posed by the incoming Trump administration, immigrants and their families are here to stay. "The Trump team has already announced that some of their first acts of brutality will be to lash out against immigrants and Muslims," organizers wrote in a call to action. "Their aim is to deport millions of immigrants, rip millions of families apart, and drive tens of millions of immigrants, refugees, and their families and friends into silence out of fear." "We are committed to standing up for an America which values all people," they continued. "Just one week before Donald Trump’s inauguration we will stand up to say yes to community, love for one another, shared strength, and human dignity. It is time for us to link arms and stand as a line of defense against Donald Trump's promised reign of terror."

For US Inauguration, Writers Plan Resistance Events Worldwide

By John K. Wilson for Truthout - The events will feature a wide array of writers ranging from Syrian exile (and Chicago cab driver) Osama Alomar to former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky. On the steps of the New York Public Library at 2 pm, PEN America is hosting the biggest of the Writers Resist events, featuring Pinsky, Belieu and a wide range of writers united "to defend free expression, reject hatred, and uphold truth in the face of lies and misinformation." More than 60 writers are scheduled to speak, including Rita Dove, Andrew Solomon, Masha Gessen, Laurie Anderson, Rosanne Cash, Jeff Eugenides, Amy Goodman, Jacqueline Woodson, Monica Youn, A.M. Homes, Moustafa Bayoumi, Alexander Chee, Art Spiegelman and Michael Cunningham.

Two Presidents Who Ignited Most Inauguration Protests

By Jack Smith IV for Policy Mic. Donald Trump promised a peaceful transition. On Inauguration Day, some protestors have a mind to disturb that peace. Tens of thousands of people are pledging to show up to protest on Jan. 20, either with anti-war groups and grassroots organizations, or just on their own as rogue agitators. Over a dozen groups have requested permits, and local organizers are coordinating communal sleeping spaces in churches to accommodate hecklers and dissidents from across the country. This doesn't happen every four years. In fact, Donald Trump will begin his presidential legacy by joining a pair of presidents mired by controversy and scorned by history. "There've really only been two presidents who stand out from all of the others in terms of the vastness of the protests against them, either against them personally or against the wars that were taking place during their administrations,"

Become #Ungovernable

By Ungovernable. We pledge to create a resistance movement that makes Trump unable to govern our oppression; unable to deceive the people, to make the people accept his reign of hatred. We refuse to give hatred a chance to govern, a chance to roll back civil and human rights, a chance to deport millions of people, a chance to create camps and registries for Muslims, a chance to expand the prison industrial complex, a chance to expand its drone wars, or a chance to turn back the gains won by our struggles. We pledge resistance to this renewed attack on our communities. As we resist, we will create new governing institutions, new economic relationships, and new ways of being human. What we will not do is sanction and/or normalize “overt” white supremacy. Let’s start now. Let’s make the so-called inauguration day a day to resist a day to be ungovernable and plan for a new future and new way.

J20 Counter-Inauguration Protests

By Infoshop News. Tens of thousands of people will be traveling to Washington, DC on January 20, 2017 (J20) and January 21, to protest the inauguration of Minority President Donald Trump. Many other cities will see similar protests and actions. Infoshop News will be providing information about all of the scheduled protests iand we will be posting news about the protests as they happen in D.C, and around the country. Scheuled protests include a general disruption of the inauguration (J20), a Women's March on Washington, and many others. Many Americans dislike and oppose Donald Trump as a despicable human being. Many are worried that his policies will greatly benefit the rich, further worsening the gap between the 1% and the rest of us.

#KeepitOn: Mobile Carriers Boost Internet For U.S. Inauguration Events

By Deji Olukotun and Peter Micek for Access Now - The largest mobile carriers in the U.S. have responded to a joint letter from Access Now and WITNESS asking them to provide adequate internet connectivity during the weekend of the presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. The responses — from Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, and U.S. Cellular — indicate that the companies will boost capacity to handle the large influx of visitors to the capital, enabling free expression and documentation of any potential rights abuses. Our joint letter (PDF) specifically cites the need for expanded coverage not only at the inauguration but also demonstrations such as the planned Women’s March on Washington.

Pot Activists Plan To Light Up Inauguration With 4,200 Joints

By Nina Golgowski for The Huffington Post - No matter where you stand on Donald Trump’s impending presidency, pot activists promise his inauguration will be a “smokin’ fun time.” A cannabis coalition from Washington, D.C., said it will hand out 4,200 marijuana joints for free to the public, as the group marches toward the National Mall on Jan. 20. It’s legal to give away marijuana as a gift in D.C., but it’s against the law to sell it or smoke it in public. But that last part’s not stopping DC Marijuana Justice’s plans to publicly light up four minutes and 20 seconds into Trump’s speech.

A Note To My Fellow White Women About The Barred Inauguration March

By Cayce D. Utley for The Establishment - I love that you’re coming. I love that you’re mad enough about this horror show to show up, maybe for the first time. But let’s dive into our frustration about this . . .First, let’s sit with what it means to ask permission from the state and actually feel disappointment at being told “no.” We’re hip-deep in privilege if we thought a large gathering of women (now helmed by women of color) would be able to dissent with state approval. Are we used to getting our way a little? You betcha. Now is a good time to look around and re-center women of color in our thinking. How does the state respond to them? What is our response to all THAT?

Call For Bold Mobilization Against Inauguration Of Donald Trump

By Staff of #DisruptJ20 - On Friday, January 20, 2017, Donald Trump will be inaugurated as President of the United States. We call on all people of good conscience to join in disrupting the ceremonies. If Trump is to be inaugurated at all, let it happen behind closed doors, showing the true face of the security state Trump will preside over. It must be made clear to the whole world that the vast majority of people in the United States do not support his presidency or consent to his rule. Trump stands for tyranny, greed, and misogyny.

Call For Trump Protests Around Inauguration

By Kshana Sawant for Counterpunch. Hundreds of thousands of people have already poured into the streets since November 8th. On the night of the election result, my organization, Socialist Alternative began to organize protests around the country for the next day. Hundreds of thousands of people have already poured into the streets since November 8th. On the night of the election result, my organization, Socialist Alternative began to organize protests around the country for the next day. More than 50,000 answered that call: in Seattle, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Oakland. Many more protests have followed, as well as dozens of student walkouts, including 5,000 Seattle students on Monday alone. Our movement will need to be independent of both major political parties. The Democratic Party cannot be relied on to stop Trump, anymore now than during the election. And to truly defeat the right, we will need to build our own mass party – a party of, by and for the 99% – completely free of corporate cash and corporate influence. We have a historic responsibility to fight back against this administration. On January 20th and 21st, activists will be organizing protests and student walkouts across the country. Hundreds of thousands will gather for the Women’s March on Washington DC and to “Occupy Inauguration,” to send a message to the new president that there is no space whatsoever for his bigoted agenda in America.
