Los Angeles Demands: ICE Out Of Our Communities!

Los Angeles has become a flashpoint in the Trump administration’s escalating war on immigrants. On Friday, June 6, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raided a Home Depot parking lot in the city’s Westlake District, detaining several undocumented day laborers. Later, agents raided the city’s garment district. But ICE is meeting fierce opposition from community members. The raids sparked demonstrations, with protesters chanting and throwing eggs and rocks at the agents and police officers, who responded with pepper spray and tear gas. Forty-four people were arrested, among them California SEIU president David Huerta. The labor leader has been treated for injuries, but still in federal custody.

National Guard Attacks Raza In Los Angeles

Los Angeles, CA – Chicanos and supporters have been gathering at the Metropolitan Detention Center since yesterday evening, June 7, when the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents and other law enforcement personnel, started flash bombing and tear gassing protesters. Today, June 8, the National Guard was deployed and amped up the militarization in downtown Los Angeles. The Metropolitan Detention Center is in downtown. LAPD, California Highway Patrol, ERO [an immigration removal unit] and HSI [Homeland Security Investigations] agents have been deployed and are beating protesters while using tear gas and flash bang grenades.

Federal agents conducted a series of immigration sweeps across Los Angeles on Friday, prompting anger and resistance from onlookers and immigrant rights groups that have braced for this type of action for months. Over the weekend, tensions continued to rise between state and local authorities and Trump administration officials, who said they were calling up the National Guard in response to what they said were "violent mobs" attacking "ICE Officers and Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations in Los Angeles." Gov. Gavin Newsom called the plan to take over deployment from the state "purposefully inflammatory," adding that it "will only escalate tensions."

LASD, Federal Police Attack Press Covering ICE Protests

Police and federal agents fired crowd-control weapons at several reporters covering protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids in Los Angeles County, California. Journalist and and videographer Sean Beckner-Carmitchel reported that the LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) dispersed a protest after an ICE operation in Paramount. Officers deployed tear gas, percussion grenades, and other so-called “less lethal” munitions. Federal authorities shot at protesters, too.  A tear gas canister, according to Beckner-Carmitchel, hit him in the head. His face was covered in the CS agent, and Beckner-Carmitchel later said that the canister appeared to have been fired by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents, which are part of ICE. 

Federal Agents Conduct Immigration Raids Across Los Angeles

Federal agents conducted a series of immigration sweeps across Los Angeles on Friday, prompting anger and resistance from onlookers and immigrant rights groups that have braced for this type of action for months. About 44 people were arrested in the raids, according to a statement from a spokesperson for the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement obtained by LAist's media partner KCAL News. "ICE officers and agents alongside partner law enforcement agencies, executed four federal search warrants at three locations in central Los Angeles," ICE spokesperson Yasmeen Pitts O'Keefe said in the statement.

Los Angeles Passes United State’s Highest Minimum Wage

The Los Angeles City Council this month passed a law requiring hotel staff and airport catering industry workers be paid at least $30 per hour and given comprehensive health benefits by July 1, 2028. The minimum wage will be raised to $22.50 this year and increase by $2.50 each July for the next three years. This is a huge victory for UNITE HERE Local 11, the union that campaigned for the legislation, and represents the highest minimum wage in the country. (California’s statewide minimum is currently set at $16.50, and the highest minimum wage in the country currently is in D.C., with a $17.50 floor.)

As wildfires raged through Los Angeles early this year, California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency. The Jan. 7 declaration also triggered a state law enacting price controls on consumer goods in Los Angeles County for 30 days, which have since been extended to July 1. The law, meant to protect displaced Angelenos against price gouging and disaster profiteering, also regulates rental housing costs. This means landlords can’t legally raise rents by more than 10% either for current tenants or for prospective tenants if the unit was advertised in the past year, and can charge no more than 160% of the fair market rent for units that had not been rented or offered for rent in the past year.

Ice Raids Escalate In Los Angeles As Community Fights Back

Tense confrontations are escalating in Los Angeles’ residential neighborhoods. In just the first two weeks of May, incidents in South Central include a raid near Exposition and Arlington. According to witnesses, ICE agents arrived in force, shutting down the entire block with at least eight vehicles, including trucks and unmarked cars. Officers in full tactical gear, wearing bulletproof vests, detained at least five individuals. Neighbors reported hearing a detained individual shouting for a lawyer, while others described a heavy police presence nearby, including armored trucks.

Carla Flagg remembers the joy of growing up in west Altadena. “We had these great pool parties where all the cousins and everybody would come to the Fair Oaks house,” she says, smiling, as tears welled up in her eyes. Her parents owned the house and passed it down to her sister and her sister’s kids. “ We had that home for 50-some odd years, and there are still people who know the original phone number.” Flagg’s family home was one of some 9,400 structures that were destroyed in the Eaton Fire in January. It was also one of many homes passed down within the Black community by family members. Discriminatory redlining of the 1960s steered her parents away from Pasadena, and realtors encouraged them to purchase on the west side of Altadena.

Emergency Southwest Summit Against Deportations A Huge Success

Los Angeles, CA — More than 150 activists, both veterans and even more new organizers from all over the U.S. gathered the weekend of April 12-13, in a successful summit to fight deportations. The Emergency Southwest Summit Against Deportations was called to try to bring together a broad range of forces to fight the anti-immigrant policies of the Trump administration. Most of those who came were from the southwest United States, historically the home of most Chicanos and Mexicanos and a growing number of Central Americans. The summit allowed for participants who are enraged at the recent, terroristic treatment of the undocumented to convene and learn necessary tools to organize against these attacks.

Los Angeles Teachers’ Union Defends Students Anti-Migrant Crackdown

On April 7, federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) attempted to enter two elementary schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). According to LAUSD Superintendent Alberto Carvalho, the agents were trying to contact five students who they alleged entered the U.S. without documentation, and they lied to school officials by claiming that the students’ families gave them permission to contact the students. (“Any assertions that officers lied are false,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Truthout in a statement.) It was the first attempt by federal agents to enter a Los Angeles public school during Donald Trump’s intensifying assault on immigrants.

This Emergency Southwest Summit is an opportunity for immigrant rights activists to come together in the Southwest, historically significant for Chicanos and Mexicanos, to share lessons on how to organize and successfully fight back against Trump’s and ICE attacks. Since Trump’s Inauguration, there has been a surge of militant protests and struggle throughout the country, and masses of Chicanos, Mexicanos and Central Americans have taken to the streets to fight the Trump administration’s deportation campaign.

Last October, the ACLU launched a lawsuit against the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), challenging the school’s administrators’ suppression of student and faculty speech. That suppression ultimately resulted in the police’s violent destruction of the school’s Gaza Solidarity Encampment amid clashes with Zionist provocateurs. “I can still hear the relentless sound of the stun grenades,” described one student protester at the time. “Trepidation still courses through my body when I think about police in riot gear shooting rubber bullets at and beating students and friends.

Over 1000 Chicanos Hit The Streets Of Los Angeles To Protest Deportations

Los Angeles, CA – On February 17, over 1000 Chicanos gathered at Placita Olvera in downtown Los Angeles to protest against ICE deportations and to fight back against Trump's racist, right-wing agenda. The rally and march were called for by Chicana activists who used social media to get the word out. Recent protests in Los Angeles have brought out large crowds of Chicanos ready to stand up and fight, with the last one, on February 2, drawing tens of thousands who took to the streets. That afternoon protesters even took over the 101 Freeway, shutting it down for hours and completely overwhelming LAPD, LASD and CHP, which were completely unprepared and caught off guard by Raza fighting back.

Waving Mexican, Colombian, Venezuelan and Central American flags, the sea of people made it clear: Immigrants are here to stay. The event was to demonstrate public outcry and unity against Trump, his racist supporters, and his many anti-immigrant executive orders. Jordan Peña and Gabriel Quiroz Jr. with Centro Community Service Organization (CSO) led a CSO contingent at the massive event. Quiroz Jr. is also a member of the Freedom Road Socialist Organization (FRSO).
