Video: Dream Defenders Take Testimony On School To Prison Pipeline

The Dream Defenders, a group of student activists in Florida, aren't deterred by Gov. Rick Scott's refusal to hold a special session on the Stand Your Ground Law that allows individuals like George Zimmerman to claim self-defense. Instead, they are taking their cause - and Trayvon Martin's memory - straight to the lawmakers themselves. Watch as they stand their own ground to repeal the controversial protection law that begets violence. The Florida Black Caucus announces their support for the Dream Defenders. And, the Dream Defenders began to take expert testimony on the school to prison pipeline, for-profit prisons and other racially unfair criminal justice issues. They plan to issue a report for the legislature on their concerns with racism and profiteering in the justice system.

Hydro-Fracking Protests In Balcombe And Collective Identity

I had an interesting visit to the direct action protests against fracking in the Sussex village of Balcombe this week. As I arrived at the site, police were trying to clear an old fire engine which protestors had used to block the entrance to the site. It took nearly 6 hours to move because people were locked on inside and some were also glued to the entrance gate. In response to these protests Sussex Police have so far employed large numbers of officers from all over the county, including at least 3 Inspectors from 2 Public order details ('KB' and 'KL'), Police Liaison Officers, Evidence Gatherers, and a Tactical Advisor (who advises at public order events). Therefore, press speculation that up to 90 Police are on duty each day seems fairly close to the mark to me, and this will be a significant financial drain on their resources.

As the Great Gas Gala continues it’s looking like Balcombe 1 – Cuadrilla 1 with all to play for. The main difference between the opponents being that the people of Balcombe are fighting for their health and environment while Cuadrilla is trying to make a quick buck out of destroying other people’s communities. On Day 1 more than 250 people stopped Cuadrilla bringing any equipment onto the site. During Day 2 more than 90 police waded in to break up the blockade by force and escort trucks onto the site. The camp outside the site is still going strong though, with people refusing to be intimidated by this police thuggery. People are staying overnight but more support is needed. Car-loads of people arriving from all over UK.

Speaking with the others afterwards we all felt it was a powerful experience for each of us, being able to speak for those whose voices have been essentially silenced and shut away. We spoke for prisoners in Guantanamo and for those locked up in long-term solitary here in the U.S., including two women who have been in and out of solitary since they were sixteen. Since I had the most time to speak, being chained, I also spoke about the debt of gratitude people worldwide have for Bradley Manning’s courageous actions in revealing the crimes of our government and military and also much of what we know about Guantanamo.

Over the past months, as the prisoners who have been cleared for release from Guantanamo and yet kept after years of imprisonment and inhumane treatment, U.S. citizens have been on hunger strikes in solidarity with these prisoners. Recently, prisoners on the mainland have been fasting as their only means of protesting torturous treatment. Some of those on solidarity hunger strikes took complaints directly to the Senators in the Hart Building in D.C. to demand Justice for Gitmo, Pelican Bay, Palestine.

And to become that they are currently writing a new “trade” agreement for the Obama Administration called The Trans Pacific Partnership. Pfizer giant doesn’t want to be tied down anymore by the Lilliputians and their democracies with their pesky laws. And with the TPP they won’t have to worry about fines from things like health care fraud, off label marketing, or side effect risks…oh no my friend…The TPP will let them profit with impunity. They aren’t giving up those 3 days of sales for anyone or anything!

Every weekday since March 11, 2011 people come together in the Wisconsin State Capital to fight for our democracy through joyful song. From babies to grannies, on crutches and in failing health, after 3 days of arrests last week and through 30 arrests today, we sang. We sang at the same moment in time when Bradley Manning was wrongly declared guilty by those who's crimes he exposed.

A study by the National Fire Protection Association shows that only 3% of vehicle fires are the result of the impact from a crash. Instantaneous explosions of vehicles are almost unheard of. At the same time, a newly unearthed surveillance video shows that the crash which killed Rolling Stone journalist Michael Hastings resulted in a massive explosion which lit up the sky in the immediate vicinity, uncharacteristic of the typical high-speed crash which results in badly twisted metal, but rarely fire. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a premier testing organization, has rated the Mercedes GLK class SUV that Hastings was driving one of the 66 safest cars on the road. An explosion of the type witnessed in the newly unearthed surveillance video is almost unheard of in the automobile safety field, and even more so in a GLK class Mercedes. In a typical instance of a car catching fire after a crash impact, fuel drips and catches fire on the ground and around the car, with no violent explosion.

Noam Chomsky said that whistleblower Edward Snowden, who remains in Russia after releasing a trove of documents about secret NSA surveillance, should be honored. "He was doing what every citizen ought to do," Chomsky says in the video below. "He was telling Americans what the government is doing." Chomsky goes on to explain that governments always claim security as their justification for civil liberties abuses, but that overwhelmingly the security in question is that of the state ... from its own population. To smatterings of applause, Chomsky goes on to explain how America's drone campaign abroad is a far bigger threat to our security than leaked information about surveillance.

On Monday morning, July 30, 2013, in front of the historic Candler Building, in Baltimore, MD, I interviewed Dr. Margaret Flowers. She is a long-time advocate of a Medicare-for-All Healthcare system. The Candler Building was the first operational headquarters of the Social Security Administration in this country. It dates back to 1936. In 1965, the U.S. Congress passed the Medicare law. Today, Dr. Flowers underscored "is Medicare's 48th anniversary." She predicted that Obamacare will be found to be "totally inadequate" and will simply "privatize" the system even further. Dr. Flowers labeled Obamacare a "win for the corporations," which she insisted are part of the for-profit, "Medical-Industrial Complex." About "45,000" people die each year, Dr. Flowers continued, because they lack healthcare. It is estimated that between 47 and 50 million citizens in this country don't have any healthcare coverage at all and that bankruptcies related to failure to pay medical bills are on the rise.

Yesterday, fast food workers across the country walked out to strike for higher wages. This is part of an ongoing and building campaign by low wage workers at chains like McDonalds, Burger King and Wendy's who are unable to live on minimum wage. The workers have noticed the high profits of these corporations, the high pay to CEO's and executives while they struggle with pay too low to live on. No matter who is president, Democrat or Republican, VFP stays on path opposed to US foreign policy of war, militarism and Empire. Whether it is shutting down Guantanamo Bay, opposing the drone program or opposing wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya or Syria -- VFP will be on the front lines. Throughout the Occupy Movement, across the country, VFP members participated, camped out in public spaces and marched with occupiers. Often their Peace Teams would stand between police and protesters to either calm the situation, minimize the risk of arrest or be the first arrested. Here's a video from the Dream Defenders who have taken over Florida Capitol to demand the #TrayvonMartinAct. Since Tuesday morning, July 16, the Dream Defenders have maintained a presence at the Capitol for an extended stay to apply pressure and demand that Governor Rick Scott call for a special session of legislature to address issues related to the environment in Florida that led to this tragedy and injustice. Dream Defenders are pushing for what they are calling the 'Trayvon Martin Act' which addresses the repeal of Stand Your Ground, racial profiling, and the war on the youth.

our RAMPS and Mountain Justice folks took a plea deal today from the May 24 blockade of Alpha Natural Resources/Massey’s headquarters near Bristol, Tenn. A video from the action is here. Emily Gillespie, Junior Walk, Jocelyn Sawyer and Andy pleaded to blocking a roadway in exchange for the prosecutor dropping obstruction of justice. Each was sentenced to five days in jail plus a $100 fine and $116 in court costs. Additionally, the entire group was ordered to pay $3,328.77 in restitution to the city of Bristol.

The causes of revolution are numerous in form, but there is one common root, and that's discontent. Discontent is the emotion that builds and builds under the surface, it is a storm which brews in the mind of the people, just waiting to be unleashed. Discontent is a not sufficient driving force for a revolution, that is if your goal is actually to leave a better world for your children and grandchildren. In order for an upheaval to have positive results it must be driven by a clear and realistic vision, a vision that accounts for the world and humans the way they actually are right now, not the way we wish they would be or hope that they might be, and it must differentiate between that which can and cannot be changed in the short term.
