Story Government Doesn’t Want You To Hear

A sea of candles, a street of soft-lit faces, the swell of a thousand voices singing, the unstoppable surge of tears, an ache of yearning in the heart, the possibility of change, and the sense that as all falls into darkness, the people will rise. This is the story of nonviolent struggle . . . a story that has changed the world time and again . . . the story the government doesn't want you to hear. The government and mass media do their best to suppress this story. The cameras swing to the angry kid dressed in black and the provocations he launches at the police. The images flash scenes of chaos during the crackdown. The news does not report the countless hours of quiet boycotts, uneventful sit-ins, or midnight sign-painting sessions in preparation for tomorrow's picket lines. The sudden grace of students taking wing from tyranny, walking out on classes and injustice is rarely mediatized.

Just In Time: New Know Your Rights Videos

Just in time for Seven Days of Action: Global Climate Convergence, CLDC launched a new way for people everywhere to access the essential information needed to assert their rights! The well-known Know Your Rights for Activists training by Lauren Regan offers basic legal information for activists what to expect from law enforcement. As with all of our trainings, this video is not intended as legal advice and does not form an attorney-client relationship. We also published a Know Your Rights for Immigrant Communities training video, in both English and Spanish. The purpose of this training is to build solidarity with immigrant communities at risk for police and government harassment, and to prevent the deportation and destruction of families and communities.

This one time I played Pete Seeger’s banjo…

The first time I met Pete Seeger was at a People’s Music Network summer gathering about 10 years ago. I was a bright-eyed radical teenager who had just stolen all of my dad’s Phil Ochs CDs and was ready for revolution, but I was new to the folk scene and was probably the youngest person at the gathering by about 30 years. In terms of looks, I didn’t know Pete Seeger from Frank Sinatra.

Killing Of Environmental Activists Rises Globally

As head of his village, Prajob Naowa-opas battled to save his community in central Thailand from the illegal dumping of toxic waste by filing petitions and leading villagers to block trucks carrying the stuff -- until a gunman in broad daylight fired four shots into him. A year later, his three alleged killers, including a senior government official, are on trial for murder. The dumping has been halted and villagers are erecting a statue to their slain hero. But the prosecution of Prajob's murder is a rare exception. A survey released Tuesday -- the first comprehensive one of its kind - says that only 10 killers of 908 environmental activists slain around the world over the past decade have been convicted.

Will Wave Of Action Become Nightmare For The 1%?

What will prove to be either the last gasp of the Occupy Movement, or its Renaissance as a social powerhouse, will lie in the success and its embrace of a highly-publicized #WaveOfAction which launches a major 90-day program of protest and resistance on April 4. The Wave begins, symbolically, on the date of the assassination of Martin Luther King and ends, symbolically, on July the 4th. It will run from the date of the death of a dream that will not die to the date of the birth of a vision which has yet to be fulfilled. So, what is the purpose of this ambitious campaign, who is behind it, and what can we expect of it – and of ourselves? The purpose is stated on its website and is quite clear. We are a Movement of Movements

Calling All Change Agents: New ‘Localize This!’ Action Camp Announced

All year long, the Backbone team appears in our region and across the country, but only one time per year does the country come to us. For the past four years this gathering has been at the cusp of movement innovation, a source of numerous collaborations, and a spark for countless creative actions from viral Flash Mobs to Giant floating buttocks. Our giant 1% arrows banner and light projections preceded Occupy. 2012's camp lifted up Eviction Protection in the Seattle area and now our allies are celebrating a victorious Eviction Blockade. Our first camp even helped save an island! ARE YOU CURIOUS WHAT HAPPENS AT ACTION CAMP?- SEE THE OFFERINGS AT LAST YEAR'S NW ACTION CAMP Below

The Real Power Of Twitter Activism

Some may believe you need to wear a suit and stalk the corridors of government to actually engage in politics. But, for the influential political theorist Hannah Arendt, “real politics” takes place almost anywhere people come together to speak and act in concert. On Arendt’s terms, politics is not a function of voting at a ballot box or passing a piece of legislation. It is a form of human togetherness in which people bravely come out from the shadows and into the public sphere, to reveal their thoughts and actions to one another. Of course, much of what happens on Twitter has little to do with grassroots activism, let alone the kind of speech and action that can bring about broad institutional change or generate meaningful political influence. But, the exceptions are becoming more and more common, as tweets turn into national debates about racism and privilege.

Six LGBT Activists Detained In Moscow

Six LGBT activists have been detained at the State Children's Library in Moscow. The detention took place after the activist Aleksey Davidov stood in front of the library building with a banner where there was written that "Being Gay is Normal". The manifestation was dedicated to the Russian law banning propaganda of "non-traditional sexual relationships" among the under-aged. The law came into force on the 29th of June this year. The police press office announced that the activists were detained for "violating social order" and that they have been "delivered to a police station for a decision to be made about administrative responsibility".

Case Study In Activism: Battling Big Pharma

When we first spoke, you mentioned that making a difference was easier than you thought it would be. Help me understand. Early on it seemed that the financial power of pharmaceutical companies have over establishment psychiatry and mainstream media would be insurmountable. I thought it was going to be much more difficult for a relatively small group of activists -- comprised of mental health professionals, patients and ex-patients and their families, and journalists -- to make a dent. But recently -- thanks in large part to activist efforts -- the director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the U.S. government's highest ranking mental health official, has made some extraordinary admissions that opens the door to real reform.

Right-Wing Strategy To Crush Grassroots In Venezuela

Clodovaldo Hérnandez, Venezuelan writer and politician, talks about the criminalization of grassroots organizing, the right-wing strategy behind it, and goes on to explain why “the fate of the revolution rests in the communal councils” in an interview with newspaper Ciudad CCS, from March 10th, 2014.

Thunderclap! Help Amplify 99 Banner Drops in NY for Fair Elections

Elections are supposed to give ordinary people a voice, but once money gets involved, all bets are off. New York’s governor Andrew Cuomo campaigned on a promise of “fair elections” and campaign finance reform. But so far all we’ve seen is talk. That’s why activists are traveling all over the state of NY right now dropping 99 banners -- at least one in every county -- to keep the heat on Governor Cuomo and demand that he keep his promise to fund fair elections.

Worker Lawsuits May Force McDonald’s to Raise Wages

McDonald’s workers across the nation have filed seven class-action lawsuits alleging that the fast-food giant practiced systematic wage theft of its workers. McDonald’s employees filed two lawsuits in Michigan, one in New York and four in California. The lawsuits name the McDonald’s corporation and McDonald’s franchises as the defendants. The lawsuit filed in New York alleges that McDonald’s employees are required to pay out-of-pocket for their uniforms and all uniform cleaning expenses. Those additional expenses really hurt already struggling McDonald’s employees, and they also violate a New York state regulation that requires companies to reimburse workers weekly for the cost of buying and maintaining uniforms. Meanwhile, the lawsuits filed in California allege that McDonald’s managers are constantly playing fast and loose with employees’ hours in attempts to keep down costs, which violates federal wage and hour laws.

Occupy Radio: A Roadmap Compass to the New World

Those of us engaged in protesting the current failing system sometimes forget to remember the good things happening in our society, such as solar technology, local economies, and small-scale, organic agriculture. As a result, we can become plagued with a sense of hopelessness and despair as we engage in boycotts, strikes, blockades, and protests.

Popular Resistance Newsletter – Announcing Creative Resistance!

Beginning with the iconic image of the ballerina on top of the Wall Street Bull, art has been central to occupy and was an important reason for its powerful impact. Art adds vitality and energy to advocacy; and it reaches people at deeper emotional levels and in their hearts conveying what cannot be said with mere facts. We had been covering art as part of our reporting on the movement at Popular Resistance, but it wasn’t enough. There has been so much artistic activism that we decided it needed to be highlighted with its own website, Creative Resistance.org. It is a place where community members, activists and activist artists can connect and inspire each other. We encourage everyone to find ways that art can be incorporated into your actions and into the work in your community.

An Activist Armed With A Camera

The book will include images from the 2011 Wisconsin Uprising, Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Gezi, the 2012 RNC and DNC, the 2012 NATO protest in Chicago, Occupy 1-year anniversaries in NYC, Chicago, and DC, Occupy Sandy (Hurricane Sandy aftermath/recovery), the Enbridge pipeline blockade in Northern Minnesota, the 3-day March for Education Justice in Chicago, the Forward on Climate Rally in DC, and others. “In a culture dominated by corporate media propaganda, Jenna Pope uses her courage and her camera to challenge the mainstream narrative. The images and stories she shares not only prevent the 1% from hiding their global crimes, they also prevent the 99% from hiding behind the ‘I didn’t know’ excuse. Jenna’s work is photography as direct action.” – Mickey Z.
