Is Cristina Fernandez A Victim Of A Political Persecution?

For the journalist Stella Calloni, against the former president of Argentina, the same script used in Brazil against Lula da Silva is being repeated. The Senate of Argentina discussed Wednesday authorization to pave the homes of the former president and current senator Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner . The ruling party will try to get a vote on the judicial measure that was requested by federal judge Claudio Bonadio. The magistrate delivered the request within the framework of the case in which the payment of bribes in public works is investigated during part of the Kirchner government. CFK denounced on Tuesday that is a victim of political persecution against him in which act coordinated "the Judiciary, the Executive and the hegemonic media."

‘Brazil’s Judiciary Lost Its Masks’ Amid Lula Legal Fight: Ex-Justice Minister

As Brazil is undergoing living a political and electoral turmoil, the October presidential elections are approaching and frontrunner former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva remains in prison since April which casts doubt over whether or not his name will be on the ballot on Oct. 7 when Brazilians go to the polls. "Lula is our candidate and we will go to the last consequences," said Eugenio Aragao, law professor and former justice minister under former President Dilma Rousseff's government, in an exclusive interview with teleSUR to explain the complex legal and political situation that the country is living. On Aug.15, on the final day to present candidacies for the October elections, over 10,000 social and political movements' activists took part in the Free Lula March, led by the Workers Party (PT), and marched to the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) to support the registration of Lula.

In Unprecedented Move, Former Mayor And Ex-legislator Will Be Running Mates With Lula

It’s an unheard-of situation: three candidates running together for Brazil’s presidential elections. The unusual case is actually due to the peculiar scenario ahead of the elections, as the name at the top of voting intention polls – former Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, from the Workers’ Party (PT) – has been in prison for the past four months and is unable to exercise his political rights at the moment. The plan involves nominating, at first, Workers’ Party member and former São Paulo mayor Fernando Haddad as Lula’s running mate. Once their registration with the electoral court is reviewed and ratified, which should happen by September 17th, Manuela D’Ávila, from the Communist Party of Brazil (PCdoB), takes on the running-mate slot next to whoever the PT candidate may be, Lula or Haddad.

Lula: “We’re Going To Change Brazil Starting In January”

Brazil’s ex-president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is being held at the Federal Police headquarters since April 7th, received the visit of Rui Falcão, former chair of the Workers’ Party, and João Pedro Stedile, from the National Coordination of Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement (MST). During the visit, the ex-president once again reiterated he is running for president in the country’s upcoming election in October, and talked about current events, as reported by the visitors afterward saying, "Stay strong. I thank the Brazilian people who is supporting me, giving me energy, supporting me [to run] for president. I thank the activists who remain unshakable, organizing the people. Only the people who are organizing can stop this madness promoted by coupists and the court system."

Letter To The People Of Brazil

For two months now, I have been unjustly incarcerated without having committed any crime. For two months I have been unable to travel the country I love, bringing the message of hope of a better and more just Brazil, with opportunities for all, as I always did during 45 years of public life. I was deprived of my daily life with my sons and my daughter, my grandsons and granddaughters, my great-granddaughter, my friends and comrades. But I have no doubt that they have put me here to prevent me from being with my larger family: the Brazilian people. This is what distresses me the most, because I know that outside, every day, more and more families are back to living in the streets, abandoned by the State that should protect them.

Brazil Has Fallen Prey To Coup Leaders And Generals

In the Brazilian capital, one finds an atmosphere of confusion and concern. The large square housing the monumental buildings that are home to the President of the Republic, the National Congress and the Supreme Federal Court does not seem to have enough room to contain all the contradictions and tensions that have accumulated in the country. The “soft coup” which led to the dismissal of Dilma and the swearing in of Temer was finalized by Lula’s arrest. The anti-corruption Operation “Lava Jato,” launched by law enforcement in 2014, has involved a large part of the Brazilian political class and has had a profound effect on the political balance, causing fractures and restructuring, with a repositioning of all political and social forces.

Imperialism Had A Tough Week

Just when you think things are far too bleak, the human spirit rises to surprise you. In Brazil, the truckers went on an extended strike. They are angry about the fuel prices. It has made it impossible for them to make a living. Then, on the back of this strike, the oil workers went on a 72-hour ‘warning strike’ to send a message about these fuel prices. There is every indication that this government – the ‘coup government’ of Temer – is eager to privatise Brazil’s most important state-run asset – Petrobras. For a short report on the strikes and on the policy of privatisation in this sector, please see my article

On Monday, Glover had breakfast with the family of Marielle Franco, the city-council member and LGBT activist murdered in Rio de Janeiro. During a trip to Brazil to show solidarity with popular movements and leaders, actor Danny Glover arrived in Curitiba where former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is currently imprisoned to join occupier protesters at the Free Lula Vigil. The trip comes after the actor, famous for his roles in films like 'Lethal Weapon' and for producing documentaries such as 'The Black Power Mixtape,' traveled to Rio de Janeiro to meet with social movements. On Monday, Glover had breakfast with the family of Marielle Franco, the City Council member and LGBT activist murdered in Rio de Janeiro.

‘Astonishing’ CIA Memo Shows Brazil’s Ex-Dictator Authorized Torture And Executions

Brazil’s former dictator Ernesto Geisel personally approved the summary execution of his regime’s perceived enemies, according to a newly unearthed CIA memo that has reopened a bitter debate over one of the darkest chapters of contemporary Brazilian history.  Matias Spektor, the São Paulo-based academic who discovered and distributed the document on Thursday, called it “the most disturbing I have read in 20 years of research”. The memorandum, sent to then secretary of state, Henry Kissinger, by the CIA director, William Colby, on 11 April 1974, details a meeting it said had taken place a few days earlier between Geisel and three Brazilian generals. One tells Geisel, who ruled Brazil from 1974 until 1979, the regime “cannot ignore the subversive and terrorist threat” it faces.

Brazil: ‘Free Land Camp’ Demand Indigenous Land Demarcation

The Free Land Camp is located in front of the Indigenous Peoples Memorial in Brazil's capital city of Brasilia. Indigenous representatives from more than 100 ethnicities are spending their second day encamped in Brasilia to demand the demarcation of their traditional lands by the Brazilian government, as well as increased investment in health services and education and vital areas for their survival. The camp, called the Free Land Camp, or ATL, was set up on Monday and is located in front of the Indigenous Peoples Memorial in Brazil's capital city. Mia Alberti, reporting for teleSUR at ATL Tuesday, said the Munduruku kicked off the day by protesting the construction of a dam in their territory. Alberti noted that the project would strip away seven percent of their land based in the Amazon.

Brazil Gov’t: ‘Probable’ Police Involvement In Franco’s Murder

Brazil's government declared Monday that human rights activist Marielle Franco was “very likely” killed by “militias,” according to Minister of Public Security Raul Jungmann. “There are basically one or two promising leads: I would say that in one of them, investigators have moved forward significantly. The most probable hypothesis is the involvement of Rio de Janeiro's militias,” said Jungmann in an interview with local radio CBN. Militias refer to criminal groups whose members are former police officers or active and corrupted officers, controlling large parts of the city. They function as paramilitary groups and compete with other drug-trafficking groups over the control of favelas, affecting primarily the marginalized populations living there.

Brazil: ‘Free Lula!’ Protests Continue In Sao Paulo, Belo Horizonte

Demonstrators marched through the country's largest city chanting "Free Lula Now!" Demonstrators, including trade union and political party representatives, marched through Brazil's largest city Sao Paulo late Wednesday chanting “Free Lula!”. The protesters are a continuation of the series of protest, which began last week, calling for former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio 'Lula' da Silva be freed from prison. Adding to the hundreds of persons, who protested in Sao Paulo, thousands more, including members of social movements and unions, also took to the streets of Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais state, to demand Lula's release. Minas Gerais state congressman Rogerio Correia, said “only the people are capable of overcoming the crises that the 2016 coup brought to Brazil.

Worker Co-ops And Happiness

Greeting from São Paulo, the largest city in South America! I have left Argentina behind and moved onto Brazil, but I’ve been meaning to tell the story of a cooperative that left a huge impression on me back in Buenos Aires. Below is my story of Creando Conciencia and the new perspective it has given my research. The interview was conducted in Spanish, and all translations are my own. I took the wrong bus, one taxi, and then the right bus as the stormy sky grew ever more threatening, making my way slowly to a warehouse in the Benavidez neighborhood of El Tigre, a town on the delta north of Buenos Aires. I arrived just before a heavy downpour to meet the workers of Creando Conciencia, a recycling cooperative of 46 socios, or worker-owners, and realized quickly that my time there was definitely worth the journey.

Brazil: World Social Forum Concludes In Salvador

The thirteenth edition of the World Social Forum came to an end on Saturday (March 17), attracting more than 60,000 people to the various activities and debates held during the five-day event. The main venue was on the campus of the Federal University of Bahia (UFBA), in Ondina, but other spaces of the Bahia capital held activities as well, including the Exhibition Park, the Isba Theater and the Pituaçu stadium.. The tone to the Forum was set by discussions of democratization of communication, financial system, work, education and youth, future of work, science and technology, employment and income, rights for migrants and refugees, national sovereignty and science and technology. “This is my first forum and the debates have been very rich and complementary and show the importance of our struggles and confrontations against the advance of neoliberalism,” says Chilean student Maribel Diaz.

Popular Fronts Foresee Events In Favor Of Lula Until May 1

Social movements call for various acts in support of the Brazilian ex-president that will be taking place throughout the country until next May 1. The Popular Brazil and People Without Fear fronts (Povo Sem Medo) published a letter addressed to the followers of Lula who wish to participate in the demonstrations against the imprisonment of the Brazilian leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva carried out this Saturday, April 7. Both fronts bring together social movements of various causes in resistance to political coups that have been carried out since 2015, such as the one perpetrated in the form of a political trial against President Dilma Rousseff. "The detention of Lula is an essential part of the coup that is ongoing against the Brazilian people. The conservative offensive that led the impeachment against President Dilma, led to the murder of Marielle Franco, also manifested in the prison of President Lula.
