Coup Attempt

South Korea’s Martial Law Fiasco

In the wake of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s 6-hour coup, Western pundits have opined that this was an affirmation of South Korean democracy’s robustness and resilience, its institutional maturity and strength. This is like saying after a survivor fights off an assault, that this demonstrates a mature state of legal order. Hardly. It signals the opposite. Certainly, it highlights courage, but it isn’t a demonstration of a robust state of rights. It demonstrates a gaping, terrifying lack of order.

Support Koreans against Yoon!

The labor unions and mass organizations of the people of South Korea deserve the support of everyone who wants to struggle against war and dictatorship. They are fighting at this time — Dec. 4, 2024 — to rid the Seoul regime of its autocratic, anti-worker, pro-war President Yoon Suk-Yeol. On Dec. 3 Yoon declared martial law and sent elite troops to seize the National Assembly. His coup attempt failed, and the Congress voted to lift the coup. Yoon’s own cabinet members had dissented in fear of defeat, and Yoon was forced to retreat within hours of his martial law declaration.

Xiomara Castro Calls On The Honduran People To Stop Right-Wing Coup

The bases of the Libertad y Refundación Party (Partido Libre) will mobilize this Saturday, September 14 in support of the government of leftist Honduran President Xiomara Castro, who recently denounced a plan to carry out a coup d’état against her. In a national broadcast, President Castro said “After the threats of the US Ambassador accusing the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces and the former Secretary of Defense of being drug traffickers, I ratify that the peace and internal security of the Republic are at risk.” She continued, “The plan to destroy my socialist and democratic government and the next electoral process is underway.

US Citizens Among 37 Sentenced To Death Over Congo DR Coup Attempt

Three US citizens were among 37 defendants sentenced to death by a military court on Friday for their involvement in a failed coup attempt in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in May. On May 19, armed men briefly seized control of a presidential office in Kinshasa before security forces killed their leader, US-based Congolese politician Christian Malanga. Among the Americans on trial were Malanga’s son, Marcel Malanga, and his friend, Tyler Thompson. Thompson had accompanied Marcel to the DRC. The third American, Benjamin Zalman-Polun, was a business associate of Christian Malanga.

ALBA Movements: Neither Cohabitation Nor Transition!

Respect for the sovereignty and self-determination of peoples is a principle that any revolutionary project should prioritize.  It must make that principle a political banner in international relations, even in the face of conservative foreign pressure that always seeks to undermine it. The social and popular movements that know, love, and defend the Bolivarian people reject, as unusual and untimely, the slightest idea or suggestion, such as that proposed by some ‘progressive’ sectors in the region, of developing diplomatic, political, military, or any other type of interventions in Venezuela, which are aimed at effectively disregarding the results of a concluded electoral process.

Venezuelans Defend Their Revolution Against Another US Coup Attempt

On July 28, Venezuelans re-elected President Nicolas Maduro for another term despite US interference in their electoral process and subsequent attempts to delegitimize the process. The United States government has refused to recognize President Maduro, instead claiming without evidence that an opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, was the winner, a tactic reminiscent of the Juan Guaido charade. Clearing the FOG speaks with Venezuelan political analyst Maria Paez Victor about the Bolivarian Revolution, the most recent US-backed coup attempt, media attacks, and how Venezuelans have prepared to protect their deep democracy and social gains.

Venezuela Is A Marvellous Country In Motion

I have been in Caracas, Venezuela, for the past two weeks, before and after the presidential election on 28 July. In the run-up to the election, two things became clear to me. First, the Chavistas (supporters of Hugo Chávez and the Bolivarian project that is now led by President Nicolás Maduro) have the enormous advantage of an organised mass base. Second, knowing that the odds were not in their favour, the opposition, led by far-right María Corina Machado and the US government, were already signalling defeat before the election even took place by alleging that it would be fraudulent.

President Maduro Received Massive March For The Defense Of Peace

The President of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro was welcomed at Miraflores Palace by the Great National March for the Defense of Peace, which brought together tens of thousands of his followers in the streets of Caracas and different cities across the Venezuelan territory. On Saturday, August 3, President Maduro welcomed the attendees from Miraflores Palace and said: “Blessed are the majority of this country, because we won the elections thanks to the fact that a majority believed in the path of peace, because we are the only guarantee of peace.” He also condemned the violence perpetrated by criminal groups and stated that the country will remain firm in defending the constitution and the rights of its citizens.

Don’t Believe The Hype: Venezuela Is A Democracy

What we saw unfold was the playbook that the US has, when it comes to events in this region and really around the world, that when there's an attempt to have internal democratic processes, where the possibility of forces that may not be in alignment with the US come into power, and there is an attempt on the part of the US and the Western European allies to undermine those processes. And that's exactly what has occurred here in this country. I think the world was forewarned that the possibility of violence erupting if the opposition didn't win, was something that had to be dealt with, and acknowledged. But even before we talk about that, I wanted to just briefly share with the people who are reading this interview, that the process will determine how people actually vote here in this country. On the day of the election, we had an opportunity to move around primarily around Caracas and right outside, to view the process of various voting spaces and voting precincts, and what we saw was the process in place.

AFGJ Strongly Condemns The Attempted Military Coup In Bolivia

Alliance for Global Justice congratulates the Arce Administration for its swift action to restore popular democracy in Bolivia just hours after its National Army surrounded the Palacio Quemado with tanks and armored vehicles during a Cabinet meeting, calling for the resignation of the President and the entire Cabinet. The effort was led by Commander Juan José Zúñiga Macías, now under arrest, who had also made a series of threats against former president Evo Morales. Popular movements quickly took to the streets en masse across the country to defend Bolivia’s democracy, shouting “Lucho is not alone!” and “stop the coup d’état!”
