Imperialism

Video: Imperial Decay

There is a lot of excellent stuff in this video, but one point I came to fully endorse after a lot of research, soul searching and after having to comprehensively reject one of the key elements of my family's education, is that all empires are bad, all empires end up hurting the nations which produce them, and all empires end more or less along a few basic models. When the authors of the video ask whether this empire will end with a bang or a whimper they ask the single most important question facing humanity today: can we, the world's 99% (including the American people), bring down this AngloZionist empire without having it destroy our planet a hateful and rage-filled Götterdämmerung? When I was still studying in college (getting an MA from one of the most Neocon-linked schools in the USA: SAIS, Johns Hopkins U. in Washington) I remember spending many hours with some very sharp students from all over the world discussing whether the US empire would collapse from internal tensions or as a result from of external factors. At that time, the Soviet Union was collapsing and even to ask that question seemed crazy to most people. I am proud to say that the students at SAIS knew better. What we could not foresee is such watershed events like 9/11, the crazy war on terror, then Obama and his mega-betrayal of all his promises.

The Great War And Modern Amnesia

Exactly 100 years ago, on the morning of June 28, 1914, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife Sophie were assassinated when two bullets were fired at them at close range. At the moment, the couple were riding through the streets of Sarajevo in an open car when the vehicle stalled while the driver attempted to turn around. The assassin, Gavrilo Princip, was one of a team of killers on the trail of the Archduke that day. All were Serb nationalists who laid claim to all regions of the Balkans inhabited by ethnic Serbs, including places that were part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Princip and the others were also members of a terrorist organization called the Black Hand founded by the head of Serbia’s military intelligence. At the time, little was made of the killings. Virtually no one in the public sphere thought the event would lead to anything more cataclysmic than another round of fighting between Austria and Serbia. As we now know, of course, the assassinations precipitated a chain of events that, within six weeks, plunged Europe – and eventually the rest of the world – into the bloodiest conflict in history up to that time.

Reset Of Imperialist Borders: A Reaction Against Globalization

People all over the world, including the Scots, Catalans, Tuaregs, Crimeans, Kurds, Pashtuns, Basques and Palestinians are fighting for the right to have their own states. They want to control their lands and destinies and reclaim their national identities. Nations are usually defined by the common grounds of culture, language, and ethnicity within certain natural boundaries such as rivers, seas and large mountains. Because certain groups of people want to expand their territories through wars and conquests, other ethnic groups have been oppressed or even exterminated. History is almost always written by the winners, and world maps are mostly drawn with the blood of the losers. Five hundred years ago, the conquest of the Americas by Europeans meant the start of the genocide of native tribal populations from current-day Canada all the way to Brazil. Large-scale European colonialism, and its hideous helper slavery, redrew the world map entirely on all continents. Most of the conflicts at play today have their origins decades or even centuries ago, and they can usually be traced back to the criminal follies of European colonial empires. Empires come and go, but they leave deep scars on world maps that foment conflicts for long periods.

Action! April Recess Is Time To Stop Sanctions On Venezuela

The attempt to impose sanctions is driven by Congress members from Florida and New Jersey with strong ties to extreme rightwing Cuban-American groups who support the U.S. embargo against Cuba. Sadly, the Obama administration has also indicated that it is considering targeted sanctions against the Venezuelan government. Currently, no other country in the hemisphere besides Cuba is subject to U.S. sanctions. As President Pepe Mujica of Uruguay recently stated, “when the entire world asks the U.S. to shelve its economic blockade policy against Cuba, voices emerge from within that government threatening sanctions against Venezuela. Are the lessons of history never learned?” Tell your elected officials that their vote for sanctions would be a vote for further bloodshed by anti-democratic forces.

14 African Nations Forced To Pay French Colonial Tax

At this very moment I’m writing this article, 14 african countries are obliged by France, trough a colonial pact, to put 85% of their foreign reserve into France central bank under French minister of Finance control. Until now, 2014, Togo and about 13 other african countries still have to pay colonial debt to France. African leaders who refuse are killed or victim of coup. Those who obey are supported and rewarded by France with lavish lifestyle while their people endure extreme poverty, and desperation. It’s such an evil system even denounced by the European Union, but France is not ready to move from that colonial system which puts about 500 billions dollars from Africa to its treasury year in year out. We often accuse African leaders of corruption and serving western nations interests instead, but there is a clear explanation for that behavior. They behave so because they are afraid the be killed or victim of a coup. They want a powerful nation to back them in case of aggression or trouble. But, contrary to a friendly nation protection, the western protection is often offered in exchange of these leaders renouncing to serve their own people or nations’ interests.

Wounded Knee Massacre 123 Years Ago: Remember The Lost

One hundred and twenty-three winters ago, on December 29, 1890, some 150 Lakota men, women and children were massacred by the US 7th Calvary Regiment near Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Some estimate the actual number closer to 300. Snowfall was heavy that December week. The Lakota ancestors killed that day were left in brutal frigid wintry plains of the reservation before a burial party came to bury them in one mass grave. The photograph of Big Foot’s frozen and contorted body is a symbol for all American Indians of what happened to our ancestors. Some of those who survived were eventually taken to the Episcopal mission in Pine Ridge. Eventually, some of them were able to give an oral history of what happened.

Honduran Election Results Contested By International Observers

These elections were regarded as pivotal for Honduras, as the administration of the ruling National Party has done little to combat the country’s poverty rate which stands at over 60 percent. Instead the National Party has been focused on opening up the country to multinational corporations. This is best demonstrated by the National Party’s passage of a new mining law that would remove the moratorium on the granting of new mining concessions put in place by former president Zelaya in 2008. The new mining law, which was passed earlier this year, was drafted with the help of the Canadian International Development Agency. The law effectively allows for a return to destructive open-pit mining practices that have been linked to numerous human rights abuses and widespread environmental destruction.

Beyond The So-Called First Thanksgiving: Children’s Books

It’s November, a time of year that many parents, teachers, and librarians look forward to giving children books about what is commonly—and erroneously—called “The First Thanksgiving.” Others seek books that counter the narrative of Pilgrims and Indians warmly sharing a meal together, and still others want to avoid that disingenuous feel-good story altogether and provide children with books that are about indigenous people, books that provide insights and knowledge that are missing from all too many accounts. Your local bookstore probably has a special shelf this month filled with books about “The First Thanksgiving.” In most of them, Native peoples are stereotyped, and “Indian” instead of “Wampanoag” is used to identify the indigenous people. When the man known as Squanto is part of the stories, his value to the Pilgrims is that he can speak English, and he teaches them how to plant and hunt. The fact that he was kidnapped and sold into slavery in Spain—if mentioned at all—is not addressed in the story because elaborating on it would up-end the feel-good story.

Revisionism vs. Reality

As working class women and men, we have an intimate connection with indigenous peoples who were “so free with their possessions” that “they would offer to share with anyone,” just as we do with our neighbors. We have a bond with those whose only wish was to be left alone, to live and carry on as they please, to progress their livelihoods, and to care for their families, loved ones and neighbors, just as we do. The conditioned need to possess “worldly goods” at the expense of enslaving and murdering other human beings does not exist for our benefit, and should not be celebrated. Reality does and should mean something. Reject revisionism. Embrace reality. We have nothing to lose but our chains.

Columbus And “The Right Of Conquest”

The political-economy of domination – of which Columbus was as much an effect as a cause – continues to plague the health of the people of the world, it is important to recognize that embedded within the power-structure that Columbus conveyed to the Americas is the germ of its destruction. Implicit in the dominating power of the Fates (law as mere Order) is the liberating power of Asklepios (law as Justice), and the potentially emancipatory constitutional metanorm that the actual health of the people should be the supreme law.
