Muslims Waste No Time Building Opposition To Trump’s Proposed Registry

By Sarah Aziza for Waging Nonviolence - With just over a month to go before the inauguration of Donald Trump, Muslim activists are working to block the president-elect’s long-standing pledge to crack down on their community. Trump has proposed banning Muslims from entering the United States, voiced his support for the surveillance of mosques and has indicated he will create a nationwide registry of Muslim individuals. On Monday, 200 Muslims and allies in Washington, D.C. marched from the Department of Justice to the White House, bearing signs reading “No Muslim Registry, Not Now, Not Ever” and “End the War on Islam,”...

Civil Rights Groups To Obama: Dismantle ‘Muslim Registry’ Now

By Anne Meador for DC Media Group - About 150 people marched to the White House today to ask President Obama to rescind a program dormant since 2011. The program, which registered foreigners from mostly Muslim countries, was created after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and used to deport thousands of people. The protesters are concerned about the potential for President-elect Trump to use the program, called the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), to register and deport Muslims. The demonstration, organized by MoveOn.org, Desis Rising Up & Moving (DRUM), the ACLU and many others, comes soon before President-elect Doanld Trump takes office.

Judge Calls For Additional Safeguards In NYPD Surveillance Rules

BY Staff of ACLU - NEW YORK - In a legal challenge to the New York City Police Department’s surveillance of American Muslims, a federal judge issued a ruling calling for alterations to a landmark lawsuit settlement as a condition of approving the settlement. The alterations proposed by the judge would further strengthen the settlement’s ability to protect New York Muslims and others from discriminatory and unjustified surveillance.

France Burkini: Highest Court Suspends Ban

By Staff of BBC News - The ban in Villeneuve-Loubet "seriously and clearly illegally breached fundamental freedoms", it found. The ruling could set a precedent for up to 30 other towns that imposed bans on their beaches, chiefly on the Riviera. At least three mayors have already said they will keep the bans in their towns. The court will make a final decision later on the bans' legality.

French Threaten Lawsuits For Images Of Police Harassing Muslim Women

By Staff of teleSUR - Responding to the international outrage over photos of French armed police forcing Muslim women to remove their clothes on a Mediterranean beach, one French official threatened Wednesday to sue whoever dares to share such photos on social media. “Photos showing police officers from the city of Nice, doing their job, are spreading on social media since this morning and have sparked defamatory language and threats against these officers,” said Nice’s right-wing Vice Mayor Christian Estrosi.

Queens Imam And His Assistant Shot To Death By Gunman In Attack

By Dale Eisinger et al for NY Daily News - A lone gunman executed a revered Queens imam and his friend as the pair walked home from Saturday prayers, blasting each in the back of the head without a word, officials said. Mosque leader Maulama Akonjee and friend Thara Uddin were dressed in Muslim garb when the killer “approached from behind and shot” from point-blank range, said NYPD Deputy Inspector Henry Sautner of the Queens South Detective Bureau.

Islamophobia Industry Spent $206M Building Hatred In US

By Kit O'Connell for Mint Press News - AUSTIN, Texas — Islamophobia is more profitable than ever in America, but a new report from a leading Muslim civil rights organization offers a new strategy to take the national conversation back from the proprietors of hate. Thirty-three key organizations promoting anti-Muslim sentiment had access to a combined budget of $205,838,077 between 2008 and 2013, according to “Confronting Fear: Islamophobia and its Impact in the U.S. 2013-2015,”

They’re Killing Us. Help Us Stop Them.

By Grace Dolan-Sandrino for Other Worlds - From Orlando to Washington, a culture of fear and bigotry is taking hold of this country. We can stop it together. The weekend of June 12 sent me on a rollercoaster of emotions I never thought possible. The previous Friday, I was an invited participant in the first-ever White House Summit for African American LGBTQ Youth. I felt amazingly supported, empowered, and valued — by my school, by my family and friends, by President Obama, and by my LGBTQ community.

Stop Exploiting LGBTQ Issues To Demonize Islam

By Glenn Greenwald for The Intercept - IN THE LATE 1990s, Eric Rudolph — raised Catholic and affiliated for a time with a Christian Identity sect — bombed abortion clinics and a gay bar, insisting they were venues of immorality and evil. Last July, an Orthodox Jewish Israeli attacked the marchers in the Jerusalem LGBT pride parade, stabbing six of them, and one of them, a teenager, died of her wounds; justifying his attacks by appealing to Talmudic punishments for homosexuality, he had just been released from a 10-year prison term for doing the same in 2005.

6 Incidents Of Islamophobia On Campus In 1 Week

By Imraan Siddiqi for Mondoweiss - When an incident of vandalism or hate graffiti takes place, most would write it off as an isolated incident – an act of foolishness. But when these incidents are taking place on college campuses across the U.S. – half a dozen in a week’s time, that’s cause for concern. So what’s going on here? Are these still isolated incidents? Or is campus Islamophobia on the verge of raging out of control? Take a look at these 6 incidents, and judge for yourself

The Creeping Villainy Of American Politics

By Chris Hedges for Truth Dig - The threefold rise in hate crimes against Muslims since the Paris and San Bernardino attacks and the acceptance of hate speech as a legitimate form of political discourse signal the morbidity of our civil society. The body politic is coughing up blood. The daily amplification of this hate speech by a commercial media whose sole concern is ratings and advertising dollars rather than serving as a bulwark to protect society presages a descent into the protofascist nightmare of racism, indiscriminate violence against the marginalized, and a blind celebration of American chauvinism, militarism and bigotry.

‘I Built A Clock And Got In Trouble For It’

By Andy Campbell in The Huffington Post - The 14-year-old Muslim boy who was arrested Monday and suspended from school after his homemade clock was mistaken for a bomb is changing schools. Ahmed Mohamed was all smiles as he spoke outside his home in Irving, Texas, on Wednesday, saying that he'll spend the rest of his three-day school suspension looking to transfer out of MacArthur High School. "I’m the person who built a clock and got in a lot of trouble for it," he said in an interview aired by Fox News. "I built the clock to impress my teacher, but when I showed it to her, she thought it was a threat to her. It was really sad that she took the wrong impression from it and I got arrested for it later that day." Ahmed was pulled from class Monday and taken to a detention center after showing the digital clock to teachers at his suburban Dallas high school.

82 Orgs Ask DOJ To Address Illegality Of ‘Muslim-Free Zone’

By CAIR - The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, announced today that a coalition of 82 civil liberties, human rights, immigrant rights, faith, and cultural organizations (see list of signatories below) sent a letter to Attorney General Loretta Lynch asking her to investigate the growing phenomena of so-called “Muslim-free zone” businesses nationwide. The coalition, which includes prominent national organizations such as the ACLU, NAACP and the YWCA USA, requested that the U.S. Department of Justice Civil Rights Division’s Housing and Civil Enforcement Section conduct a full federal investigation into all businesses that have declared themselves as “Muslim-Free Zones” and “bring civil enforcement proceedings against business owners who have violated the law.”

Beyond Drones Debate: Should US Be Judge, Jury & Executioner?

By Adam Hudson in Truthout - Throughout the war on terror, drone strikes and other covert operations have, so far, killed around 3,000 to over 5,000 people, including about 500 to over 1,200 civilians in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, according to the Bureau of Investigative Journalism. Since the first US drone strike in 2002, US drones have also killed 38 Westerners, including 10 US citizens. At least 18 are European citizens, according to the Bureau's numbers. Drone strikes also inflict serious psychological trauma on communities who live under them. A Stanford and New York University report points out that drone strikes inflict harm that "goes beyond death and physical injury ... Their presence terrorizes men, women, and children, giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian communities."

Video: “Death To The Arabs” March Through Occupied Jerusalem

This disturbing video shows Israeli youths, escorted by police and occupation forces, marching through the Old City of Jerusalem chanting “mavet la’aravim” – “death to the Arabs” – and other cries of hate. According to the racism-monitoring website Kifaya, the 19 April march was part of the monthly “Tour of the Gates” by Jewish extremists through the Muslim Quarter of the Old City. As part of the event, held at the beginning of every month according to the Jewish calendar, the one-kilometer-long route is blocked to Palestinians, and businesses and stores must close, Kifaya says. Palestinians are forbidden from leaving their homes during the march.
