My Experience Marching With Black Lives Matter In Chicago

By Chauncey DeVega for Salon - Several months ago, I personally experienced the worst of democracy at Donald Trump’s “no-show” rally in Chicago, when the raw passion, racism, bigotry, and violence he encourages among his supporters almost caused a riot at the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion. On Saturday, I experienced some of the best aspects of democracy as I marched in the streets of downtown Chicago with members of Black Lives Matter and their allies who were protesting police brutality against people of color.

In Uruguay: March Of Silence For South America’s Martyrs

By Andre Vltchek for RT - They were marching shoulder-to-shoulder, young and old, in absolute silence. Some were carrying small placards with names and photos of their loved ones, who disappeared four decades ago, during the pro-Western dictatorship here in Uruguay. The entire center of Montevideo came to a standstill. Blocks and blocks of this marvelous city were literally inundated by the river consisting of human bodies.

Save Our Schools: Time To March Again This Summer

By Anthony Cody for Living In Dialogue - In 2011, the Save Our Schools March was the first-ever national protest focused on K12 education. In 2016, we are going back to DC again. The 2011 rally and march was a seminal event for the movement to resist corporate education reform. This protest resulted in the launch of many of the groups that are active today. And many of those groups are coming together once again in the Save Our Schools Coalition.

#DemocracySpring, 140-Mile March Before DC Sit-Ins, Arrests

By Deirdre Fulton for Common Dreams - Taking their first steps "along the path to a better future," roughly 150 people on Saturday began a 140-mile march from Philadelphia to Washington, D.C., marking the official launch of the mass civil disobedience campaign known as Democracy Spring. The Democracy Spring effort—which organizers describe as "poised to possibly be one of the biggest and most impactful acts of civil disobedience in a generation"—is supported by climate, labor, healthcare, and social justice organizations, along with more than 6,000 people who have signed up to participate.

Anti-Pipeline March Draws All Ages

By Diane Broncaccio for The Recorder - ASHFIELD — At least 100 people walked through fog, rain, a bit of hail, and sunshine Thursday during the first leg of what is to be a 46-mile, four-day journey from the site of a proposed Tennessee Gas Pipeline compressor station in Windsor to another compressor station slated for Northfield, should the proposed Northeast Energy Direct gas pipeline become a reality. Carrying backpacks and “Stop the Pipeline” signs, marchers piled into the Ashfield Congregational Church for a hot meal prepared by the community.

DUMP DOMINION: A March For Our Rivers!

By Staff of NO ACP - Over 700 folks joined us on this beautiful sunny Saturday! This was the largest anti Dominion protest in VA history! We can’t thank the attendees, the arrestees and our wonderful team of point people and liaisons enough. We have more love for you all than we ever have. We came to our state capitol to challenge the toxic relationship between Dominion, Governor McAuliffe, DEQ, and our legislators. The rally was full of insightful and intersectional speakers that enlightened us to Dominion’s overreach, green-washing, eco-racism, eco-feminism, Appalachian resistance history, and much more.

10th Annual Moral March On Raleigh HKonJ People’s Assembly

By Staff of HKONJ - Our legislators are systematically seeking to abridge and suppress our vote and disrespect the rivers of blood which made our vote possible - we will mobilize like never before and cast ballots like never before. Argentines March With Workers Against Macri’s Pro-Business Policies

By Staff of Tele Sur - Argentines hit the streets on Tuesday in the first mass mobilization against Macri’s fiscal adjustment plan. Thousands of Argentines from various leftist groups gathered at the Plaza de Mayo on Tuesday to decry the fiscal and labor policies of the newly instated President Mauricio Macri, which they view as gains for the “CEOcracy” at the expense of workers. The action, ending at the presidential palace, was the first unified march against Macri’s adjustment program.

Muslim Anti-Isis March Not Covered By The Media

By Serina Sandhu for Independent - Organisers of an anti-Isis march in London have spoken of their frustration after mainstream media outlets failed to cover the demonstration. Thousands of people took part in the annual UK Arbaeen Procession, coordinated by the Husaini Islamic Trust UK, on Sunday. Although Shia Muslims take part in the march each year to mark the Arbaeen, or mourning, anniversary of Imam Husain - a seventh-century leader who fought for social justice - this year organisers decided to use the event as a platform to denounce terrorism following the recent Isis attacks in Paris, Beirut and elsewhere.

Paris And The Crisis In The Climate Justice Movement

By Belinda Rodriguez and Ben Case for ROAR - In the wake of ISIS’ attacks on Paris, French authorities jumped on the opportunity to revoke permits for the Global Climate March, a well-planned series of demonstrations scheduled to coincide with international climate talks. After speculation around the fate of the demonstrations, several prominent groups including 350.org and Avaaz gave in and announced that the march was canceled, while key grassroots groups announced they would take to the streets despite the ban.

Despite Bans Global Climate Marches To See Unprecedented Numbers

By Staff of Climate Action Network - 21 November, 2015 - Paris, France: On November 28 and 29, hundreds of thousands of people around the world will take to the streets in more than 2000 events in 150 countries to turn up the heat on leaders heading to the Paris Climate Summit. Frontline community representatives, unionists, faith leaders, and families will call on politicians to forge an ambitious new global climate agreement this December that speeds up the just transition from fossil fuels to 100% renewable energy and protects vulnerable people from worsening climate impacts. The people’s call for leadership will be harder and harder to ignore.

Hundreds March In Vancouver For Missing & Murdered Women

There was grief and outrage on the streets Saturday, as hundreds gathered to remember aboriginal women who have died or gone missing. In Victoria, hundreds of aboriginal women and supporters marched down Government Street to the legislature, coming together to remember their “stolen sisters.” “Our main focus for the [Stolen Sisters] memorial march is that people will be able to come together and honour the women we’ve lost, and give space to community healing,” said organizer Jessica-Dawn Humphries ahead of the event. “We don’t want to forget the lives we’ve lost, but we also want to find solutions for the future.”

Thousands Join Moral March In North Carolina

It’s that kind of come one, come all event. And even though this year’s ninth annual march wasn’t as big as last year’s—one that The Nation’s Ari Berman reported as “the largest civil rights rally in the South since the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965”—organizers again brought together a diverse coalition of activists on a chilly Valentine’s Day to protest what movement leader and state NAACP president Rev. Dr. William Barber II described as the state’s—and the nation’s—“heart problem.” And while Moral Mondays movement is left-leaning, Barber told supporters that he wanted them to be political “defibrillators” because “we find we’ve got, not a left problem, or a right problem, or a conservative problem or a liberal problem. We’ve got a heart problem.

Do Demonstrations Matter? Amir Amirani & Phyllis Bennis

On February 15, 2003, millions of people in over 800 cities on seven continents marched against the impending invasion of Iraq. It was the largest mobilization of people in human history and yet it remains a little-known story. As we approach Martin Luther King Day and think about his legacy of civic resistance, this episode looks at the recent history of the global antiwar movement, and its relevance to today. A new documentary by this week's guest, Amir Amirani, tells the story of the mass protests against the Iraq war. From Iraq to Egypt to Syria to today's protests, the film looks at the legacy of that protest movement and asks, what do mass mobilizations accomplish? Amir Amirani a long time filmmaker for the BBC, tells about his process making the film.
