Why US Food Is More Dangerous Than Food In Europe

A speaker at an event I recently attended asked why U.S. food companies put butylated hydroxyltoluene, a food preservative and endocrine disruptor, in cereal sold stateside, while in Europe the same companies formulate the same product without BHT. There are three answers to that question: The European Union prohibits numerous harmful ingredients U.S. regulatory agencies allow. Well-informed European citizens have organized and pushed for those regulations. U.S. citizens have not yet pushed for such regulations in sufficient numbers. The precautionary principle is an approach to risk management which places the burden of proof to demonstrate a product or ingredient's safety on the corporations that produces the product— prior to releasing it to the public. Over the last few decades, the U.S. has become lax with this approach while Europe proceeds with a greater amount of caution. But that contrast may not survive efforts by the U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman and multinational corporations, which are currently negotiating super trade treaties behind closed doors.

Is Wyden Moving Against Fast Track?

Today we started a "Drop In Hang Out" in Senator Wyden's office to let him know people are watching him very closely on the issue of Fast Track trade authority. People will be participating in a rolling sit-in for most of the week. Sen. Wyden is the ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee. He has been in discussions with Senator Orin Hatch about co-sponsoring Fast Track legislation. Wyden's constituents have been letting them know they oppose Fast Track and a poll showed that 73% oppose such legislation. In the article below it seems Sen. Wyden seems to be listening. He is publicly saying that Sen. Hatch is moving to quickly toward Fast Track legislation. What he should be saying is that Sen. Hatch is moving in the wrong direction. The truth is that Fast Track cannot work with the three treaties currently being negotiated because it is impossible to achieve the objectives that Sen. Wyden says is necessary in any Fast Track legislation: (1) transparency for congress and the public, (2) participation in the process by Congress. These trade agreements have been negotiated for years and are nearing completion so how can Congress participate? Transparency would be coming too late for the public to have any input. As a result -- Fast Track must not be permitted for any of these agreements. Congress and the people need time to rethink the goals of trade and how trade should be negotiated. Transparency and participation are two keys, but we also must put people and planet before profits.

Top Democrat Denied Access To Trade Deals

Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Texas), a senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee, wants to view an unredacted copy of the proposed text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership(TTIP). He wants to bring his chief of staff, who has a top security clearance, and he wants to be able to take notes privately. He also wants to review documents that show the position of each country participating in the agreements, as well how the U.S. position has changed over the course of the negotiations. In a letter this week, Doggett accused Michael Froman, the United States Trade Representative (USTR), of avoiding his requests since January. "USTR has provided no legal justification for denying such Member and staff review," wrote Doggett. The text of TPP is treated as a state secret -- to a degree. Access to TPP texts is limited to members of Congress and staffers on the Senate Finance Committee and House Ways and Means Committee who have an official security clearance. Hundreds of corporate lobbyists and executives are also given access . . .

Since the President’s State of the Union message where he announced his plan to push corporate trade agreements and seek Fast Track trade promotion authority, the movement against Fast Track, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and globalized trade has grown. Instead of the bump in support that Obama expected after the State of the Union, opposition has increased inside Congress and in the grass roots. This week Senator Grassley saidthat currently they don’t have 60 votes in support of Fast Track and therefore it could not pass a filibuster. If Wyden demands that Congress sees the text of the TPP and has true involvement in the negotiations before they are finalized, then he and Hatch will not reach agreement and the Republicans will have to go it alone. In the House there are even more challenges for Fast Track. Chuck Porcari of the Communication Workers (CWA) writes: “House Speaker John Boehner has said that the White House needs to deliver at least 50 House Democrats if Fast Track has any hopes of passing, especially now that the White House is trying to whip together 80 Democrats in the House and New Democrat Coalition is trying to cobble together at most 40 votes. . . . According to a story by Inside U.S. Trade, ‘one informed source questioned whether the New Democrats actually have an idea of which lawmakers will provide the 40 ‘yes’ votes they are seeking.’”

The corporate media is reporting that since the Republican leadership and President Obama support Fast Track trade authority, it is a done deal. And that message, also heard by countries negotiating the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), is driving the race to finalize that agreement. The truth is: Fast Track is not a done deal. There is bi-partisan opposition in Congress and a large movement of movements organized to stop it. Members of both parties know that Obama will be out of office when the negative impacts of these trade agreements are felt. BRUSSELS - Protestors gathered in front of an empty EU summit building on Friday (19 December) to demonstrate against the EU-US free trade pact talks. A planned two-day summit in Brussels ended early on Thursday evening with EU leaders pledging to have the deal, which is set to remove trade tariffs and harmonise standards with the US, signed by the end of 2015. But Sebastian Franco, one of the protest organisers at Alliance D-1920, a social movement opposed to the transatlantic trade and investment partnership (TTIP), told this website their anti-free trade message had not been lost. “It is the first time the summit finished so early, I wouldn’t say it was just because of us, but it was also because of us,” he said.

This week TPP trade negotiators are in Washington, DC. On Monday morning members of Popular Resistance held a 'Sit-in to End the Secrecy' on the front steps of the USTR office . As Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) negotiators and USTR staff arrived for their first day of meetings this week, demonstrators demanded that they stop hiding the text of the trade agreement and instead make it available to the public telling them "secret negotiations are anti-democratic." After several hours of blocking the front entrance and disrupting business by chanting, singing and banging on a cow bell, pots and blowing whistles, the protesters were joined by close to 200 more people.

Tens of thousands of people are flooding the streets of cities all over Europe on Saturday in mass rallies against a controversial trade agreement between the US and the EU. Talks on the pact, called the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP), started last February and, having been mostly held behind closed doors, have raised widespread concerns in the European Union and beyond. Social networks have been mobilized for a mass campaign that has been calling on Europeans and Americans to take action against “the biggest corporate power grab in a decade.” Protests were planned in 22 countries across Europe – marches, rallies and other public events – in over 1,000 locations in UK, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, Netherlands, Poland, the Czech Republic and Scandinavian countries.

Berkeley Says No To Corporate Trade Takeover

The resolution declares Berkeley to be a TPP and TAFTA Free Zone where Berkeley will not recognize trade provisions and tribunal rulings related to these agreements. Specifically, it states: “to every extent allowable by law, rules which do not promote the interests of workers, protect the environment, and improve the quality of life in all participating countries and which were negotiated without transparency as well as meaningful congressional and public input, and related tribunals’ rulings, will not be recognized.” The City Council resolution, which follows similar resolutions passed by Dane County WI and Madison WI on the TPP, encourages communities to take “peacefully powerful actions for self-determination such as becoming TPP/TAFTA-Free Zones.”

As elections get closer, Democratic Party leaders in Congress are getting the message out to inside-the-beltway activists groups that they are unifying to support giving President Obama some form of Fast Track. Recent letters from member of Congress to the President indicate support for trade with particular stipulations, but the overall message is to continue negotiating. Washington advocacy groups believe that they must also show support for Fast Track or they will find themselves without access or influence. Rather than kowtowing to the usual ‘on the table’ threat from the corrupt bi-partisan Congress, the movement needs to tell them that the only thing on the table is a complete transformation from the failed global trade that rigs profits for big business at the expense of the ecology of the planet and the necessities of the people. It is time to declare the TPP, TAFTA and the Services agreements as dead, develop a new approach to trade and begin to renegotiate past trade agreements like NAFTA that are doing ongoing damage to the economy, planet and people.

Bipartisan Letter From 140 Members Of Congress Last week 140 members of Congress signed a letter asking the White House and TPP negotiators to leave out countries that won’t fully open their markets to all U.S. agriculture products. The letter was led by Devin Nunes, R-Calif. and Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., the chair and ranking member of the House Ways and Means trade subcommittee. Farm Futures reports that the letter focused on Japan. Japan is demanding exemptions that allow the country to continue tariffs on what they call “sensitive” products. These include pork, beef, dairy, sugar, wheat, barley and rice. Reuters reports that the letter also asked that Canada be removed from TPP negotiations.

More than one thousand protestors occupied the London square in front of the European Union’s UK base today as part of nationwide demonstrations against the trade deal currently being negotiated between the EU and the US. Protestors took over Smith Square, the Westminster home of Europe House, between 1pm and 3pm, demanding an end to talks on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP). David Cameron is pushing hard for the deal, which critics have described as a ‘corporate power-grab’. Negotiators will meet in Brussels on Tuesday 15 July in an attempt to reach an agreement on the most contentious proposals in the deal.

If agreed, TTIP would extend the power of big business over our society to unprecedented levels. It would grant corporations the power to sue governments for making laws that 'damage' their profits, threatening to make the privatisation of our public services, like the NHS and education irreversible. This deal is also about undoing hard-won regulation that protects workers’ rights, the environment and our health. Harmful industries like fracking would be given an easier ride and banks and financial institutions would gain even more power. Meanwhile, food safety standards would be undermined and pay and conditions at work could decline. Trade deals like this have been beaten before.
