Solidarity With Samidoun And Khaled Barakat, Designated As ‘Terrorists’

Orinoco Tribune strongly condemns the designation of the Palestinian prisoner solidarity organization Samidoun as a “foreign terrorist entity” by the governments of the United States and Canada. Orinoco Tribune also condemns the branding of Palestinian activist Khaled Barakat, a Canadian citizen, as a “terrorist” by the US government and the imposition of targeted sanctions against him. Orinoco Tribune considers this designation to be a thinly veiled attempt to silence Palestinians and pro-Palestine voices and suppress the legitimate humanitarian efforts of Samidoun and other organizations working for the Palestinian people.

Canada’s decision to blacklist Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) as a “terrorist entity” aligns with a series of politically motivated actions against Tehran by many Western states in recent years. This designation – of the world’s most powerful and respected anti-terror force – is not only disconnected from reality but also violates international norms by interfering with a sovereign nation. The IRGC has not only provided security for Iranians by safeguarding the country’s borders from various threats but has also protected West Asia and the world from the scourge terrorism, including that of Daesh.

There is no mistake about it. With the February 27 release of the State Department Country Report on Terrorism 2021, President Biden accepted ownership of the illegal U.S. economic war on Cuba, following suit with Donald Trump, George Bush, and Ronald Reagan’s hawkishness with the false designation of Cuba as a so-called “State Sponsor of Terror.” Unbelievably Biden’s Secretary of State asserts that “Cuba had repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism since its State Sponsor of Terrorism designation had been rescinded in 2015.” Despite this untrue report, Pres. Biden need only review the past six months and accept Cuba’s unequivocal rejection of terrorism to take Cuba off the list.

Today car and bike caravans in many U.S. cities are rightly demanding that Cuba be taken off the U.S. State Department’s “State Sponsors of Terrorism” list. Did you know there was such a thing? Every presidential administration appoints a secretary of state. Now it is Antony Blinken; before him was Mike Pompeo, and under Obama it was John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. And the president, through the secretary of state, can put countries on this list or take them off. It is that arbitrary. As a parting slam against Cuba, on Jan. 12, 2021, just eight days before Joe Biden assumed the presidency, the Trump administration condemned Cuba once again. And Biden has let it stand, although he can waive provisions or decide to remove Cuba from the list altogether.

As the Cuban government celebrates the July 26 Day of the National Rebellion — a public holiday commemorating the 1953 attack on the Moncada Barracks that is considered the precursor to the 1959 revolution — U.S. groups are calling on the Biden administration to end cruel sanctions that are creating such hardship for the Cuban people. In particular, they are pushing President Joe Biden to take Cuba off the list of state sponsors of terrorism. Being on this list subjects Cuba to a series of devastating international financial restrictions. It is illegal for U.S. banks to process transactions to Cuba, but U.S. sanctions also have an unlawful extraterritorial reach.  Fearful of getting in the crosshairs of U.S. regulations, most Western banks have also stopped processing transactions involving Cuba or have implemented new layers of compliance.

US: American Journalist Has No Right To Challenge Decision To Assassinate Him

The US Government has asked the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit to affirm the dismissal of American journalist Bilal Abdul Kareem’s challenge to his Government’s apparent decision to assassinate him without telling him why, or affording him the constitutional right to due process. Mr Kareem is a recipient of the Edward R. Murrow and Peabody Awards, who grew up in Mount Vernon, New York, and used to be a stand-up comedian in New York City. He has been reporting on the conflict from Syria since it began. In 2016, he narrowly escaped being killed on five separate occasions, including two strikes on cars he was travelling in and a further two strikes on the headquarters of his news agency, On The Ground News.
